Bill looked stunned for a moment, before he finally came to his senses and recognized the woman who had just called him excitedly and was now in front of him.
"Joana?" Bill murmured doubtfully."I thought you didn't recognize me anymore." The woman said cheerfully as she hugged Bill briefly.Bill was stunned without knowing how to respond. This meeting was too sudden and unexpected for him.Joana was Bill's childhood friend. They were both residents of an orphanage on the outskirts of Arden. However, when they were in junior high school, Joana had to leave the orphanage because she was adopted by a couple from out of town. Joana went with her foster parents, which meant she could no longer be friends with Bill. The two of them really had no communication after that."How are you, Bill? Gosh, I really didn't expect to see you here." Joana chattered again while continuing to show a cheerful smile."Well. I didn't expect to see you again either. I haven't heard from you since you left the orphanage." Bill finally said, still a little stiffly. Of course he felt awkward. Joana's appearance before him now looked very different from the Joana in his memory. She was no longer an innocent little girl with a simple appearance, but had become an elegant and charming mature woman.Hearing Bill's answer, Joana's smile instantly faded and she sighed a little harshly."Yes, that's right, I admit that I just disappeared, but everything is not without reason. It's a long story." Joana said."By the way, what are you doing here?" Joana's gaze then fell on Bill's hand holding the luggage handle. She also realized that her childhood friend's appearance looked a bit messy at the moment."Um, that's ... I was waiting for someone to pick me up." Bill lied. He looked a little self-conscious as Joana scanned his appearance from top to bottom.Joana paused for a moment, seemingly unable to believe what Bill had just said. She was just happy to have accidentally reunited with the childhood friend he missed so much, but it seemed that his friend's condition was not very good.Suddenly Bill's stomach was heard to rattle very loudly, making the man's eyes widen slightly in surprise at the sound of his own stomach. He was really embarrassed and immediately looked the other way to avoid Joana's gaze."Um, Bill, it might be a while before your pickup arrives. While waiting, would you like to join me for lunch?" Joana asked then with a little caution. It was obvious that she didn't want to make Bill feel offended and embarrassed.Bill himself seemed hesitant to accept the offer, although it couldn't be lied to if his stomach was really very hungry at the moment."Come on, we haven't seen each other in a while. Consider it an unplanned reunion." Joana coaxed again.Bill lifted his face to see Joana's current expression. There was no contemptuous look on his friend's face even though Bill was well aware that his current appearance must look very pathetic. Instead, Joana looked very hopeful that Bill would accept her invitation."Come on, Bill, please--" Joana pleaded."Okay." Bill finally nodded and agreed to Joana's invitation. The man then got up from his seat."Let's find a nice, pleasant place to eat. Come on, my car is parked over there." Joana pointed to a fairly luxurious car.Bill followed behind Joana. For the first time in his life, he felt so low and insecure to walk side by side with someone who was his friend."Hurry up a bit, Bill. I'm hungry." Suddenly, Joana turned around and put her arm around Bill.Bill glanced back at Joana. Because he was treated so warmly, he felt warm too. He smiled unconsciously."Your car is nice. You must be rich by now." Bill said as he got into Joana's car.Joana started the engine and chuckled."It's not my car. I just borrowed it for a while." Joana said."Really?" Bill looked incredulous. He was sure that Joana was just trying to be modest with him."Yes, it's a friend's." Joana said again as she drove away."That's very nice of your friend. If he's a guy, he must have a crush on you." Bill muttered.Joana laughed again. She looked so happy."What are you in the mood for?" Joana asked and then changed the subject to cars."Anything." Bill replied. He wasn't in a picky eating situation. Of course he would eat whatever was served to him."I happen to have a restaurant nearby. Would you like to try eating there?" Joana asked again. "I haven't eaten there in a long time.""Yes, you can." Bill said. Eating anything was fine as long as he didn't have to pay for it. He was not a stingy man, but if he had no money at all like now, it seemed like he could only endure the embarrassment of being treated by a woman. Not long after, Joana parked her car in the parking lot of a restaurant. Bill looked out the window for a moment before opening the car door. Inwardly, he was relieved that the restaurant Joana was referring to was relatively simple, not a fancy restaurant as he had previously thought. That meant Joana wouldn't have to spend too much money to pay for their meal later."Come on, Bill." Joana once again put her arm around Bill, before walking into the restaurant.Bill could only surrender. He followed Joana without arguing. It was the same when Joana ordered so much food for the two of them."Oh my God, Bill. I went crazy and forgot I was on a diet. I'll ruin my diet if I eat all this." Joana said with a slight grimace when she saw how many dishes were on their table."Since it's already been ordered, you have to help me finish it, Bill. Otherwise, you're a bad friend." Joana continued.Bill just smiled. It turned out that Joana had not changed even though a lot of time had passed. She still likes to pretend for Bill's sake, just like when she used to pretend that she didn't like candy and chocolate because she wanted to give her candy and chocolate to Bill."Okay. I'll eat them all." Bill finally said. "But you have to remember, I'm only doing that because I don't want you to think of me as a bad friend."Joana chuckled at that. She nodded her head in agreement with Bill's words.Bill and Joana ate in a warm atmosphere. For a moment, Bill forgot about his sad situation. Until then, his eyes fell on the diners who had just entered the restaurant, a man along with a woman who seemed to be walking so intimately.Bill's eyes widened slightly. The woman who was with the male patron was Miranda, the wife who had the heart to kick him out of the house."Thank you, dear." Bill could hear Miranda's words as the man who came with her pulled out a chair for her. The man returned Miranda's words by gently kissing her cheek.Bill's blood instantly boiled. Before, he never thought that Miranda kicked him out because of another man. He thought she was just tired of the situation."Is that so, Miranda? All this time, it turns out you've been cheating on me? What you said you were tired of was just your excuse, huh?" Bill muttered angrily with a hardened jaw.Bill downed a glass of water, trying to quell the anger that was now flaring up inside him. He realized that he shouldn't get carried away because he saw Miranda with another man after kicking her out. Not only because Joana was present, but also because they were in a public place. Bill didn't want to make a scene that would get Joana into trouble."Are you okay, Bill?" Joana asked when she saw the change in Bill's face."Ah, yes. I'm fine," Bill said as he forced himself to smile at Joana.Joana smiled back and continued eating. She didn't ask any more questions, but in her heart she knew that something was wrong with Bill.Bill also tried not to be bothered, but his table and Miranda's table were close enough that he could hear what his wife was talking about with her mistress."So have you kicked out your useless husband, darling?" asked Miranda's affair man in a tone that sounded so sickening to Bill's ears."Yes, I've kicked him out. Now we don't need to have a secret relationsh
Bill was pensive while staring straight ahead with an expression on his face that was hard to describe. After the ruckus he had created at the restaurant earlier, Joana now took him to a quieter place. The two of them were currently sitting on a park bench by the artificial lake in the city of Arden. And since then, Bill had remained silent without saying a word."I'm sorry that you had to witness something you didn't deserve to see." Bill said finally breaking the silence.Joana turned her head and glanced at her friend. It was clear that Bill was devastated."That's not a situation for which you should apologize to me, Bill. I'm the one who should be apologizing. I think, I said a lot of nonsense in front of that woman." Joana said. "No, you saved my pride. I'm very grateful for that." Bill said as he turned to Joana and smiled slightly. A smile that made Joana's heart ache even more."I didn't do anything." Joana said."If it weren't for you, I would have really looked like a lose
Bill was stunned when he saw Joana handing him many bags of groceries. Joana had said she was going shopping, but Bill didn't expect her to buy things for him."What's this, Jo?" asked Bill as he glanced at the contents of the shopping bags. There were new shoes, belts, and clothes. There was also an expensive watch and perfume that Bill knew cost more than a thousand dollars."If you want to change your fate, then the first thing you have to do is change your appearance." Joana replied."Really?" Bill still seemed hesitant to accept the items because they were all too luxurious."Have you ever heard the wise man's saying? Good shoes will take you to good places. Good looks will also bring you good fortune." Joana explained."Is that so?" Again Bill looked unconvinced. It was enough that he could eat and drink for free here. If he still received other things too, it really felt like he was shameless."Hey, what are you thinking about to make that expression on your face?" Joana asked
"Hi, Bill." Joana greeted Bill after not returning to the apartment for two days. She looked so tired, as if she had been working without resting for that period of time. "Just home, Jo? Can I make you some coffee?" Bill asked."If it's not too much trouble for you." Joana said as she flopped onto the sofa.Bill went straight to the kitchen and returned after a while with a cup of hot coffee in his hand."Where have you been for the past two days? I can't reach your contact number either. I'm getting worried and thinking the wrong thing." Bill asked in a worried tone as he placed the coffee he made in front of Joana."I have work to do." Joana replied."You didn't come home for two days?" Bill frowned slightly.Joana nodded and reached for the coffee cup Bill had set down, taking a slow sip."What exactly is your job, Jo? You're not doing anything illegal, are you?" Bill asked without being able to hide his concern. So far, he didn't know what Joana did for a living. Sometimes he fel
After leaving the registry building, Joana didn't want to go straight home. She drove Bill to a place that turned out to be an amusement park."Are you serious about coming here?" Bill asked with some surprise."Yes. You remember when we were kids, we often wanted to go to amusement parks, but we never did." Joana said.Bill was silent for a moment. Memories of their childhood in the orphanage flashed through his head, like a movie playing back."But weren't you adopted by a well-established family after that? There's no way your foster parents never took you to an amusement park, right?" Bill asked."Of course they did. But it would have been different without you," Joana said."You speak as if I were your soul mate, Jo." Bill said.A crunchy laugh immediately came out of Joana's mouth."That's true, too. People who hear it can misunderstand." Joana confirmed with a chuckle. "Never mind, let's go and have fun!"Joana got out of the car excitedly. Bill couldn't help but follow his fri
Bill and Joana's walk that day ended with them having dinner together at a simple roadside restaurant. This time, they both ate a Chinese dish, soup dumplings with special spices."That was really fun. Before, I thought my week-long leave would be very boring, but luckily I met you. Thanks to you, I got to do a lot of interesting things," Joana said as she munched on her dumplings."Is coming to the registry office also on that list of interesting things?" asked Bill."Hahaha... it could be." Joana replied casually."Didn't you say you were going to tell me about your life after adoption? I'd like to know why you never showed up at the orphanage once, when you promised me and the caretaker that you'd visit often."Joana paused for a moment, then quickly finished her food in silence. Bill who saw the change in his friend's face became a little uncomfortable. He felt like he had said the wrong thing."Finish your food first. Before I tell you, I want to take you somewhere." Joana finall
"I don't think I can live in your apartment anymore, Jo. I've caused you too much trouble." That night Bill expressed his desire to move out of Joana's apartment. It had been almost a month since Bill joined Zigga Company. He had learned so much. Joana had even trusted him to be in charge of the planning department. It felt very uncomfortable to continue living with his friend. Especially since they were of different genders."I don't feel inconvenienced, though. Let's just say we're housemates." Joana responded casually."I still have to find another place to live." Bill insisted."Why, you're not comfortable living with me?" Joana asked."It's not like that. I'm perfectly comfortable living here. I don't have to think about rent, electricity bills, water bills. I don't even have to think about spending money.""What did you say? Why do I feel used?" Joana gave Bill an annoyed glance.Bill responded with a light laugh. He deliberately said that so Joana wouldn't hold back any longer.
This weekend Bill didn't accept Lee's invitation to go somewhere because he had his own plans. He also wondered why one of his coworkers always asked to be accompanied by him if he wanted to go out. Ronie said that Lee had a trauma of traveling because he had been attacked suddenly while visiting a relative. Maybe Lee feels safe when accompanied by Bill because Bill is quite big and tall, so Lee's subconscious says Bill can protect him.Bill wanted to move out of Joana's apartment as soon as possible, which was why he had taken the time off to renovate the room on the roof of Zigga's dormitory. He had arrived early in the morning with some carpentry tools. He also bought a few cans of paint to make the roof look brighter."Hi, Bill." Ginna appeared and greeted Bill who was scanning his surroundings."Oh, hi." Bill said."I heard you said you wanted to live here. Is that true?" Ginna asked as she sat down on a worn-out bench."Yeah. I don't have enough money to rent a comfortable place,
