2 A Painful Realization

The person standing at the doorway was none other than his wife, Melissa, and she was dressed in her Lauren Martins designer green dress that complemented her green shoes and purse. She was dressed like the wealthy woman that she was and it was almost impossible to believe that she was the wife of the average-looking man who stood before her in the cafe.

She was the person he needed to see at that moment so her sudden appearance made him stop in his tracks.

"Melissa...." he muttered to himself,

The secretary who had been raining threats on Leo grinned widely when he saw that Leo had stopped, he thought that his threats had worked and he rushed forward to confront him while spewing more insults.

"I knew it! You're a coward who can't even stand on his own decision! You better listen to me now or else...."

He suddenly saw Melissa and he stopped in his tracks just like Leo did.

He was a bit overwhelmed by her sudden appearance but he quickly got over it and bowed to her. "Welcome ma, thank goodness you're here."

The beautiful, bodacious woman who had been standing quietly at the doorway of the restaurant fluttered her eyelashes gently and fixed her gaze on her secretary.

He instantly felt butterflies flutter persistently in his stomach as she looked at him but he forced himself to maintain his composure. "He wants more money ma.... the greedy fool is not content."

A small frown made its way to her lips and she gestured to one of the empty tables in the cafe, "Let's have a seat."

Leo was hesitant for a moment but he quickly made up his mind and sat down with her and her secretary on the table.

"Okay let's just go straight to the point..." She started, "You can have the house."

She paused for a moment to see Leo's reaction but he didn't look impressed at all. There was a look of deep hurt in his eyes but Melissa misunderstood it for greed and discontent so she continued.

"This..." she placed a golden-colored credit card on the table, "...is a card that contains one million dollars. You can use it as you please."

She paused again for a reaction from Leo but his expression was still the same.

The secretary suddenly got infuriated by Leo's nonchalance and lack of excitement. He mistook it for greed and he barked at him, "You are a very greedy man! How can all these offers not entice you? Do you want her to give you the whole world before you agree? Do you know that these offers are worth a hundred times more than the assistance you claim to have given my boss and her family?"

"Do you also think that all I want is money?"

"I'm just trying to make sure that you don't worry about working to earn a living in the future," Melissa replied with a shrug.

'I'm not that pathetic....'

He heard his wife's name again from the newscaster on the television.

"Now on celebrity news, our three-time winner of the Businesswoman of the Year award, Melissa Dubois has been trending massively in celebrity circles as rumors have been circulating that she is in a low-key relationship with Baron Ax, the multimillionaire heir of the Ax family. Members of the press have reportedly released pictures of them together at luxurious shopping malls and restaurants..."

"Is he the one behind the divorce?"

Melissa seemed shocked at the sudden revelation that had been made by the newscaster. The expression on her face was a mixture of guilt and surprise.

Subconsciously, she nodded in response and averted her gaze from his own in discomfort.

Leo sighed heavily and leaned back on his chair. He felt as if his whole world was crashing around him.

It was only then that he realized that he loved her so much that he failed to notice that they had drifted far apart as a couple. Judging by the look in her eyes, he knew that there was no going back.

Some customers in the cafe recognized Melissa and instantly flocked around her for autographs and selfies.

Leo watched her as she signed autographs and took selfies with people. The more he watched her, the more he realized that he had to come to terms with the reality that his wife was now an entirely different person. She was now out of his league.

"Alright then," Leo finally spoke up after an awfully long spell of silence, "I'll sign the document, but on one condition."

"and what's that?"

"You'll return the necklace that I gave to you on our wedding day."

"Is that all?" Melissa asked sadly as she took the necklace off and placed it on the table. It was almost as if she hated what she was doing but she had no choice but to do it.

"Yes," Leo replied as he pocketed the necklace and signed the document.

While he was on his way out, his phone rang.

"No need anymore," Leo said as he brought the phone to his ear.
