[Hmm, that greeting from the raven might not have been for your benefit. Seems it caught Black Ash Snow's attention and he's on his way from the back room.]
'I can sorta understand getting MF's attention between the rainbow disaster and how much money I spent, but I really don't know why Ash is in on it too.'
[Who could say?]
The raven seems to have become greatly agitated all of a sudden, hopping from side to side while making a grand display of flapping its wings. With its croaking squawks of varying intensity, it seems to feel the cause is urgent.
'What's got him all riled up all of a-'
As Lucas turns his attention from the fluffy cuteness back up to the irritated bird, Lucas notices the reflection of what's going on behind him on the glass window.
[Oh shit. It shouldn't have even had a chance to build up that much speed.]
Too late to do anything about it, a small box truck that just made a slight left turn pops up over the curb of the sidewalk, taking the five waiting pedestrians along with it into the front of Faunahorde on its two left wheels. At the moment before impact, Lucas could see the driver in the reflection, looking completely calm.
Due to what limited enhanced resilience Lucas has tied to his enhanced strength, the impact alone doesn't immediately take him out. The other four, on the other hand, are already done for.
In a sickening wet crunch, more than one spine has been shattered nearby. Blood is already starting to spread out as the front of the truck makes a few fleshy sandwiches with the large glass windows at the front of Faunahorde.
In an explosion of bloodied shattered glass, the front cab still travels several feet more into the building, accumulating some feathers and fur along with various pet care goods in its path. While the vehicle itself has finally been slowed to a stop, the driver has been launched out of the windshield past the crushed victims, through the brick wall into the shop next door.
Lucas has a few slowly fading moments of lingering consciousness, largely spent being furious about the fates of the other victims beyond himself.
He can vaguely see the driver calmly stand up and dust himself off in the next store over. After a moment of grooming himself, he takes off through the rear exit of the shop, not shedding so much as a single drop of blood.
'Yo, fuck that guy.'
[Lu-]
Gasping deeply and leaning forward into the start of a fetal curl, Lucas snaps his attention up to see what his situation is. Looking straight at him is the raven perched on the edge of the window display, fluttering its wings once and giving him a single croaking squawk.
[-cas. There isn't enough time to get a formal task issued, but you'll certainly get a GDV reward if you stop it and reduce the damage inflicted.]
'More like reduce that asshole's face. Taking out people is one thing, but innocent animals too, that is fucking inexcusable.'
Jonathan notices Lucas's telltale gasp and seems familiar with what it indicates after the subway incident. Noticing Lucas spinning in place to look at the far road that runs alongside Mind Flare's Fashion Boutique, he also promptly turns to look.
Barreling down the road is the offending box truck in the central right-hand lane. They hadn't been particularly aware of the increase in honking from the various cars last time, but now that they see it in action they realize that's where all the honking had been coming from.
Watching as the truck veers through the intersection turning slightly to face in their direction, Lucas starts taking two steps towards it and swinging out his right fist to directly punch the front of the truck just as it starts to ride up the curb.
[Wait, the concentrated force will just-]
Lucas's fist tears through the steel as if it were mere paper, making a fist-sized hole driving through the radiator into the engine. With a sudden small point of release, the coolant explodes outward in a boiling spray, covering Lucas.
As if the disturbingly appetizing scent of cooked human flesh wasn't enough, the truck doesn't lose much speed and still proceeds up the curb and through the front of the building, roughly the same as last time.
The other key difference is that Jonathan is aware in advance of what's occurring. Seeing Lucas fail to stop the truck, he tries to tackle him from the side to push him from danger. While Lucas was able to puncture the steel with no effort on his part, it doesn't change the fact his arm is now lodged inside and Jonathan isn't strong enough to have any impact, only accomplishing getting his own coating of scalding coolant before his transformation into a sandwich.
Lurching forward with a deep gasp, Lucas stabilizes his breathing and makes eye contact with the raven, getting the same flutter and croak. Jonathan's attention is caught once again and they both turn to face the oncoming truck.
Lucas takes a slow, deep, breath as he takes these few available seconds to think.
'Okay so punching, not so good.'
[All the force in one spot just punctured through as you saw, instead of slowing down the rest of it all.]
'Okay, so gotta spread it out more, got it. Round two, fight!'
[Uhh...]
"Watch out, brat." Lucas gives a small heads up as he begins to prepare himself to try and wrestle the oncoming truck, both hands held before him with their palms facing outward towards the oncoming challenger.
Unfortunately, he didn't really get to brace himself much against the concrete of the sidewalk.
With arms spread wide, he manages to grab the two outer edges of the front of the cab. By spreading out force distribution and getting a grasp on something with structural support, he does manage to slow down the momenta of the oncoming vehicle. However, there is still more than enough power to violently drive him back. This directly leads to the unfortunate scenario of being pinned between the short brick wall under the window display and the now smashed-up front of the truck.
His back hits the window with enough force to cause instantaneous spiderweb cracks to form along the entirety of it. The last bit of force before the truck comes to a complete stop pushes that small amount more necessary to shatter it, tearing his back to shreds in the process.
With the window gone, the cacophony of numerous animals screaming in their individual fashions floods the area. In a vaguely similar fashion, the various nearby pedestrians have scattered, fleeing the scene.
While his actions did, technically, protect everyone else, his own state is... Rather lacking. His ribs are at the very least cracked, and given the escalating difficulty he's having with breathing, there's a high chance he is now in possession of more holes than is normally medically recommended in his lungs. Spitting up a choking breath of blood seems to further demonstrate this possibility.
[With your current condition, you're probably not gonna make it. There really isn't anything for you to properly brace against either if you wanted to try that route again...]
Jonathan is fretting and trying to help push the truck back a bit to help Lucas free his crushed lower legs. Lucas goes to shove the truck away but feels weak, instead just deciding to lean forward against it, all while struggling to breathe.
The truck driver has glared down at Lucas for a moment, now going to open the door and let himself out. Looking back up at him after spitting out another mouthful of blood, Lucas slowly raises his right hand, flipping him off.
In these few long moments, Mind Flare and Josephine have run out of their HQ, coming out onto the crosswalk towards them. When a car nearly hits them, Josephine simply raises a hand and snaps in its direction, the sudden force pushing in the center of its front fender and forcing it to a stop a few inches away.
'That's not fair...'
When they are halfway through the crosswalk, the driver has gotten out of the truck and started running. With a bloodied, slow-moving hand, Lucas simply points at him.
Mind Flare gets the message, however, even if Jonathan didn't. It turns out, the driver's enhanced resilience didn't include his brain. As his skull was unnaturally strong, his brain has to force itself out of the naturally available openings, making for quite the gruesome sight.
Lucas can't help smiling a bit, even if he knows it isn't a permanent resolution.
He's not entirely sure when it happened, but the raven is now perched on the crumpled front of the truck, facing Lucas silently.
"There's gotta be a healer somewhere. We'll get you to them, don't worry. You'll be fine, you're gonna be fine. Come on Lucas, you gotta push, I can't do it. You're gonna be fine. You gotta be fine." Jonathan seems to lose his normal nervous stutter, seems it might normally just be a social issue.
The pet store behind him has fallen nearly silent, but there are still the sounds of movement. Surprisingly, the raven is the only animal to exit the store, even though there is plenty of other unrestrained ones inside.
Mind Flare has reached his side and Josephine is walking back and forth trying to figure out a good angle to work from in order to move the truck without hurting him further.
'I'm a little surprised that they genuinely seem to want to help? I'm no good to them like this.'
[Well, if they bring you to a healer in time you'd be indebted to them. I'm not aware of any healers being part of their organization, though.]
'Ah... Yeah... That makes sense... Fuck, it hurts...'
Just as the door to Faunahorde opens, Lucas looks directly at Mind Flare with a pleading look.
"Please, just end it."
[Wait, at least take this time to-]
'Don't worry, I have an idea.'

Little character theater:
Jonathan, pacing back and forth: You're gonna be okay, you gotta be okay...
Lucas, absolutely miserable: Seriously, you couldn't do a rollback before ending the chapter? (Coughs up more blood.)
427, in his own form of panic: [I really want to support you, but I'm not very confident when you say you have an idea.]
Author, doing their best end-of-episode narrator voice: Will Mind Flare do it? Will Black Ash Snow finally get screen time? All this and more in the next episode of; Why am I so mean to Lucas?
Mr. Quacks, with concern: Quack?
"What!? No no no, there's gotta be a healer right? You know where there's a healer near here, right!?" With his eyes ringed in red, Jonathan's voice cracks as it raises in pitch towards the end of asking Mind Flare this. While Jonathan had originally been near Lucas on the side of the truck opposite Mind Flare, he had dashed over at full speed and is now face to face with him. Or at least, as close as he can be, considering their height difference.'This is pretty painful to watch, even if I know it's not going to be the end result... But seriously, not now Jon. You're not helping, urg.'[Well, he certainly gets full marks for intent.]While Mind Flare had a bit of a thoughtful look on his face when Lucas made his request, it has softened into genuine pity as
Understanding how selective Lucas is with his hostility, Jonathan briefly recalls how he had previously used similar wording regarding the two men he threw onto the subway tracks. Also, the strange sharp gasp he made shortly beforehand. Making this connection, he doesn't question further and does actually go over to attempt to open the driver's side door, the angrily yelling man inside warily watching him through the window.Unfortunately, Jonathan's strength proves insufficient to open the door thanks to the way the metal has warped from the collision. As Jonathan continues to struggle with the bent metal, Lucas has coughed a few more times and walks over, choking back any expressions pertaining to the miserable state of his arms.Mind Flare and Josephine have also finally finished making their way over.
As Wraith Hunter continues speaking with the super-villains present, Lucas's attention is still on Mikah. Watching him closely, Lucas is trying to gauge if he heard anything incriminating from his location at the far end of the crosswalk.Beside him, Jonathan makes a quiet startled noise and jumps slightly, then looks up at Lucas wide-eyed. He goes to reach up and touch his arm, then catches himself just before he does so, instead, he starts tugging on the edge of his shirt to get his attention.Off to the side, largely ignored, Black Ash Snow is half watching the interaction between Lucas and Jonathan, but it's more out of general disinterest in the conversation that is happening rather than any real focus. While he's curious about what happened and why the truck is clearly aimed at his store, he's far too awkward to interje
Being predominantly unfazed by the projectile truck parts, Mind Flare and Josephine are both standing nearby. They're busy chuckling at the driver shoved down into the street, serving as a cushion for Lucas. An equally amused Jonathan is also nearby, although he is busy trying to think of a reason to go looking for Wraith Hunter."An acquaintance of yours?" Mind Flare can't help asking Lucas in a voice full of good humor."Nah, but I saw the way he was driving this way. I mean come on, think of the puppies. The nerve, seriously." Lucas shifts his position so he's now sitting cross-legged and tilts his head a bit. While bearing a raised brow, he looks up at Mind Flare. "Think he's got something against Black Ash Snow?"The driver yells something incoherent into the crus
[Incoming. Bzzt...]Wraith Hunter, Mark, and Josephine all fall into an incredibly similar conversation loop as the last cycle. As this is going on, Mikah has begun making his way outside. One main difference, well, apart from Lucas and Jonathan's differences, is that Dan actually got included. Feeling less awkward this time, even with the bird nesting on top of his head, he tries to get more information out of Lucas."Well, I guess I owe you a thank you. I'm sure you know who I am, but I fear it isn't mutual?" As Dan cautiously ventures into the terrifying realm of starting a conversation with a human, Mark can't help paying a bit of attention to their interaction. It's not every day he gets to see his antisocial friend start up small talk with an impulsive goof and a
Now wielding a small rectangle of simultaneously dangerous yet valuable cardboard, Lucas and Jonathan finally manage to break away from the congregation of supervillains. Supervillains who are still hanging out in the middle of the road next to the truck, continuing to divert traffic. Mark has even posted some selfies to his Mind Flare social media accounts while posing in front of Franz pinning down the imprisoned driver. All while also tagging Black Ash Snow's accounts as well, of course.Lucas doesn't even need to wonder when he's far enough away from Mikah.[What the HELL Lucas!? You know we need to onboard Jonathan! You saw how much of a threat being careless around those supervillains can be! Why would you just casually give your plans to Mikah like that!? Now you are socially obliged to let all of those supervillains k
Despite Lucas's paranoid suspicions, the rest of the subway ride continues to be uneventful. Throughout the journey, both he and Jonathan have happily eaten a borderline alarming quantity of food each. Even still, they have some leftovers that they're intending on bringing back to the apartment with them. Now that Jonathan has appeased his localized black hole, the look of contentment on his face is the very definition of the phrase 'the cat that got the cream.' And much like said proverbial cat full of cream, he's on the brink of a food coma.Feeling the distinct need to be a spoilsport, Lucas occasionally elbows him to keep him awake. Even despite Lucas's insistence on being a wet blanket, they're both in rather high spirits. Going home after a busy day will certainly do that, and that thought particularly resonates with Jo
Once Lucas and Jonathan have spent a bit more time earning the stray mutt's trust, Lucas tentatively lifts the gangly mid-sized pup up into a sort of half hug, half carry. The dog not only doesn't resist, but he even takes the initiative to climb up a bit and rest his head in the gap between Lucas's neck and left shoulder.Having been accepted by the animal in his arms, Lucas internally melts a bit before standing back up. Unfortunately, during this process he gets a good strong whiff of eau de wet dog, significantly dampening the heart-warming atmosphere.'Woo doggy, that's some powerful stuff. Poor thing doesn't seem wild, must have been abandoned...'[Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that is no longer the situation.]Latest Chapter Lucas and Jonathan—dressed decently but nowhere near as fancy as yesterday—are most of the way to Cat’s Paw Cafe, pointedly not utilizing the stinky subway station to get there.‘Ya know, it’s been surprisingly peaceful, yeah? Though, not havin’ people gawk as much as yesterday is kinda nice. All that attention was gettin’ old fast.’[Ahem, well, fortunately, Boss System approved my long-term task priority filtering proposal.]‘Oh? Whassat?’[Compared to before, now it requires an opt-in before being bombarded with every single task in range. Before receiving alerts—and therefore penalties for ignoring them—we’ll run the calculations of the tasks’ estimated impact vs. potential unwanted attention. This effectively weeds out a majority of minor tasks—plus some moderate ones—by accounting for how suspicious it would be for you to know the event was taking place, let alone be believably compelled to interfere. I knew there was no need to ask if you were interested in activating it immedi Once the allotted thirty minutes have passed—precisely down to the second—427 tentatively undeafens Lucas. At first, all he can hear is a booklet’s pages being flipped through, followed by Lucas grumbling.Hesitantly removing the remaining sensory suppressions one at a time, 427 nearly sighs with relief upon discovering that Lucas is standing in the kitchenette by the new automatic drip coffee maker—thankfully dressed—in the midst of poorly attempting to demystify its instruction manual.‘How the hell is this so complicated?’[Ah, making good on your promise to Jonathan?]‘Oh, thank fuck; yer back. Took ya long enough.’[…Hello, again, to you, too.]‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. Welcome back. So, anywho, can ya scan through this or somethin’ and tell me how to use it?’[…I already looked up the instructions from everything’s model numbers earlier. First, measure out—]427 guides Lucas through measuring and grinding a serving’s worth of coffee beans and setting it up in the machine with such in-d For a few peaceful minutes, Lucas delights in demolishing the delicious delicatessen delivery. As Jonathan reaches for his coffee cup to gauge if it’s cool enough for a sane person to drink, he ends up cutting himself off with a yawn, earning a side-eye from Lucas.“Hey, ya barely got any sleep, yeah? Instead of havin’ caffeine, shouldn’t ya go take a nap?” Upon Lucas’s question, Jonathan pauses, looking at the contents of his mug with an obvious longing. “I’ll make ya a fresh one in like half an hour; I’m sure 427 can figure out howta use whatever newfangled machine ya got,” Lucas continues, his eyes also fixed on the beverage.[…I suppose I appreciate your vote of confidence.]Jonathan’s gaze lingers on the coveted coffee for a moment before he sets it back on the table. As soon as he lets go of it, Lucas lays his claim upon it.“Um, o-okay, yeah. I just, um, sh-should take a shower first,” Jonathan stammers as he stands.Lucas hums an agreement around a mouthful of coffee.[Did y Thankfully, there are no further interruptions during the rest of this round of deliveries. Or even during the next one, either.Once Jonathan finally has the fourth and final load of freight, he makes a detour to a delicatessen. More specifically, the one where he previously purchased yesterday’s breakfast. After equally uneventfully acquiring milk, third breakfast for himself, and first breakfast for Lucas—since he’d totally only eat sugary baked goods if real food wasn’t conveniently available—he makes his way home. With his back to the recently re-locked front door, Jonathan reclaims the last armload of supplies as he looks at Lucas’s still-shut bedroom door.‘…Our food will still be too hot to eat for a little while; I’ll make some coffee first.’Jonathan may or may not be making up excuses to keep putting off waking up Lucas in the hopes that he’ll do so on his own, knowing full well that he probably won’t.While taking longer than necessary to decide which appliance to christen “Ah! Um…” Jonathan’s face scrunches up a bit as he looks over his pending purchases.‘Can we at least turn off tasks while my hands are full? I really don’t want to drop everything and have it get broken or stolen by the time I get back to it… It will be annoying enough having to run back and forth a bunch.’[Requesting temporary task suppression… Permission granted; disregarding minor tasks for one hour at no penalty, effective immediately.]Jonathan barely represses his urge to sigh with relief. Before Ji Soo works up the nerve to express concern over Jonathan’s vacant stare at the wall behind the service bot, Jonathan’s attention returns to reality and redirects to said bot.“Um, c-could you hold some of it for a few minutes once I’m done paying? I-I won’t take long… Like, five minutes?” Before fidgety Jonathan even finishes asking his question, the bot is already nodding.“Certainly. Do you wish to use a private scanning kiosk to complete your order?”‘I’m surprised it’s even an Jonathan, however, doesn’t hear the utterance of recognition. Unaware, he continues his quest for a coffee maker.A short time later, Jonathan stands--while quietly grumbling--before a row of two-in-one coffee/espresso machines.Behind him is a sea of drip coffee machines, with cold press equipment further off to the side. Alongside the arrangement of two-in-ones sits a selection of espresso machines, both automatic and semi-automatic.‘How are there so many!? What even are the differences? Wait, no, don’t answer that. The technical details will probably just be even more confusing.’[Understood.]Although Jonathan notices movement in his peripheral vision, he doesn’t outwardly react to the recent arrival at the end of the aisle. Instead, he pulls out one of the two-in-one machines set at eye level, rotating it so he can read the back of the box.“Ah! Don’t get one of those! That entire line is overpriced trash,” the newcomer blurts out, muffled by the layers of carbon-filter fabric f After the harrowing--see also; totally normal--experience of getting his hair professionally cut, Jonathan blinks a few times as he looks himself over in the mirror. ‘Oh, wow. That’s way better.’ He’s now sporting a long-top, backswept, tapered hairstyle with a rounded back. Given how clearly tense he was throughout the entire cutting process, a trendy skin fade would have fairly obviously been too much for his liking. After giving Jonathan a few moments to make his mental evaluations, one of the hairdresser’s dreadlocks uses a soft-bristle brush to clear away the loose hair clippings around the collar of the barber cape. A few other coils of his hair organize the various tools he used, setting them aside for cleaning. Meanwhile, he quickly sweeps aside the bulk of the rogue tufts of hair on the ground in a much more conventional hands-on-broom method as he uses the mirror to make eye contact with Jonathan again. “Lookin’ good, mon. Well? Whaddya tink?” His question pulls Jonath Once Jonathan is finally en route to the hairdresser...[Safe distance from Mikah’s power detected. Alert; you have exceeded 10 GDV.
