It’s been a few days since my tutoring sessions with Ceri started. The first day was an exception since Mr. Lucius threw a celebration. The day after that was when the real tutoring session started. At first, Ceri was all shy and wouldn’t talk to me nor come near me. Considering the nature of what I came to their place to do, it made things a bit difficult for me.
But after I asked her about the problem the next day, she didn’t explain and returned to how she was when I first met her. Maybe she was still trying to get used to the sudden change. I was told by their butler, Steppen, that this is the first time someone was asked to be her tutor. So I can understand her to a certain extent. The tutoring session was a good chance for me to review what I learned and started to enjoy myself. I used to tutor Ivan whenever he got in trouble with his grades, so tutoring another one is but a simple task for me now. While thinking about that, a voice came from behind me and grabbed my shoulder.“That’s strange, it’s a rare sight to see Ren distracted first thing in the morning.”It was Ivan, my best friend. I nearly forgot that we always see each other on the way to school.“You good? You’re not sick, are you?” said Ivan.“Come on. I’m as fit as a fiddle.” I replied, trying to get his hand off my shoulder. When I did that, he changed his approach and put his arm on top of my shoulder instead. And as if to declare his victory, he flashed me a grin. I gave up on the prospect of reasoning with him and just let him do what he wants, for now.“I thought something was up after seeing you distracted like that. But after seeing your usual self just now, I think you’re fine,” said Ivan.“I just told you I’m fine though. Well, there are things that’s bothering me. But it would even be bothersome if I were to tell you so I’ll refrain from doing so. I’ll let your imagination go rampant,” I told him. After telling him that, he clenched my shoulder tightly.“What the? Come on! You can’t say something like that and leave me hanging! That’s cheating!” said Ivan, trying to get something out of me.Fortunately enough, I learned from my mistakes from the past. I did not want to be bothered by him. Knowing his personality, it’s best to keep things from him. This is enough. I can’t imagine what things he will say and do if I ever told him something about what’s going on in my head. “Well, if you don’t tell me then I guess that’s understandable,” said Ivan, finally calming down after yanking me back and forth trying to get something out of me, “I can’t always force you to tell me things all the time, you know?”Wow, this is a rare sight. He’s strangely understanding for the very first time. This requires a celebration. I should poke him a bit just to make sure.“There are things that are best kept hidden from others, even your friends. I think you should know that well. If you continue to act like this, maybe I can tell you about it anytime these days,” I told him.He immediately clenched my shoulder as hard as he could. When I turned to look in his direction, I saw the pained look on his face. It surprised me.“What the hell is with that face? Stop that Ivan, you look pretty ugly!” I told him.“Hey can you blame me?! I can’t act like this all the time! Screw that, I’m interested now so tell me now! Tell me!”And there goes my good impression of him. Ivan really is Ivan to the very end. That part of him might never change, but still, he is a good friend of mine.“Come on, pick up the pace. We’ll be late for class,” I told him as I ran towards our school. Ivan caught up to me in no time by using his power. He used his rollerblades and adjusted his speed to match mine while continually trying to get me to spit out what I had in mind. Unfortunately for him, I haven’t decided to tell him, not yet. We continued to do that until we reached our school. And Ivan is forced to stop using his power before the teachers standing in front of the gates notice him. I was able to get in my classroom safely after Ivan was stopped by the teachers at the gates for wearing his rollerblades to school. Something that he was always stopped at the gates for. He doesn’t learn his lesson. While trying to relax, I saw his face sticking to the glass plane of our window like a creep staring at me. “You better tell me about it later, Ren. You know I’ll pester you if you don’t,” said Ivan. There’s no way I’ll tell you about it if you declare something like that. Shortly after, he left when his own teacher pinched his ears and dragged him to class. Finally, peace. Or so I thought until some of my classmates started talking about the increase of Irregularity Breaks happening all around the city. It is something that should be every citizen’s concern. That’s normal for everyone to worry since a single Irregularity Break can easily decimate the city if left alone. But the increase in Irregularity Breaks all around the city causes great worry. It is a matter of whether or not the Exterminators are able to take care of all of the Irregularity Breaks. Although they have powers at their disposal, they are still humans just like the us. They are bound to feel tired and fatigued which brings in so many concerns for the people who will be affected by the rampaging Irregularity.“They’re all over the news recently.”“What in the world is happening? This is the first time large numbers of Irregularity Breaks occur in just a span of days, it's dangerous!”“I know, right? The number of Irregularity Breaks is unusually high these past few days. I wonder how the Exterminators will be able to take care of them all,”“Right now, the Exterminators are still able to contain the Irregularity Breaks, but what if the numbers rise? What will people like us do?”“If that ever happens then we can kiss our normal lives goodbye. Who knows, maybe someday soon, even our school will have an Irregularity Break.”“Hey, don’t say stuff like that!”“Right! Don’t jinx it!”Just listening to their concerns worries me. After all, they are not the only one that’s going to be affected if that ever happens. We, the poor people in this city will be devastated. My day carried on normally with the constant buzz of the unusual Irregularity Breaks wherever I go. Even in my part-time job, it was the prominent subject of our customers. Despite the tiresome and busy shift, I was able to calm myself through listening to our customers' discussions about the strange situation. Because of that, I was able to understand other people’s thoughts on the matter.“Here, take this. Today’s leftovers is not much but I guess it’s better than nothing, right?” Mr. Kim handed me a plastic bag of leftovers as usual. It weighs lighter compared to the ones I received in the past, even so, I’m still grateful that he still gave me some to bring home.“Go straight home, okay? Things are getting weirder and weirder these days. You don’t want to encounter those things especially at night,” said Mr. Kim.“Thank you very much, Mr. Kim. I will. Please take care of yourself too. You’re living by yourself, after all. If you ever get in trouble or need any help, please don’t hesitate to call my parents!”I waved my hand goodbye and immediately went home to share the leftovers with my parents. And after that was done, I prepared myself to head back to Ceri for the tutoring session.I prepared everything that I deemed necessary for the tutoring sessions tonight. I also prepared a surprise test to check how much she had progressed in her studies. Ceri is a fast learner. Maybe it’s because she used to go to a prestigious school in the past, where there are exceptional students who are trying to compete with each other. So a surprise test like this should be nothing to her, I hope.I hope I'm wrong. The moment I surprised her with the surprise test, she immediately refused to take the test. Saying that she wasn’t ready even after letting her peak at the questions that I have written on the test.“Come on. These questions are within the lessons you’re currently taking.” I told her.“No way. How can there be a test in a tutoring session? This is the first time I’ve heard of this!” said Ceri, adamantly refusing to take the test. Now this is a problem. Shouldn’t tutors try to see the results of their hard work by giving tests? I mean, that’s how teachers do to help them understand their students more, right?I’m in a bind. I did not expect her to be adamant about not taking the test. Does she hate tests so much? While wondering what will make her take the test, I noticed that she would occasionally steal glances at me. When our eyes met, she immediately averted her gaze, pushing out her lips.“Hey, Ceri. Did I perhaps do something you didn’t like? You know you can tell me about it, right?” I told her.If she continues like this, I will not be able to see her progress. And for that, I need to know what I can do to make her take the test. “I don’t know. Go figure that one out yourself,” said Ceri. This is troublesome. She’s even more of a trouble compared to Ivan who’ll take my tutoring sessions seriously despite his lack of interest in his studies. I don’t really understand her at all. Since it’s come to this, I have no other choice.“Fine. I will give you 10 minutes to review our lessons. I gave you the notes, remember? I will give you time,” I told her.“What? I said I’m not taking the test whether or not you gave me time to study,” said Ceri, still adamant on not taking the test.I gave her a frustrated look and cleared my throat. I know this may not be enough to entice her to take the test but I will still take my chances. “If you take this test, I will listen to one of your request as long as it’s within the scope of my abilities,”The moment I spoke those words, I could feel her gaze digging right into my skin as if she’s trying to bore a hole in my body. To give her insurance, I handed her an ‘Anything-you-request ticket’ which she immediately took from my hands like a hawk.“.......”“Anything I want, huh? Are you sure about this?” she asked.I nodded my head in response, but I was not through yet.“Of course, but you need to make sure that you passed my test first. Otherwise that ticket will be void.”I told her.Her expression immediately turned sour right in front of my eyes. I mean, that should be obvious, right? In order to get something, she needs to pass my test first.“How sly. Saying that after I took the ticket,” said Ceri, while pouting.“Hey now, it should have been obvious that you need to pass, right? And besides, I’m even giving you the time to review. That’s already a huge handicap for me,” She looked at me seriously for the first time tonight and let out a sigh. “Fine. But don’t regret it later,” said Ceri.Ceri immediately opened the notes I gave her but before she could start her review, she gave me a sharp glance, as if telling me to get out for a while.“What?” I asked,“Can you please get out for now? I want to focus,” said Ceri.‘Say what? Focus? What does it have to do with me? Am I a distraction?’ I want to utter those words. But since this is a chance to make her take the test, I complied with her demand and stepped out of her room. Now that I’m outside, the lobby outside her room is silent. It’s like we are the only ones on this floor. Strangely enough, the silence gave me a sense of relief. As I was drowning myself in the serenity of the atmosphere, I heard sets of footsteps coming from the stairs that connected all the other floors. It was so silent that their footsteps were ringing in my eyes loudly. And aside from that, their voices were crystal clear.“This is troublesome. This unusual Irregularity Breaks is so much of a pain!”“Lower your voice. What if the others hear you?”“So what? Even they can figure that out themselves!”It was two people, and it seems like they are using the stairs to climb up to the higher floors. There was no need for me to hide since the door to Ceri’s room is concealed behind a large pillar. I can barely see them and they can barely see me. So in the end, I just listened to them to learn their thoughts about the current situation.“Everyone knows that. This is why this investigation is vital to figuring out the reason for the unusual Irregularity Breaks.”“I’m not sure about that, are you even certain that vial or drug or whatever has any connection to the current situation?”“Are you an idiot? Can’t you see that these vials are always present in every Irregularity Break that our company has handled?”‘Huh? Vial? Drugs? What are they talking about?’ I want to stop them and ask them about that subject but knowing that I eavesdrop on their conversation might spell trouble for me. So I stopped as they finally ascended to the next floor. And not long after, Ceri called me out. The 10 minutes was up and she was ready to take the test. Ceri surprisingly did well on my surprise test, well it’s not a surprise test anymore since I allowed her to review her notes. But still, she managed to pass and that’s enough for me. Ceri told me the possible things that she wanted me to do. While we’re talking, I remembered what I heard earlier. It clouded my mind as I tried to process everything I’ve heard. “If it’s a drug, it must be distributed in secret, right?” I said to myself. It was then that it hit me. ‘In secret’ were the words that made me realize that I may have a lead. After all, I saw something strange, albeit unintentional. I saw Ivan talking to someone in the dead of the night almost a week ago.A few days have passed and I haven’t asked Ivan about his meeting with a shady man in the dead of the night. I tried to bring that topic up, but I couldn’t muster up the courage to do so. Despite us always walking up to school every morning, I find it hard to ask him something personal.Just like today. I’m walking alongside him, but I can’t bring that topic up. It’s just too heavy and the prospect of it being a mistake and ending up straining our friendship scares me.He is one of the few friends I have in school. If I were to lose him because of my curiosity, I’d greatly regret it for the rest of my life. I know it.I let out a frustrated sigh. I saw him looking at me with a serious expression on his face. It wasn’t his usual cheery and enthusiastic face. I seldom see him being serious. And once he shows that face, it will take a while till he reverts back to his usual self.“What? Is there something wrong?” I asked.I can’t be too obvious that something is bothering me. Otherwise,
Ever since Ivan confirmed it, I was not able to get it out of my head. To think that someone was spreading something like that here in the city. That alone is dangerous. If what they talked about was true then the drug or whatever it is has a deep connection to the abnormal appearances of Irregularity Breaks that’s happening all over the city. For now, the Exterminators are still able to contain the Irregularity breaks, but what if it continues to grow in numbers? Will the Exterminators be able to keep up?Now I understand what my fellow classmates were talking about. I also have grown restless. And if this continues, my college life and my hope for graduating college will be at stake.I’ve decided. For the sake of my life, my family’s life, I will do everything I can in my power, though small, I have to do this for me and my parents.I told myself that, I have resolved myself to do that, yet I was immediately hit with the biggest problem.“How can I do that? Will that cost money
It's been a few days ever since Ms. Owen gave me a prescription. I thought it wouldn’t be accepted by the pharmacies since it came from someone who works in our high school, but I was wrong. They easily accepted it without batting an eye, just like when I gave them all the excuses I can think of.This made me wonder if they really needed the prescription at all. Anyway, that made things easier for me. Thanks to Ms. Owen’s prescription, I was able to purchase the cheapest sleeping pill from the nearest pharmacy. To think that they use this kind of trick to make sure they’d dispose of expensive sleeping pills by having the cheap ones needing prescription while the expensive ones do not.“Have you been getting sleep now?”A voice called out to me as I passed by the hallway as I entered the school building. I turned to the direction where the voice came from and saw Ms. Owen’s blinding beauty. For someone looking so perfect, It made me wonder why she’s in a place like this. The way she
While I was conducting my own investigation, the abnormal Irregularity Breaks continued to tear through the city. It is still at the extent where the Exterminators within the city could handle. But who knows how long it will stay that way?Based on what that man said, their stocks are being swept like a wave. That only means that there’s a lot of people that have already got their hands on that drug. It will only be a matter of time until the explosive number of Irregularity Breaks occur. When that happens, this city is done for. With that in mind, I need to figure something out while I still have an opportunity. It was Saturday, so my tutoring session with Ceri was moved after lunch for weekdays. Because her father is also busy with the chaos created by the abnormal Irregularity Breaks, the building where they live has become so hectic. All the people who have been standing idle the first time I visited this place are nowhere to be seen. Leaving only a handful of guards for the
Two days after receiving the drug, I kept my eyes peeled at the news. There is a possibility that I wasn’t the only one whom he met that night. There might be others as well who were planning to buy drugs from him. But after keeping tabs on the news, I got nothing. The only thing left to do is to confirm it myself. It was during my part-time job when the person I asked to meet arrived at the shop. I immediately cleared a table to accommodate that person to the best of my abilities.“Leave things in the shop to me and get down to your business. But you better hurry. I don’t know how long I can hold out without your help!”I nodded my head and thanked Mr. Kim for giving me the opportunity. “You’re quite greedy, Ren. I did not expect you to take advantage of Mr. Kim’s kindness.” said Ceri, while tying her blonde hair. Her presence sticks out like a sore thumb. Aside from her beauty, the aura she exude screams nothing but maj
Although it’s not confirmed yet, the fact that Mr. Lucius’ team called the drug ‘Nightmare Inducing’ is greatly disturbing. The fact that the vials were present in every scene they investigated was almost proof of that claim. No wonder Ceri looked so terrified right after I laid my eyes on her. This is indeed terrifying. If something like a ‘Nightmare Inducing’ drug exists, then we are in a lot of trouble. The statement of that man alone about their stocks selling off fast is disturbing. If that’s indeed the case, then who knows how many people are using those drugs.“This is bad. This is really, really bad,” Ceri rubs her hands and turns to me, “I wasn’t aware that father was dealing with something like this. Ren, if something this big is going on about this city, I can’t even imagine the danger that you’ll be facing.”“I know. I just didn’t expect it to be at this extent.” Ceri, who now managed to calm herself down, reached out to me. “Pleas
Steppen Glaive, a devoted butler of the Sliver family, has always spent his time to serve with his utmost best. Everyday in every hour of the day, has thought of nothing but to satisfy his masters in any way. Most people, especially his subordinates, thought of him as an eccentric person. Because of that, and his lust for his masters’ satisfaction made his subordinates fear him.He calculated everything to bring utmost satisfaction to his masters all the time up until now, but that all changed in an instant. The guards struggle to open the door to Lucuis’ office. They have tried everything but not to an excessive degree knowing that if they did, Lucius will not take their action kindly.Steppen just stared at the guards, unmoving yet observing everything that transpires before him. “How long will this take? If the master is attacked now, we would be all too late.” he said to himself.Steppen knew it was time for him to take action.
The result of continuing Ren’s investigation shook everyone inside the building after reaching the dead end, but they remained hopeful.“Everything connects. From the vials to the mark on the maps where the Irregularity Break occurred.”“It’s not like his information is not right to begin with. It just means that the enemy is good at erasing their tracks. Even the number he provided was thoroughly crafted. Using a dead man’s name, what an incredibly cautious trick to use.”“Looking at these notes, I can’t imagine these are made by a measly high school student from this city. I mean, look! It’s arranged so neatly! And it’s handwritten at that! What if we ask the boss to take that kid under us once he graduates high school? We can’t not have too many hands, right?”“I don’t know if you’re complimenting him or not by calling him ‘measly’. Well, whatever the case, I have to agree that kid is incredible. Not anybody has the guts to do this unless they are willing to bet their lives on it.
‘What the hell is going on?’ Is what I want to ask after suddenly falling into a kind of situation where I don’t even know how to deal with. This is the very first time that I’ve slept in the same room with someone of the opposite sex. And it just had to be Ivan’s cousin of all people. Not only that I don’t know how to act in this particular situation, it’s also thanks to the noises they’re making that makes the atmosphere between me and Elishia awkward. Just listening to the busy duo is putting me on the edge. And it’s not just me, I think Elishia feels the same.I turned to look over to her direction, to the bed. And to my surprise, I saw her staring back at me. I immediately turned around as if I saw nothing. Why was she looking at me? Is she perhaps uncomfortable sleeping in the same room with a man? Yes. That must be the reason why.“Elishia, are you asleep?” I asked, softly. There’s a chance that I was just seeing things. After all, we’re all drowsy earlier. She must have falle
Right after eating, Ivan and Silvia prepared the table in the living room. It was Ren’s first sleepover and since there’s no one to tell them what to do, Ivan prepared everything they needed to have an enjoyable night. The awkward air around Ren and Elishia has finally disappeared and they have become comfortable with each other’s company, good enough to wash the dishes together. “What do you think Ivan is trying to pull?” Elishia wiped the dishes with a dry cloth, “I know I’m his cousin so I should know how his brain operates and I do. But that is before he entered high school,” she turned to him, waiting for his response.“His plans, huh? Ivan can be difficult to figure out sometimes. His mind operates on a rather difficult wavelength, after all. Although I’ve seen some crazy things today, I don’t think he will pull something on the same level.” Ren smiled, surprising Elishia because of his certain level of trust for her cousin.“You trust him that much, huh?” said Elishia.Ren no
Ren steeled himself as he stood outside Ivan's front door. He had a familiar feeling that something similar to earlier was about to happen. So before that happens, Ren hit the doorbell, one he had not done earlier.Just a few seconds later, the door slightly opened, displaying Ivan's cousin's face sticking out between the space of the door and the wall. The moment she realized it was Ren, she opened the door completely, inviting him in. "So it was you. You should've come in without ringing the doorbell." She walked back. Ivan’s cousin was wearing an apron. So it was not far-fetched to think that she was at the very least working in the kitchen before she opened the door. With that in mind, Ren wondered where his friend could be at this hour."I'm sorry that you had to leave the kitchen to open the door for me. I'm just not fond of the idea of barging into someone else's house as if it were mine." Ren smiled awkwardly. She found Ren's excuse rather amusing, and she let out a chuckle.
Ren's worry came true when his mother allowed him to have a sleepover at Ivan's place. Although it compromises her son's security, she wanted him to enjoy his life as a teenager. At first, Ren wasn't convinced. He was sure that they'll all be asleep by the time he comes back from his part-time job. To his surprise, his part-time job is suspended for the time being due to the renovations."Weren't you listening the other day.... wait, you left right after your shift was over." said Mr. Kim, scratching his head. "Business has been good for a while now and a lot of customers have been coming lately. So I figured that I need to expand the shop a little bit to cater many customers at the same time. I know that it will be hard with only a few of us. Don't worry, I will look for other part-timers as well."Ren looked lost for a moment. He did not expect to miss such an important announcement. Ren just decided to come early to his part-time job to get away to get a breather for the time being
It's been a few days since I heard that from The Voice's words but I still can't bring myself to enter that world again. There are still a lot of things that I don't know about. And since I am free to enter it whenever I want compared to the 'tutorial', where I was forced to enter, I didn't even consider entering Paradise. For a long time, I wished for my power to be useful but now that it's working properly, I wish it didn't. The experience I had at that time was just surreal, I thought it was reality. After recalling what happened that time, I realized the injuries I've sustained while fighting that goblin in my dreams is also reflected to me in real life. My muscles were sore and I was hurting all over. That mostly contributed to my hesitation to enter Paradise. Not to mention the new power I acquired from the candy unknowingly. [Amplify] I still can't figure out how to use it. The word itself is easy to understand but the method of harnessing that power is still unknown to me
"How was your first day of school?" my father asked as soon as I got back."It was nice and somewhat new. It's an experience that's completely new to me." I told my father. He smiled and patted my head out of nowhere. It surprised me at first but I didn't mind it. He tends to do that out of nowhere. It's his way of saying 'that's good to hear'."I wasn't expecting you to come to me with that proposal. Surely, it slipped my mind. Your father is thinking about a lot of things nowadays, after all." said father. "Will you be alright?""Yes. The lessons are a little behind compared to the private school here but it's good. The teachers are not slacking off in teaching. The only problem is the students, they don't care about studying at all." I told him."Well, since you're going to the same school as Ren, maybe get to enjoy some competition. For him and you too." I nodded my head. Although I transferred out of a private school after moving here, there wasn't much competition at all. The s
Morning classes had already ended and it was time for lunch. I haven’t recovered from the shock since earlier. Thanks to that throughout the entire time after that, I basically ran on autopilot.Until now, I still can’t believe what I’ve seen earlier. Is something like that even possible?I turned to the person sitting beside me, “Hey, Ivan. Is The Voice capable of lying?”“The Voice? I don’t think The Voice is capable of lying at all. There’s not a single news story about The Voice lying, right? Did something happen?” asked Ivan, stuffing his face with his sandwich.“Not really-”“Wait! Before that! I heard that the transfer student is in your class! What’s more is that people say she was the one from back then!”I thought he understood that it was all a misunderstanding so why is he bringing it up now?“Yes, I guess so. But you know it was all a misunderstanding, right? What’s the point of bringing it up now?” I asked.Ivan surprisingly looked calm compared to his usual demeanor. He’
Morning came and Ren continued on his daily routine. Eating or missing breakfast, taking a shower, and changing to his school uniform. This routine has become his daily routine ever since he started high school to pursue his dreams. But after the unfortunate event, his parents worry that he had succumbed to despair upon missing such an important event.Ren’s mother, worriedly, stares at her son preparing for school. She turned to her husband, who, for the first time had not left for his work early, shared the same expression. Both of them can’t find the right words to comfort their son, despite wanting to. They know whatever they say will never reach his heart after what happened.“What should I do? What is the best thing to do in this situation?” Ren’s mother thought, “He went home last night and locked himself in his room.”Ren’s mother tightly clenched her fist, “For such a thing to happen on such an important day no less, nothing can be more frustra
[Requirements are met!Physique: Mid-LevelAge: 18Near Death Experience: Achieved][The Voyager has met the requirements to enter Paradise][Would you like you enter Pradise?][YES/NO]Ren stared in empty space. Staring at the confusing words floating made him remember the time when he turned 15. It is the time when humans receive their powers from The Voice, a system that communicates to anyone who reach 15 years old. After receiving his power, The Voyager, Ren has not heard The Voice up until now. He is convinced that he had the useless power of all and did not bother himself about it.“What in the world is this? I’m sure I was sleeping a few minutse ago.” said Ren, trying to make out of his current situation. “More importantly, where the hell am I? Did that man abduct me or something?”Beside the floating words in front of him, Ren could not a see anything else. His surrounding is enti
