Chapter 8

Tristan's eyes widened in surprise as he flashed Ryan a rapid series of blinks. With a resounding clatter, his fork hit the plate as he shot Ryan a thumbs up.

"My oh my, you're quite the wordsmith! Impressive insult, my friend!"

Ryan's smirk twisted into a sneer as he corrected him, "You misunderstand me. He's not worth my time or effort to insult. I'm simply stating a fact."

Sarah could feel her blood boil at Ryan's callous words. With a surge of rage, she snatched the soup bowl from Ray's hand and confronted him with tears streaming down her face.

"Are you a fool? How can you still have an appetite for soup? Don't you hear how they're mocking you?"

Ray let out a burp before responding with indifference, "Why should I care? Would you get mad if some ants started shouting at you? If they're bothering you, just step on them."

Sarah was stunned by Ray's nonchalance. Over the past three years of their marriage, she had grown accustomed to the insults aimed at him. As long as they didn't target her, she could ignore them. But today, for some reason, she couldn't hold back her tears.

Sophia, who had been silent up until now, spoke up. Seeing her sister's tear-streaked face, she felt a pang of sympathy. She knew Sarah didn't deserve this treatment and decided to take action.

"Grandma, I think Sarah should go to the Garcia welcome party. She graduated from a prestigious university and is the most capable person at Peters Realty. Plus, Alice doesn't have any knowledge about engineering or construction. Even if she gets the chance to speak with the bigwigs, she won't be able to hold their attention."

Monica was lost in thought, considering the point that had been made. Sophia looked at Sarah with pride, attempting to make amends for her previous betrayal.

However, before Monica could make her decision known, Alice erupted in anger, condemning Sophia for her audacity. Alice brought up the embezzlement of 1.2 million by Sophia's mother and the offense caused to Mr. Cole from Oscorp Corporation  by both Lori and Ray, nearly resulting in the ruin of their company. Alice expressed her disbelief that Sophia would even ask Monica's husband to help get Lori into the party, considering the disgrace it would bring upon their family if she were to represent them in public. The entire Peters family turned their disdainful gazes towards Sarah. Alice's words struck a chord with Sarah, who found herself unable to bear the thought of running naked with Ray. She was so distraught that she retreated to her bedroom, crying into a pillow. Ray, however, was not deterred by Alice's harsh words. He left the table with a piercing glare at her and her husband, then found Sarah in her bedroom, still crying. Ray comforted her and made her an offer: instead of running, he would take her to the welcome party.

"Would you trust me?" he asked, kindly. "We won't need to go running. Do you want to go?"

Sarah's tear-filled gaze met his, and she uttered with a choked voice, "Please leave."

Ray didn't react with anger. Instead, he offered a tissue to Sarah, rose from his seat, and quietly exited the room. "Take care of your makeup," he advised, with a compassionate tone.

Outside, Ray retrieved his phone and deftly composed a message to Eli. He felt a sense of relief as he hit the send button and looked forward to what tomorrow had in store. It promised to be an intriguing day, indeed.
