Chapter 7: I have to kill the android

Mister Wigglesworth sat up from his chair "You lost the machine!?" He looked dismal and I raked my hair feeling terrible and all the same useless.

"I'm sorry, I just didn't want Morty to get vaporized. But we can find her, right?" I encouraged.

He worked on his computer fixated. "No, Klozandroids are extremely hard to pursue, especially one that shapeshifts," He said and I gulped.

"I don't have much time. Ash gave me 2 days and this is the second." He searched his monitor for anything suspicious on the map. "And they are extremely dangerous,"

His eyes stirred momentarily and then he passed me a small cardboard parcel. I took it and read the label, unfolding it to pick out a key. It jingled in my hand.

"What's this for?" I read the caption and, it had the VW sign. I realized that letter V was actually a boomerang. A decoy.

"It's the key to the Volkswagon Bug,"

"You want me to ride that hunk of junk?" Seriously? I'd be the laughingstock of the entire town. I wouldn't want Amir to see me riding in that.

"Wait, the car morphs right?"

Mister Wigglesworth laughed. "Yes."

My first contraption, better than anything my dad could get me but there was no chance in hell that I was riding that thing out in the open. Unless I could turn it into a mustang.

"That's the heart of the mecha," He explained and my eyes rounded sitting up from his couch.

"Why would you give me the heart of the mecha?"

He rubbed his face, stressed out. "Listen, Dexter, the council has contacted me for questioning and as terrible as it sounds... I'm waiting a trial." He scratched his head looking upwards.

"You're leaving?" I said shaking my head and searched for an ounce of entertainment in his eyes. I can't live knowing there were androids after me.

"You've gotta be kidding, right?"

His eyes were hooded and he patted my shoulder. "It's only for a little while. I was guaranteed a redemption but by law, I am also guaranteed a death penalty,"

"You can stay here, no one will know," I beckoned.

"The thing about Teyen is that he knows me so well. I'd never give up Zoldor for anything. Never. I brought this upon myself. The council are merciless and they'll conclude that I pilfered the mecha and scuttled off on my own,"

So I've killed my helper and worse, I've put his entire home planet in mortal danger. I shook with fear. Oh god. I couldn't let that vision come to pass. It was too soon.

He looked uncertain too and he made that clear. "If I don't make it_I'm putting all my hopes on you to look after the heart. It's a very vital part of the mecha. The Overlord may find the other parts but Zoldor can't commit without the heart or its key.

"And so I choose you Zachary Trevor to be the next Mecha Knight,"

Okay, I think Tech voice in my head made that clear but he was giving me his approval.

"It's too soon," My shoulders shook, brushing a tear off.

"Dexter, we all make mistakes and that's fine_"

"But what about your promise? What am I supposed to do?"

"At least you have people who care about you and that's a heavy burden, until you let them down," He felt guilty. But I WAS guilty.

"What's done is done!" He said sternly to get me to shut up and my hands dropped in shock.

"The council will never let an earthling wield a Mecha and that's why you need to stay here,"

"I can't do this on my own,"

"You're a clever boy, Dexter, I don't expect you of all people, to bawl about a challenge. Then he softened. "After all, you've saved your bestfriend from a cruel fate, why not the others?"

I reexamined that and I stood up tall wiping my eyes dry. "Zack,"

He softened and grinned. "I know,"

His eyes strayed to his watch. "With the little time we have. I have to train you on how to use your new powers," He vouched and my stomach knotted again. He was really being serious.

...

The training setting was comfortable regardless. Dew drops and pockets of light fell from the leak holes into the building. Although it never rained and I stepped around a puddle.

"What is this crap?" I flung up an old banner reading about an old grilled cheese recipe. Italian.

"What were you expecting, a high tech training facility?" He retorted.

This place hadn't been used since the 90s and I spotted a few scribbles on the walls and someone grafittied a tongue on the floor where water dropped. "Hehe," I snickered. Pulling up my white sleeves.

"Are you ready?" He opened a suitcase and a robot unfolded stepping out and it doubled. To a red and blue copy.

"You didn't say this wasn't a fair fight!" I dodged the lasers and it got me on the side, my clothes steamed and I looked at him in shock. He shrugged hugging his blue coat and they did that ninja run on me and shuffled on the way toward me even though they had no weapons.
