Noticing that Violet hadn't caught up with him yet, Victor stopped and called out to her. "Don't stay there or go home alone," he said half threateningly. Violet regains her focus and catches up with Victor as they walk toward a car parked some distance from where they last spoke.

Victor started the engine and drove away from the French Quarter. At the start of the ride, Violet asked, "What do you have to do here?" to Victor, who was focused on driving his black luxury car.

"I wanted to go somewhere."

"Does that include your job?"

"No, it doesn't. I'm free today, so I went on personal business. But I saw you at the street market, looking so happy that you wouldn't even notice if someone came to kidnap you."

Violet pursed her lips again. Victor's words were economical, but sometimes they sounded scathing and emotionally draining. Fortunately, Violet wasn't the type of person who was easily provoked, so it was no problem for her to reply to his harsh words with something similar.
