Chapter 8: Independence as a fish

“…”

“…”

“…..”

The battlefield became quiet.

Yet, 2 Salmon Fish refused to come out of their hole.

Inside that hole, they stayed as silent as a mouse in the presence of a cat, their gills working on overdrive as they kept on breathing heavily.

Brother?

This guy was traumatized by this encounter.

Eliot?

He was too shocked to move.

‘Holy f*cking sh*t!’

‘What in the name of all f*cking midgets did I just see?!’ He felt like he was going crazy, he fought had to prevent himself from screaming in disbelief.

‘A sea snake that is able to control it’s venom to form a shield?’

‘Damn…, that’s straight out of an anime!’

‘I always knew Piranhas are some aggressive mother*ckers, but bruh…, all those red mists, those Spartan Rage sh*t, that’s crazy man!’

‘Those guys are no longer Piranhas; those guys are f*cking Chihuahuas!’

‘Then, that last boss that seemed straight out of a 90s action movie’.

‘Damn, that Electric Eel was completely electric man!’

‘That blue electric blast, I almost felt like it would fry me too man, that’s so crazy damn! Was that magic?’

Eliot had no other explanation for everything that he just saw and it left him feeling even crazier. ‘Magic is real in this world?!’

‘Damn! I should have known!’

‘If reincarnation and infinite evolution is real, why can’t magic?’

Eliot turned to look at brother the next moment as he whispered. “Brother, do you have any idea how those guys were able to fight like that?”

“…” Brother turned to look at Eliot with traumatized eyes.

“Bonkers!” That was all he could say.

Eliot felt pity seeing the look on this fish’s face, if he had a hand, he would pat him on the head. “Sorry man, that must have been really traumatizing”.

10 minutes later, the 2 Salmon Fish were still inside the hole.

By now, Eliot was already thinking about a lot of things.

He had been thinking a lot about this incredible encounter and he came to one conclusion after everything.

‘I want magic!’

He had only spent a few days in this world and during that time, he already experienced near-death encounters but today’s own was surely the closest he ever came to death. If their hole was discovered during the clash, he was dying 100%.

Eliot did not want to die; he was scared of it even.

‘I need to become strong fast, that’s the only way for me to survive this world, is this like some secret test from Professor Gagam?’

‘I really wish I can meet him now man’.

‘He’ll know what the f*ck is going on here’.

Eliot took a few more minutes to calm down. By now, brother also already started recovering from his trauma though he still looked shocked.

Eliot finally started thinking of the next step.

‘Staying together with the school is the best way to survive as a Salmon for now, I need to reunite with them’.

But he grimaced. ‘I have no idea where they are’.

‘Besides, after that attack, how many fish survived?’

Thinking about chief and how he abandoned all the fish without remorse, Eliot could feel rage bubbling in his chest, he took breaths through his gill to calm down before looking ahead out of his hole.

He spoke without turning to look at brother. “We need to leave here”.

“We need to reunite with our brothers”.

This purple Salmon fish just looked up at him.

After this near-death encounter, brother recognized that he survived only because of Eliot and instantly, his view of this stupid brother changed.

He no longer saw him as stupid; he now saw him as a reliable big brother.

Brother nodded rapidly.

10 minutes later…

Ruffle! Ruffle!

The tiny brown leaves covering a hole shook softly as 2 Salmon Fish finally got the courage to come out of their hole.

“Damn! Don’t just follow me”. Eliot lamented.

“Do like I told you to. Turn your back to me, watch the back and I’ll watch our front, do it now!” He ordered in a muffled tone.

“Yes, big bro Eliot! Bonkers!” Brother responded instantly.

They both heaved sighs of reliefs, there was no other predator.

Carefully, Eliot led the way even as brother kept on watching their back as they swam in the general direction where chief and the school fish escaped in.

Hours later…

[You have discovered a school of Atlantic Herring!]

Somewhere in this water body, a school of Atlantic herring casually swam across as unknown to them, 2 Salmon Fish hid in the dirt underneath them.

“Remember the plan”. Eliot whispered to brother.

“We come out once, we startle them and make them think there’s a school”.

“As they scatter in panic, we grab 1 herring each, got it?”

Brother had a serious look on his face at this moment which only made him look cute before Eliot. “Yes, big bro Eliot. Bonkers!” He replied.

“Good”.

A few seconds later, this school of Atlantic Herring started swimming above them and on Eliot’s signal, both Salmon suddenly charged out of the dirt.

“Danger!”

“Run!”

The school of Atlantic Herring instantly scattered haphazardly in panic.

[You have activated skill: Bite!]

Calmly, Eliot and brother each bit onto an Atlantic herring as they dragged it down the next moment before ending the life of the poor fish as they devoured them without hesitation, filling their grumbling stomachs.

After eating, they continued their journey under Eliot’s guidance.

This time, since he was more experienced about the dangers of this water body, he was alert as they evaded the predators long before these bad boys spotted them. This way, they were able to keep themselves safe.

A few hours later of swimming and hunting, as the day got dark, Eliot finally got prepared to retreat for the night but not after he preyed on a rainbow smelt.

As soon as Eliot killed this fish and as he devoured it, he felt different.
