Ken lowered his head and held the ropes attached to his backpack with both hands. He was walking out of the hostel.
He hurried into the lecture hall and settled at his favourite row; the first row. He could still sense the eyes of some students all over him.
The young lecturer walked onto the hall and wrote an equation on the board. He flipped his marker. "So who is going to solve this problem for us?"
There was pin drop silence.
The lecturer began moving around the hall waving his blue marker. "You guys can't solve a mathematical problem? This is just the basics. Next semester, you'll be advancing to Medicine courses proper."
No one spoke. The newbies kept exchanging blank glances. The lecturer returned to the front row.
"Finally, we have a hand up. Come over here."
Ken stood up and took the marker from the lecturer. He walked to the board and in less than two minutes, the equation was solved. Ken slowly turned around to face the class who were staring at him like an appetising meal.
"What's your name?" the lecturer demanded.
Ken shifted his gaze from the class to the lecturer's face. "Ken."
The lecturer turned to the class. "Well, Ken just solved the problem."
Murmurs erupt followed by applause. Ken lowered his head, wondering why he had solved the mathematical problem in the first place. Now, everyone in the class will be talking about him.
After the lecturer went out, A Chinese girl walked up to the first row to meet Ken. Behind her were her friends, smiling at Ken, their arms folded across their chests.
Ken was slipping his notebook inside his bag, getting ready to leave. "Hello, I'm Kim." she introduced herself, extending her right hand to Ken.
Ken stared at her hand which lingered in the air. He didn't even look at her face. Students were hurrying out of the hall.
A boy walked up to the scene and placed a hand on Kim's shoulder. "Back off Kim. He's not into you."
Kim gasped and left the hall with her friends fuming. The students who were still lingering inside the hall broke into a laugh after the boy's comment.
He snatched his bag from the table and dashed out. Ken had concluded that if he is bent on keeping a low profile, he must be careful with the people he mingles with.
Ken was about to get into his hostel when he lifted his head and saw Miranda striding toward him. He sighed and turned away hoping that she doesn't mock him again.
"Hi!" she waved
Ken was still looking away. There was no way he was going to stare into those deceitful hazel eyes.
"I've been trailing you" she spat.
Ken turned around to look at her. She was pressing a book to herself, clothed in one of her red maxis and was wearing her favourite black sandal.
Ken arched his brow. "Trailing me?"
Miranda sighed and took more steps toward him. Male students were hurrying into the hostel while others were speaking in groups.
"Can we talk for a moment?" Miranda requested and turned to stare at the canteen by the right.
Ken folded his arms across his chest. "I don't have time to talk Miranda. The last time we crossed paths, you humiliated me. Why do you want to talk now?"
Miranda sighed and pressed her book to her chest. "Just a few minutes Ken. I promise I won't take much of your time."
"Say all you have to say to me right here, right now. I have a lot of things to attend to." Ken replied with his gaze fixed on her, determined to prove that he is not interested in the so-called conversation
"Okay how about we talk later maybe tonight when we are both free? You can call me then I'll come to meet you up." Miranda suggested.
Ken stared at her in astonishment. Why is she suddenly seeking his attention? Wasn't she the one who mocked him just yesterday? Why does she suddenly want to talk? he couldn't help but wonder.
"I don't have your number anymore Miranda." Ken blurted.
Miranda flashed an impish grin. She was in class when Ken solved that mathematical problem and right now, it didn't matter whether he was her ex or not. Having him on her good side will be of great advantage to her in this institution.
Ken curled his lips in irritation. Didn't you want me out of her life?
Miranda stared at him intently wishing she could scream out to him that she wasn't ready to get back with him but will appreciate it if they become close now that he's starting to get famous.
"Oh come on Ken. People break up right? That's by the way. We can still be friends." she maintained.
Ken broke into a dry laugh. "come on Miranda. You kicked me out of your life. Now you suddenly want to be friends with me?"
There was silence from Miranda's end.
"Fine. If you want me to apologise for what I did to you the other day then I will."
Ken sighed and gave his forehead a delicate scratch. "That's by the way. I have no memory of that day the same way I have no memory of you now," he said, staring directly into her eyes.
Miranda nodded repeatedly. "How's your girl? Cassie right?"
Ken quirked his brow. Did Miranda approach him to talk about his girl or apologise? What does she really want?
"I saw her at the third gate the other day." Miranda sharply added.
"Yea. With her limo right? She's my girlfriend and can come to visit me anytime. Do you have a problem with that?"
Miranda shook her head in disagreement. "Of course, I don't have a problem with that. I still believe she's acting."
"Whatever." Ken fired.
Miranda sighed and was about to speak when two boys from their class walked up to them.
"That was great, man." one of them gave Ken a soft pat on the back. "That equation was cumbersome. You solved it in seconds. Damn, you're a genius."
Ken smiled at the boy "Thanks."
The other boy spoke. "I thought you were just the boy with the hot girl. I saw you and your girl the other day. I stay in this hostel too. Damn, I'm jealous buddy. You have the brains and a hot girl."
Ken smiled. "I guess I'm lucky."
"Fucking lucky. That girl is hot."
The boys waved at Miranda and walked away.
"Who do we have here?" Charlie's voice came ringing from behind.
Ken sighed and turned to face the blonde-haired. Now Charlie is in Harvard too. What a coincidence! he thought.
"Looks like you are still begging my girl for a reunion huh?" Charlie commented after a smirk.
"Why don't you ask your girl?" Ken fired back. He turned around and walked inside the hostel.
Charlie walked up to Miranda and grabbed her hands. "What was that rascal talking about?"
"Let go of me," she yelled and forced her hand out of his grip. Oh, come on Charlie. You can't just grab me like that in public."
"Miranda!"
She ignored Charlie's call and continued walking away after a long hiss.
Charlie clenched his fist. He concluded that Ken was messing with Miranda's head and it resulted in her outburst.
"I'm coming for you, Ken." Charlie declared with bloodshot eyes.
Are you sure about this?" Mr Cameron asked Cassie for the umpteenth time."Yes dad." she acknowledged with a nod and went on stirring her tea with a spoon in circles. Her father sighed and went for the toasted bread on the dining table. "I can't promise you Cassie but I'll speak to a few of my contacts and get back to you."Cassie rose to her feet, pulled out her chair and rushed to her father. She wrapped her arms around him from behind. "Thank you so much, dad.""As I said, it's not a promise but I'll see what I can do about it." Cassie smiled and returned to her seat. After pondering about it several times, Cassie had just requested that her father have her transferred from the state university to Harvard. She smiled and took a sip from her tea mug, praying that the process works. When her father demanded the reason for requesting the transfer, Cassie had lied to him that she wasn't getting the best from the state university and she'll only get the standard of education she desir
Ken and Cassie stepped into the RUSTOM cafe beaming with smiles. They settled on the last booth, opposite each other.Cassie busted out laughing after dropping her transfer file on the square table. "Did you see their reaction after you read out from the file that I am now a student of Harvard?"Ken chuckled and waved at the waitress by the counter. "They didn't see the transfer coming and honestly, neither did I."Cassie grabbed the menu card on the table. "I spoke to my dad about the inter-university transfer last week and this morning, my acceptance letter from Harvard arrived."Ken motioned to the waitress to come closer. She leaned toward him and scribbled down the orders he was pointing at from the menu card. The waitress nodded and left."I guess that was the surprise you were talking about when you called me this morning?""Of course," Cassie said and roved her eyes around the cafe. "Well, now that I'm a student here, I'll need a tour of the campus."The plump waitress returne
Cassie looked up to Ken with pitiful eyes. If there's one thing she's certain of is Ken's quest of keeping a low profile but right now, she wasn't sure whether it will be possible.Camera lights kept flickering all over them as more students kept trouping to the scene to catch a glimpse of the battered men. They were taking pictures of the men on the floor."Did Ken beat them?""Damn, they are in a mess.""Are you sure he beat them? There's three of them."More comments kept erupting from the crowd. Cassie held onto Ken's hand and together, they forced their way through the crowd.Ken led Cassie down the street. "I'm sorry, it's all my fault," she mumbled.Ken forced a grin and hailed a cab. "It's not your fault Cassie. I have no regrets," he replied and motioned to her with his head to get into the back seat of the cab.Cassie stepped into the cab and waved at him, her eyes speaking gratitude. "Call me when you get to your hotel room.""Sure," she replied. The cab sped away.Ken tur
Ken glanced at the watch adorning his left wrist. "That's enough for today," he mumbled and closed the anatomy textbook before him. It was almost 11 pm. He needed to get back to his room and rest because he has a morning class to attend the next day. Ken tucked the textbook and his mobile phone inside his bag. He stood up and brushed off his jacket. He had been studying in the multi-purpose for about four hours. Ken hung his bag and made his way out of the hall while whistling an odd tune. He marched toward the dark path the students called 'The lonely path.' The students hardly trespassed on that route, especially at night but Ken takes that route to his hostel every night after studying because it is shorter to get to his hostel using the path. Ken had taken a few steps and was about to take a sharp turn toward the MC ARTHUR hostel when a familiar voice called out to him. He turned around after a sigh. He shifted to the wall and rested his back against it. Miranda was hurrying
Miranda slowly turned around to face Charlie who was taking hurried steps toward her. His blonde hair was tied into a bun. "Hey Charlie!" she waved with a fake smile plastered on her face. Ken sighed and held unto his bag. He'll be glad if Charlie doesn't cause another scene tonight. Charlie grabbed Miranda's both hands forcing her to tremble. He gave Ken a violent stare and looked Miranda straight in the eyes. "What are you doing with him?" Before Miranda could cook up a lie, he released her hands and charged toward Ken with heavy pants. "Did you drag my girl here?" he yelled. Ken cleared his throat and folded his arms across his chest. "Seriously?" Charlie who was facing him roved his eyes around the lonely path and drifted backwards. He had seen the way Ken beat up the three guys he hired to teach him a lesson at the dark valley the other night. Right now, he'll be stupid to pick up a fight with Ken else he'll get beaten. Miranda stood by the corner, her head lowered. She w
Miranda sighed and palmed her forehead with her left hand. "I don't have time for this Charlie," she said and turned around. The agitated Charlie tightened his fists and screamed at her departing figure. "Miranda. Are you walking out on me?" Miranda kept walking away. She didn't turn back to stare at Charlie and the act irked him. Again, he yelled at her. "I'm talking to you Miranda." The pissed Miranda traced her way out of the lonely path. She aimed for the straight path that led to her hostel. Charlie let out a loud groan and took the other route. He strolled to the cafeteria fuming. Charlie entered the cafe and pulled out his phone. He quickly sent a text message to his best buddy after taking a seat in the front row. A few minutes later, Walter, one of Charlie's best pals and acquaintances who had also moved from Boston to Harvard walked into the RUSTOM cafe. He saw Charlie occupying the last row, tapping the table with his head lowered. Walter sighed and headed toward
"Are you sure about this?" Charlie threw the question at Walter as they made their way out of the campus."Trust me, buddy. This time, it will work." Walter promised and motioned to Charlie with his head to turn left. They strode toward the parking lot which was just a few metres away from the campus.A man clothed in black pants and a white tee shirt was standing beside a red car, pacing back and forth. Walter whistled and the boy stopped pacing. He turned toward Walter and Charlie who were taking hurried steps toward him.The boy who was as tall as Charlie stared at his wristwatch and cast his gaze at Walter. "You said 4 pm bro. It's almost 5 pm now." he lamented.Walter stroked his forehead with a sigh. "I'm sorry bro. We had an emergency test so...""Whatever." He sharply cut in and turned to Charlie. "Is he the guy?"Charlie flashed a quick smile and extended his right hand toward the boy they came to meet. "I'm sorry we are late."The boy shook him. "That's okay. I'm Phil." C
Ken took sluggish steps into his room. He crashed by the edge of his bed after a deep sigh. Thank goodness he was done for the day. He left the room at 7 am and just returned. It was past 5 pm."Seems like someone had a stressful day," Mark commented. He jumped down from his bed and pulled out a bottle of orange juice from his wardrobe. He passed it to Ken.Ken took the bottle with a smile and sat up. "Thank you.""You're welcome.""So where are the guys?" he asked with his gaze fixed at the corner belonging to Berry and their other roommate."They just left a while ago. They didn't last a second after coming in.""Busy guys huh?" Ken replied and took off the bottle's cap. Mark grabbed a stool and settled opposite him. "They are final year students so they have to step up."Ken agreed with a nod. "That's cool." he emptied half the content into his mouth and dropped the bottle on the table. "You saved my hungry ass bro.""Anytime," Ken replied with a blink. "So tell me, is that Charli
