Chapter 3

Steve Hart was so focused in his phone that he completely missed Callista's shifting expression. Her face had flushed crimson, a surefire indicator of her escalating fury.

Some time ago, Steve Hart had loudly called Callista as a 'jerk'. Just now, he also reflexively snapped at her. Of course, the incident succeeded in making Callista explode with rage.

"You imbecile, what did you just say?!" Callista Categirn exclaimed.

Steve Hart gasped, remembering that Callista was a woman who grew up having everything without having to fight for it. That kind of privilege made Callista intolerant of even the smallest affront.

"What do you think you'll do if I actually harm your mother, you imbecile?! And even if I do, what could you possibly do about it?!" shouted Callista, her emotions reaching a boiling point.

Steve Hart was about to retort when Callista abruptly retrieved her phone from her pocket. It seemed she was making a call, summoning someone to come over.

Within moments, several nurses hurriedly entered the room, paying their respects to Callista, the hospital's head.

"Miss Callista, what brings us here upon your request?" one of them inquired.

Callista Cattegirn pointed at Steve's mother and commanded, "Remove that unkempt old woman from here. I don't want her tarnishing my hospital."

Though taken aback by the order, the nurses complied because it was Callista's directive, despite their surprise.

"Stop it, don't do this, or you'll regret it!" Steve Hart exclaimed.

Standing staunchly by his mother's side, Steve aimed a sharp gaze at the nurses, trying to prevent any further action.

Bewildered, the nurses stood frozen, uncertain of their next move.

Callista Cattegirn smirked sarcastically. "Still unaware of your position, imbecile?" she taunted.

Steve Hart clenched his fists tightly, longing to lash out at Callista, yet unable to do so.

"This is the disparity between us. Instead of testing my patience like this, you should be more aware and act accordingly," Callista continued.

Steve Hart, with an intense stare, rebuked, "Just because I'm poor, you think you can treat me like garbage? Furthermore, I've been covering my mother's hospital bills. How can you, as the hospital's head, so readily dismiss my mother?"

Callista Cattegirn chuckled upon hearing this, then spat, "Of course I can. Do you think I'm unaware that it's Agatha who's been covering all your mother's hospital expenses? Damn fool!"

Steve Hart's expression darkened instantly. This revelation meant Callista could indeed expel his mother using that excuse, and none of his wife's family would oppose it.

"Why? Are you now more aware of how pathetic your life is? It's pitiful, having to beg Agatha to cover hospital bills that should have been your responsibility," Callista mocked.

Steve Hart struggled to contain his boiling emotions. He never begged as Callista claimed, but he had no rebuttal.

"What are you waiting for? Get this old woman out of my hospital," Callista commanded the nurses.

"Stop! If this is all about money, then I'll pay!" Steve Hart's voice boomed.

Steve's declaration halted the nurses, who turned their gaze back to Callista, awaiting her next command.

"What are you waiting for? Just follow my orders. Do you seriously think someone like him has that much money?" Callista Cattegirn spoke casually.

Steve Hart wanted to retort but remembered his frail mother lying on the bed.

"Let's go to the receptionist; let's see if I actually have the money or not. Let me prove my word to you," Steve Hart said softly, not wanting to disturb his mother further.

Callista Cattegirn raised her eyebrows, curious whether Steve's words were true or mere bluster, eventually agreeing to accompany him.

"Let's proceed, but with a condition," said Callista Cattegirn, not willing to let Steve off easily.

"Tell me the condition," Steve Hart responded.

"Your mother must leave if you can't pay as you claim."

Steve Hart nodded before questioning, "And if I can pay?"

Callista Cattegirn smirked, confident it wasn't possible, and allowed Steve to state what he'd do.

"I ask you to kneel and apologize for your unwarranted actions. Do you object?" asked Steve Hart.

"Not at all, as you wish!" Callista Cattegirn replied with a mocking smile.

They descended to the hospital's reception desk. Callista's arrival prompted the employees to pause their work and greet her.

"Pay me no mind; continue your work and refrain from disturbing my leisure," Callista instructed her staff.

The employees nodded, reluctant to question or interrupt her 'leisure'. They were more concerned about their positions and didn't want to incite Callista's anger.

‘Is harassing me and wanting to harm my mother how you amuse yourself? Let's see if you'll find similar amusement when kneeling in front of me,’ Steve Hart muttered in response to Callista's words, feeling offended.

"Miss Callista, is there anything I can assist you with?" asked the receptionist as Callista and Steve approached.

"This imbecile wants to pay for his mother's hospital bills; assist him," Callista stated, crossing her arms.

"Sir, can you provide the patient's name?" the receptionist inquired.

"Adaline Hart."

"You visited her recently, correct?"

"Yes."

The receptionist checked the hospital expenses for Mrs. Adaline on her computer. Soon after, she said, "I apologize, sir. All of Mrs. Adaline's hospital bills have already been settled."

Steve, expecting this, glanced at Callista, who seemed unsatisfied with the situation.

"What are you proud of? It's all Agatha's money. If you're just trying to show off, prepare to relocate your mother," Callista Cattegirn said, sounding annoyed.

Steve Hart had predicted Callista’s respond, but he believed that Callista didn’t even predict to what will he do.

Steve smiled to the receptionist. "How about I'll pay all my mom's medical bills again, plus her medical expenses for the next three months, how much is the total?"

Callista laughed playfully at Steve while the receptionist explained that paid bills cannot be double paid for any reason. "However, I can still process your request for the next three months' medical payments, totaling $30,000."

Steve nod his head then typing something from his phone. After a little while, Steve asked the receptionist to check his payment.

"We've received a total of $50,000; this will cover Mrs. Adaline's hospital fees even for the next 5 months," said the receptionist with a little wonder why Steve pay more than she told.

Steve Hart smiled widely before glancing at Callista, who seemed incredulous about the news.

"$50,000? Do you expect me to believe this imbecile has that much money?"

Callista, still unsatisfied, took over the receptionist's computer to verify. Unfortunately for her, the receptionist's statement was accurate.

"How is this possible?" Callista stared blankly at the monitor screen.

Steve Hart briefly smiled before asking, "So, Miss Callista, when will you kneel and apologize to me?"

Callista Cattegirn stared at Steve, wanting to say many things but seemingly unable to articulate them.

"You... damn!" exclaimed Callista before storming off to her office, appearing embarrassed by the situation.

Steve Hart sighed deeply. He never expected someone as arrogant as Callista would kneel before him, and indeed, it never happened. Not yet!

‘Well, her sudden change from arrogance to shame... for some reason, it gives me a warm feeling, ha ha,’ murmured Steve Hart.
