Ken took languish steps toward his hostel, fighting very hard to withhold the tears welling up in his eyes. He imagined Miranda, laughing behind him while he vanish from her sight.
He lowered his head and kept wondering whether Miranda had ever loved him for a moment. Again, she had just lashed out at him, stating that she was grateful she was with Charlie now.
Ken sniffled as he walked down the straight path ahead of him, assessing Miranda's torturous statements. Maybe she's better off without him.
After moving to Harvard, he had hoped that he'll get to move on quickly now that he's far away from her but it turns out that she made it to Harvard too.
Ken sighed and marched toward his room. He opened the door and was greeted by its emptiness. His roommates had all gone out. He fell on his bed with his face feeling thankful that they weren't around to detect his discomfort.
A few minutes later, his phone began to vibrate. Ken got up and pulled the device out of his bag.
"Cassie!" he gasped at the phone screen and quickly picked up the call.
"Where are you?" Cassie asked. Her voice was relegated to the background by noise from different angles which Ken's phone was picking up.
Ken was stunned. "I'm in my room. Is everything okay?"
"I'm on the school premises. In which hostel do you stay?" Cassie asked.
Ken had a shocking expression on his face. Cassie is in Harvard? When did she get there and why didn't she inform him before showing up? He sighed and abruptly stood up.
"Look around Cassie. Where are you? I mean, can you identify any landmark? Maybe there's a signpost around."
"Uhmm, I'm standing beside the third gate. The security guards here won't let the driver take the limo in," she complained in a tone that communicated how pissed she is.
"You brought the limo?" Ken almost yelled and took a deep breath. "You know what? Just stay where you are. I'll be coming to get you." Ken said and hung up. He tucked his phone inside his pants pocket and stormed out of the room, hurrying toward the third gate.
Ken made it to the school's third gate and met a group of students hovering around Cassie like a group of flies. They were whispering to each other. Cassie was resting her back against the car, going through her iPhone.
Ken ran to meet her. She immersed him in a hug. Ken knew that the embrace was bound to attract a lot of eyes. Cassie flipped her polished hair and tucked the phone into her Hermes bag.
"Come with me," Ken said and took her hand. He began leading her into the school.
"What about the car?" she complained and turned to stare at the limousine parked beside the entrance.
Ken sighed and palmed his forehead with his left hand. "The car has to stay here Cassie. You are not a student and to get your vehicle inside will take a lot of processes I don't want to go through."
"Fine. I'll just speak to Larry." Cassie said and walked to the driver's seat. She leaned toward the vehicle and spoke to Larry while Ken watched from a distance.
She swayed her hips rhythmically toward Ken and together, they marched and made their way inside the school.
Students were whispering behind them. Ken didn't know if Cassie could hear them but their whispers made it to his ear.
'That girl owns the Limousine?'
"Did you see her designer bag?" Another girl said.
"She's so hot." A male student remarked.
Ken shook his head and fastened his steps. Cassie was struggling to catch up with him.
'Is she studying here?' a plump girl with a shrill voice commented.
Ken sighed and grabbed Cassie by the arm. He went on dragging her toward his hostel. The whisperings were getting louder. He led Cassie toward his hostel floor and soon, doors started opening and heads began flying out to catch a glimpse of the hot girl.
Cassie and Ken aimed for his door hand in hand. She was clothed in a short gown and was wearing a black Louis Vitton jacket on the red maxi. She wore a black pair of high boots and was carrying her bag with grace.
After a few minutes walk past dozens of wild eyes, they finally made it to Ken's room. Ken shut the door and pulled out a stool for her to sit on. None of his roommates was back.
"This room is not so bad," Cassie commented, her blue eyes shifting from one corner of the room to the other.
"Yeah."
Ken pulled out a soda from his wardrobe and presented it to Cassie. "We don't have a refrigerator so it's not cold."
"No thanks." Cassie rejected the drink by waving her hand down. Ken settled beside her on the bed.
"I felt like dropping by on your first day of school to say hi."
"How thoughtful of you," he replied with a smile, trying to take his mind off the thought that Cassie's flamboyant visit might attract eyes to him.
"Did I blow it off? You think maybe I went a bit extra with the act?" Cassie demanded with dilating pupils.
Ken sighed. "Well, let's talk about the limo first." he began. "Did you rent it again?"
Cassie slumped on the bed and hugged herself. "Well, you didn't complain the first time so.."
"Because you came just on time the other day Cassie" Ken sharply cut in.
There is no denying that Cassie is rich but not as rich as the students now assume. In fact, Miranda's guess was right the whole time. Cassie had been acting all along.
After Cassie found out where Ken had been staying for the past three years, she decided to visit him in a striking way, believing that he was being looked down on by the people around him and it appears she came at the right time, the moment Miranda was breaking up with him.
"Well, I'm sorry if it's getting too dramatic." she apologised and flipped her left palm.
Cassie stared at her bag which was resting on the table. "But you know that bag is mine right?" she bragged to Ken with a smile.
Ken chuckled. "You are a big fish Cassie but guess what?"
"What?" the impatient Cassie asked.
"I bumped into Miranda a while ago?"
Cassie's eyes widened in horror.
Ken saw through her shock. He confirmed with a repeated nod. "Yes, Cassie. She's in Harvard."
"Miranda in Harvard? How?" she stammered.
"She said Charlie's dad helped her secure an admission here and as it stands right now, we are in the same department." Ken disclosed and lowered his head.
Cassie placed a hand on Ken's shoulder. "This must be tough. I'm so sorry bro."
Ken turned to her with a fake smile.
"Did she humiliate you again? I mean did she hurl insults at you or mock your status?"
"It's nothing that I can't handle." Ken maintained.
"So what's your next plan?" Cassie threw the question at him after a sigh.
Ken took his head into his hands. "I have no plans Cassie. I'll just be myself."
She rose to her feet and grabbed her bag. "Well, if you need anything, I'm just a call away," she said.
"I'll see you off." Ken stood up with a smile and walked her out of the room.
Ken lowered his head and held the ropes attached to his backpack with both hands. He was walking out of the hostel. He hurried into the lecture hall and settled at his favourite row; the first row. He could still sense the eyes of some students all over him. The young lecturer walked onto the hall and wrote an equation on the board. He flipped his marker. "So who is going to solve this problem for us?" There was pin drop silence. The lecturer began moving around the hall waving his blue marker. "You guys can't solve a mathematical problem? This is just the basics. Next semester, you'll be advancing to Medicine courses proper."No one spoke. The newbies kept exchanging blank glances. The lecturer returned to the front row. "Finally, we have a hand up. Come over here."Ken stood up and took the marker from the lecturer. He walked to the board and in less than two minutes, the equation was solved. Ken slowly turned around to face the class who were staring at him like an appetising m
Are you sure about this?" Mr Cameron asked Cassie for the umpteenth time."Yes dad." she acknowledged with a nod and went on stirring her tea with a spoon in circles. Her father sighed and went for the toasted bread on the dining table. "I can't promise you Cassie but I'll speak to a few of my contacts and get back to you."Cassie rose to her feet, pulled out her chair and rushed to her father. She wrapped her arms around him from behind. "Thank you so much, dad.""As I said, it's not a promise but I'll see what I can do about it." Cassie smiled and returned to her seat. After pondering about it several times, Cassie had just requested that her father have her transferred from the state university to Harvard. She smiled and took a sip from her tea mug, praying that the process works. When her father demanded the reason for requesting the transfer, Cassie had lied to him that she wasn't getting the best from the state university and she'll only get the standard of education she desir
Ken and Cassie stepped into the RUSTOM cafe beaming with smiles. They settled on the last booth, opposite each other.Cassie busted out laughing after dropping her transfer file on the square table. "Did you see their reaction after you read out from the file that I am now a student of Harvard?"Ken chuckled and waved at the waitress by the counter. "They didn't see the transfer coming and honestly, neither did I."Cassie grabbed the menu card on the table. "I spoke to my dad about the inter-university transfer last week and this morning, my acceptance letter from Harvard arrived."Ken motioned to the waitress to come closer. She leaned toward him and scribbled down the orders he was pointing at from the menu card. The waitress nodded and left."I guess that was the surprise you were talking about when you called me this morning?""Of course," Cassie said and roved her eyes around the cafe. "Well, now that I'm a student here, I'll need a tour of the campus."The plump waitress returne
Cassie looked up to Ken with pitiful eyes. If there's one thing she's certain of is Ken's quest of keeping a low profile but right now, she wasn't sure whether it will be possible.Camera lights kept flickering all over them as more students kept trouping to the scene to catch a glimpse of the battered men. They were taking pictures of the men on the floor."Did Ken beat them?""Damn, they are in a mess.""Are you sure he beat them? There's three of them."More comments kept erupting from the crowd. Cassie held onto Ken's hand and together, they forced their way through the crowd.Ken led Cassie down the street. "I'm sorry, it's all my fault," she mumbled.Ken forced a grin and hailed a cab. "It's not your fault Cassie. I have no regrets," he replied and motioned to her with his head to get into the back seat of the cab.Cassie stepped into the cab and waved at him, her eyes speaking gratitude. "Call me when you get to your hotel room.""Sure," she replied. The cab sped away.Ken tur
Ken glanced at the watch adorning his left wrist. "That's enough for today," he mumbled and closed the anatomy textbook before him. It was almost 11 pm. He needed to get back to his room and rest because he has a morning class to attend the next day. Ken tucked the textbook and his mobile phone inside his bag. He stood up and brushed off his jacket. He had been studying in the multi-purpose for about four hours. Ken hung his bag and made his way out of the hall while whistling an odd tune. He marched toward the dark path the students called 'The lonely path.' The students hardly trespassed on that route, especially at night but Ken takes that route to his hostel every night after studying because it is shorter to get to his hostel using the path. Ken had taken a few steps and was about to take a sharp turn toward the MC ARTHUR hostel when a familiar voice called out to him. He turned around after a sigh. He shifted to the wall and rested his back against it. Miranda was hurrying
Miranda slowly turned around to face Charlie who was taking hurried steps toward her. His blonde hair was tied into a bun. "Hey Charlie!" she waved with a fake smile plastered on her face. Ken sighed and held unto his bag. He'll be glad if Charlie doesn't cause another scene tonight. Charlie grabbed Miranda's both hands forcing her to tremble. He gave Ken a violent stare and looked Miranda straight in the eyes. "What are you doing with him?" Before Miranda could cook up a lie, he released her hands and charged toward Ken with heavy pants. "Did you drag my girl here?" he yelled. Ken cleared his throat and folded his arms across his chest. "Seriously?" Charlie who was facing him roved his eyes around the lonely path and drifted backwards. He had seen the way Ken beat up the three guys he hired to teach him a lesson at the dark valley the other night. Right now, he'll be stupid to pick up a fight with Ken else he'll get beaten. Miranda stood by the corner, her head lowered. She w
Miranda sighed and palmed her forehead with her left hand. "I don't have time for this Charlie," she said and turned around. The agitated Charlie tightened his fists and screamed at her departing figure. "Miranda. Are you walking out on me?" Miranda kept walking away. She didn't turn back to stare at Charlie and the act irked him. Again, he yelled at her. "I'm talking to you Miranda." The pissed Miranda traced her way out of the lonely path. She aimed for the straight path that led to her hostel. Charlie let out a loud groan and took the other route. He strolled to the cafeteria fuming. Charlie entered the cafe and pulled out his phone. He quickly sent a text message to his best buddy after taking a seat in the front row. A few minutes later, Walter, one of Charlie's best pals and acquaintances who had also moved from Boston to Harvard walked into the RUSTOM cafe. He saw Charlie occupying the last row, tapping the table with his head lowered. Walter sighed and headed toward
"Are you sure about this?" Charlie threw the question at Walter as they made their way out of the campus."Trust me, buddy. This time, it will work." Walter promised and motioned to Charlie with his head to turn left. They strode toward the parking lot which was just a few metres away from the campus.A man clothed in black pants and a white tee shirt was standing beside a red car, pacing back and forth. Walter whistled and the boy stopped pacing. He turned toward Walter and Charlie who were taking hurried steps toward him.The boy who was as tall as Charlie stared at his wristwatch and cast his gaze at Walter. "You said 4 pm bro. It's almost 5 pm now." he lamented.Walter stroked his forehead with a sigh. "I'm sorry bro. We had an emergency test so...""Whatever." He sharply cut in and turned to Charlie. "Is he the guy?"Charlie flashed a quick smile and extended his right hand toward the boy they came to meet. "I'm sorry we are late."The boy shook him. "That's okay. I'm Phil." C
