Chapter Three

Cash stared at her in disbelief, jaw-dropping, his mouth wide open, he could hardly form words to respond to her attack. He was too poor to be manhandling what he truly couldn't afford, ‘but that still doesn't give her the right to talk to you that way!’ his mind taunted him.

He moved to talk and defend himself but the next action of the stranger had him swallowing the words while he seethed in anger and embarrassment.

The man drew Vivian back into his embrace and placing a sloppy kiss on her lips, finally broke his silence

“It's okay baby, some people cannot identify value and luxury even if it's thrown in their faces” while he spoke, he kept his gaze on Cash, and increased his voice, subtly glancing at the door. Following his gaze, Cash slightly turned to look back, and realised he left the door open when he had entered, giving rise to a growing audience in the form of his colleagues and in-laws, at the sight, he hung his head as tears gathered in his eyes.

Cash felt utterly humiliated, and wished for the ground to open and consume him, the mumblings of the audience that flowed into his ears didn't help matters.

“Oh, it's the cleaning guy who can't seem to keep his pocket and marriage clean”

“The dude is so pathetic. I can't stand him, I wonder how his wife does”

“You know what, I still find it hard to believe that the beautiful and graceful Vivian is married to that clown. He's such a douchébag” he clearly heard one of them express, giving a long hiss as he did.

Vivian, although embarrassed at being caught inappropriately by her colleagues in the workplace, waved off the feeling, and allowed pride to consume her. Chin held high, she approached her miserable husband with a scowl on her face; he was going to get his comeuppance for leaving the door ajar, and causing a scene.

Leaving the embrace of her lover, she walked determinedly towards Cash, the fool had the decency to lift his head, fear crossing his face, giving her the pleasure of doing what she was about to

Without thinking nor hesitating, she smiled smugly at Cash and simultaneously landed a hot slap on his already-reddened cheeks

Whack

His head and body spun back uncontrollably causing him to stumble, she watched in satisfaction as his eyes reddened, while he held his cheeks, leaning into his ears, she whispered

“That's for leaving the door open, you incompetent fool”

Standing tall, with chin held high, she ran her hands down her skirt and waltzed back to where her lover stood proudly. As she walked, she heard how their audience reacted to her actions, and it gave her a sense of accomplishment.

“Oohh, that's surely going to leave a sting”

“I'm glad I am not the one receiving that slap”

Cash stood rooted to the ground, unable to move an inch, his hand still touching and feeling the sting on his face, he silently cursed the day, and his stupid attempt at being a good husband.

“There's no drama to see here, you jobless lot! Vivian, it's not your fault that you dare to raise your hands on your husband, considering the kind of grandmother that you have, I'm not surprised.” these and more were the things Cash ached to throw back at all of them, but he kept mute knowing fully well that if he did, he would be digging his grave, and setting himself up for drags.

Justin, the stranger who had previously been locking lips with Cash’s wife, sneered at Cash, feeling utterly revolted by his sight, with cold eyes he wrinkled his nose in disgust as he stared at Cash.

Emboldened by Vivian’s behaviour, and the goadings of the people present, he strove to humiliate the fellow further.

If not for the wretched guy’s interruption, Vivian would have been about to take him to cloud nine, but his overzealousness as a husband had deprived Justin of the right he had been about to take.

The loss infuriated him, and seeking to have his pound of flesh, he covered the short distance between them, narrowing his eyes at Cash, he harshly shoved him and was pleased to see him stumble, his fist itched to graze Cash’s face, but he refrained himself for another time.

Standing toe to toe, and face to face with the cowering bastard, Justin got in his face, causing Cash to lean back, he glared at him contemptuously and told him, spitting into his face as he did

“That is to teach you manners, to always knock before entering a room you're not occupying. If you do not want to see the things you shouldn't, then learn to knock! You can't just barge into your superior’s office in that manner you fool! One other thing, it's also payback for how you handled my shirt just now.”

He made to turn around to head back in his former direction, and suddenly turned to face Cash, a sinister look taking residence on his countenance, leering at Cash, he winked before raising his foot and promptly stomping it on Cash’s foot, who groaned out in pain and bent low at the waist, tears streaming down his eyes.

Justin smiled smugly and shook his head, clapping a bent Cash on his back before he went over to Vivian who looked like he hung the moon, she was ready to show him how much she appreciated him, they kept their gaze on each other and Justin smacked his lips in anticipation.

Bent over, tears strolled down a silent Cash’s face, and he watched as each teardrop fell on the ground, he found himself wishing the fallen teardrops were actually his enemies and tormentors, hoping he could one day see to their downfall.

Back in the embrace of Justin her lover, Vivian tired of the jobless audience glared at the door and each of them, and snapped at them,

“Get back to work, all of you! There's no drama to see here. We do not pay you to loiter about!” she yelled, as she narrowed her eyes at them. Scared, a few of them scrambled away, wanting to avoid her wrath, while a few, including her family, lingered about.

Clenching her jaw, her nose and face wrinkled; a pinched expression on her face, she crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes on a bent Cash, sneering

“Get yourself out of my office you fool!” Cash who was still bent over in pain, and carried away in self-loathe and pity didn't make any move to leave, stomping her fist, she clenched her first before snapping at him,

“I'm talking to you Cash, leave my office now!” her scream broke into his state, and he staggered to his feet. Without sparing her or her lover a glance, he staggered to the door and squeezed his way through the people who still lingered by the door. Walking away, he could hear their laughter, and derision as he walked away in shame.
