The Government Finally Speaks

"When will you be leaving?" BJ's mother asked. She still looked worried.

"Tomorrow morning?"

I shook my head.

"Night seems a better option. The fog will surely act like camouflage, and with the thermal sensory of the drones, Bella and Samson will be able to detect them easily and give us feedback.

I have connected all of our devices to one transmitter so we can all listen to each other and communicate through our earphones,"

They nodded at my explanation, which made me glad because I hadn't been sure they would understand all my explanations.

So, we agreed that we were going to move in that morning. There was a store down Bella's street and another one two streets away.

One was a pharmaceutical store, and the other was a superstore where we could also get food supplies.

We had decided to visit both since medical supplies were just as important.

=====

I was in the room, looking to see if I could change my clothes, but unfortunately, since this wasn't my house and Bella's siblings were kids, none of their clothes could fit me.

They were too short in comparison to my 6'2 frame.

I was still on the same Brownish red jacket, silver shirt, and black pants. I wore to work almost two weeks ago. I had been washing and reusing repeatedly since we got stuck here.

I wanted to change to black, which would suit the night operation, but it looked like that was impossible.

'Maybe I should dye it,' This thought suddenly crossed my mind when I heard Sofia's loud voice from the living room.

"Come and watch the news!"

"And see, another broadcaster die?" I asked as I hadn't forgotten that woman's death.

"They said it's from the mayor himself!"

'Hmm? The mayor himself is addressing the masses?' I couldn't ignore that.

When I got downstairs, it was as though the others had already arrived and took different positions before the TV.

The background looked like some kind of office, and standing before the camera was the mayor of NG City.

Mayor Williams's head gleamed with sweat, with his face displaying an expression of exhaustion, but as he began to speak, his voice was laced with determination.

"Citizens of NG city, I stand before you today from a bunker, to address the latest crisis: the infected outbreak.

The military has been working tirelessly to contain the spread of the and protect our citizens.

They have been successful in slowing the spread, but the threat is still very real. The infected are relentless and will not hesitate to attack and infect more people. As a result, we must be vigilant and prepared—"

"Isn't that what we've been doing since?" Bella asked angrily. "What is he talking—"

"Bella!" Emma whispered hotly.

"Shush," I made a gesture with my index finger resting on my lips.

She opened her mouth to speak and then shut it the next second while displaying a cute pout.

The voice of our mayor went on.

"—remain united and work together to combat this threat. We must also remember to stay calm and follow the instructions of our military.

As said in the last broadcast, we have the shelters ready so the military will be coming to escort everyone to the strongholds soon. I want you all to remember that the future is still bright. This is not the end. Thank you for your courage and strength."

The screen went blank just like what happened the other time, except that there was no infected attacking anyone.

Just like that, we had been encouraged to hold on as the military's focus was now to get citizens to the shelter.

But the main question was: Were they going to come before we died of hunger?

=====

On the day the mayor's video was broadcast, several videos were also addressed to the public in other cities.

They all had one thing in common: the military was on its way, and the citizens needed to wait while being vigilant.

The people also had a collective response, which was the question of when the military would really appear. However, they had no answer as everyone, including the Mayors and Presidents were also in hiding.

The military in NG city was doing its best.

In a particular location...

The smell of smoke and gunpowder hung in the air.

The soldiers, instructed by a commander, had set up an encampment of tents around the perimeter of a large area, protected by heavy tall walls and laser trip wires atop them.

They had dealt with the infected within the perimeter, and now they were dealing with the ones outside.
