CHAPTER 2

Jason was twenty years old when he left his father, he was upset that his father was planning on getting married to his ex-girlfriend, Sofia Clark after the death of his mother, Mrs. Samantha Lewis. He couldn't face seeing Sofia as his stepmother, so He left Greensboro and came to Winston-Salem.

Since then he had hated his father, it was at Winston Salem Jason met Jessica's father Mr. Eric Miller. Who took him in and gave him a job at the Pinecrest plantation, he worked for the Miller's plantation farm. since he was good in business, and Mr. Eric saw him as a boy with a bright future. Mr. Eric made him his assistant.

Jason met Jessica while he was working at the plantation and they started loving each other. Mr. Eric decided to get them married even against his wife's decision.

Mr. Eric Miller had plans of making Jason the manager of the Pinecrest Plantation but Mr. Eric Miller died two weeks before the day he was to take over, Mrs. Maria Miller gave it to her son Danny and Jason was left to do some of the house chores.

That evening Mrs. Miller and Danny were seated at the dining table having their meal, but Jessica was not there.

She hardly came back home late except she was working extra hours and even if she did, she would have called Jason to inform him about it.

“Mom, Have Jessica called you. It's almost past nine and she is not back from work,” he asked with concern written on his face.

“Why not call her yourself.” Mrs. Miller retorted.

“I have called her but she is not picking up my calls,” he said.

“Maybe she is busy,”  Danny said.

Jason was still not satisfied with their response, he could sense that something was wrong from the way they were all relaxed.

Mrs. Miller, he knows who has called Jessica to know her whereabouts, or she would have gone out herself to look for Jessica.

“I'm going out to look for her.” He said.

Jason left the house, he took his scooter that was given to him by Mr. Miller and he drove to her office.

Jessica worked at SwiftTransport, he got to the gate of the building it was a 10-minute ride. He met the security man, the security gave Jason an evil look and he frowned in irritation.

“Who are you and what do you want?” He asked, in an authoritative tone.

“I'm here to look for my wife, Jessica Miller,” Jason replied. He looked around the environment from the gate to see if he would see her.

“Sorry, there is nobody in the building, it's the manager's birthday and he ordered everyone to go home before 4 pm. So they could all attend his birthday party.” The security guard said.

Jason was surprised by what he heard. He wondered why Jessica never called to inform him about the birthday or even where she was going.

He pleaded for the security guard to give him the address of the birthday party but the man refused. Jason got angry and rode back home.

On his way home, the scooter stopped and was unable to start again. He tried everything to make it start but to no avail. It started raining heavily and he had no other options because it was late he pushed the scooter as he strode home.

He got home and there was still no sign of Jessica, her car was not parked anywhere in the building. He walked inside, soaked from the rain.

Mrs. Miller and her son Danny were both seated on the couch as they were watching TV. The door creaked open as they turned to see who it was.

“Where are you coming from,” Danny asked looking at him from head to toe.

He was shivering from the heavy rain, he replied calmly “I went to Jessica's workplace to look for her and I was told that today is her boss' birthday party. And all the staff have gone there.” he said with his voice barely above a whisper.

Mrs. Miller sighed, Before getting up and walking towards him. “Who told you to go there?” she asked.

“I was worried, I had to go and look for my wife,” he said.

“It's not your fault, I blame my late husband Eric for giving my beautiful daughter to a pauper like you.” Mrs. Miller said.

“But Mr. Eric is your husband and he was also a good man.” before he could close his mouth. A hand hurled across his face, “Tau” She slapped him.

He staggered backward, he could have fallen if not for his strength, the ground was wet from the water dripping down his body.

Jason, held his cheeks as he stared at Mr. Miller before moving his gaze at Danny who was laughing uncontrollably at him.

“Why would you talk to my mother like that, you this live-in son-in-law,” Danny said.

“I have told you, we should send him packing,”  Danny said as he watched his mother scurry towards the drawer close to the TV.

She brought out a big brown envelope and handed it over to Jason, he opened the brown file nervously with his wet hands, he was heartbroken when he saw Jessica's signature and noticed it was a divorce paper. He held the paper tightly as he stared at it. He felt like his heart was stabbed.

He wasn't expecting Jessica to sign the divorce paper, she had been the only person that had been with him after the death of his mother.

His heart was tugging in pain, just then he heard a voice from the stairs case.

“You better leave this house, we don't want a low life like you In our family. Sign it and go away. I want my daughter to marry someone who can take care of her and her family.” Mrs. Miller said.

“I need to see Jessica before signing anything, she would be the person to tell me herself,” Jason uttered with disbelief, his face reddened in anger.

Mrs. Miller was angry, she couldn't believe Jason. She wanted him out of their life by all means.

Jason dropped the file on the dining table and walked towards his room. Mrs. Miller and Danny looked at each other with disappointment.

“Come and clean this place, I wouldn't want to fall,” Danny yelled at him as he walked towards his room.

Jason entered the Bathroom, he still couldn't believe Jessica signed the divorce paper. He allowed the water to cascade down his body, washing away the pain, Shock, and disappointment he was going through.

******

The next morning around seven o'clock Jason heard the sound of a car coming into the house. He knew it was Jessica because Mrs. Miller and Danny were still at home.

He rushes towards the staircase and finds her opening the house door. She looked tired and her hair was tattered.

When Jessica saw him she faced down not wanting to look at his face.

“Where are you coming from?” He asked in anger, he wanted an explanation even if he knew where she went to and why she had not returned last night, why was she coming back this morning?

Jessica looked at him in disguise. Trying to know what gave him the confidence to ask her such a question.

“Who are you talking to?” She retorted.

She was about to pass him and move towards the staircase when he held her hand from behind.

“You haven't answered my question, Jessie,” Jason politely uttered.

Jessica looked at him with anger, “Who are you to ask me such a question,”

Jason was surprised by what he just heard, Jessica had never acted like this before toward him. He noticed she was weak and he offered to assist her so she wouldn't slip. So he tried grabbing her in a bridal style but she refused and she used her bag to hit his head.

Jason looked at her in disbelief and annoyance. Mrs. Miller and Danny stood there watching them, they let out a light giggle.

“Jason, leave me alone.” She said as she staggered her way to the staircase.

Then the door creaked up and they turned to see who it was.
