Chapter Four

The Palmview estate was a popular estate, known and exclusively made and reserved for the very rich and powerful, it was the priciest estate to live in, Lake City.

Cash trudged on towards his home, if he could even call the place home, he sneered at himself, and he reluctantly pulled himself towards Kenton’s mansion, which was his residence in the revered Palmview Estate.

The Kenton Mansion was situated in the hub of the gated estate of the elites. The mansion was one of the biggest in the estate and easily the prettiest, with its well-kept lawns and garden, as well as a tennis lawn and a swimming pool that ran hot or cold. The house was a humongous beauty, and her occupants knew this.

After his walk of shame earlier at the office, Cash had hidden himself in the locker room, loathing himself while unloading the pain and tears in his eyes. He impatiently waited for the close of work to enable him to make his escape and avoid the tauntings of those who had witnessed the face-off, refusing to come out, despite the encouragement from his friend George. He had been thankful that his supervisor hadn't sought him out or assigned a task to him.

At the close of work, he had purposely waited for the workers to disperse before surfacing, he wanted to avoid any embarrassment. He had also been reluctant to head back home, he didn't want to come across his wife or any trouble from any member of her family. His friend George, seeing his reluctance, offered for Cash to follow him home for the day, but Cash had politely declined, no matter how tempting the offer had been.

Grudgingly, Cash trudged on and finally got to the security post of the mansion, before he could knock on the gate, the security guard came out scowling at Cash,

“If it isn't the inconsequential husband of Kenton’s household.” opening the gate, he bowed in mockery at Cash “You are welcome back Your Majesty!” he taunted.

“Every other person drove in here with their various luxurious cars and even power bikes, but yet you proudly WALK and waltz in with your two left feet. How pathetic” he pulled the gate halfway and stopped, blocking Cash’s part, making jest of Cash was usually the highlight of his day, and he wasn't going to stop anytime soon.

“There’s something you should know, that I ought to tell you, you know, safeguarding life and property” he winked at Cash, smiling slightly before he continued, “Men like you, are easily replaceable, you know that right? But that's not what I have to tell you, what I have to tell you is that…” pausing once more, he raked his eyes over Cash’s body and snickered and shook his head “Naa, where's the fun in it, if I do tell you myself? Godspeed my friend” he moved away for Cash to pass, still snickering.

Cash ignored him and limped in, but he couldn't help but notice the knowing smirk on the guard’s face. Shaking his head to clear his mind he plodded towards the house, the guard was of no importance.

“You know, I greatly admire their company, as well as that family. The company's stock has never dropped since it entered the stock market. Impressive I must confess” Cash could hear his father-in-law’s voice as he approached the main entrance to the foyer.

The man’s voice sounded alien to Cash’s ears, even if his voice was familiar; he hardly heard admiration or praise in the voice of Trent Kenton, at least his father-in-law had never spoken to him in that tone before.

Curious to know the person his father-in-law was talking with, Cash gently pushed open the heavy bronze door, and as he did, he was reminded of the pain in his foot, courtesy of the bloody jerk that had stomped on his feet, attempting to mask the pain in his leg, and his limping strolled inside and was met with the various scowls and sneers of his in-laws

“Ladies and gentlemen, our wretched and useless son-in-law and brother-in-law has arrived. Can we please have a round of applause for his grand appearance?” David, Vivian’s brother announced mockingly, causing each and everyone present to burst out laughing, hands pointed at him, making jest of him.

“You should have s-een the way Vivian dealt with the fool today at the office, his wretched Highness could not even utter a word or defend himself, so pathetic” one of the female cousins exclaimed in between laughter, clutching her stomach in laughter as she recalled the event.

“I saw it all on tape, someone had the decency and proactiveness to record the incident. I saw it all on his phone, he sent it to those who asked. I have it if you're interested in watching it. I must say it was really laughable, I would hate to be him at that moment” another cousin amused.

Lips strewn together tightly, Cash took in all the insults and mockery thrown at him, he wasn't even aware that the incident had been recorded and shared in the office, he was used to it, used to be the laughingstock, both in the office and at home. One thing he was thankful for, was that his young daughter wasn't present to see her father’s disgrace, and was too young to understand even if she was present.

“He can't even say anything to defend himself”

“How can he, when he's nothing but a weakling” he heard Cassie respond, and he hung his head, fighting back tears, the odds and number weren't in his favour, so he couldn't defend himself, if he dared, he would be rubbished by them.

The door opened behind him, the aun reflecting its light into the house, Cash smelt her, her Daffodilily perfume filling his nostrils, he didn't have to turn to know who had entered the mix.

Turning to acknowledge her presence, he pasted a sweet smile on his face, and as he did, his smile morphed into an instant frown as his eyes travelled the length of the person beside her. Cheeks on fire, eyes turning red and popping out of the socket, he glared and uttered

“You again!?”
