Kent paced back and forth in the dimly lit warehouse, the musty smell of old machinery filling the air. He glanced at his watch, impatience growing with each passing minute. Since he had been hiding from Anatoly, he hated staying in one spot for too long.

The sound of a car pulling up outside interrupted his thoughts. He straightened, expecting to see Roland’s familiar face. Instead, his heart sank as the warehouse door creaked open, revealing Roland with a look of terror in his eyes. Behind him, Anatoly emerged, a gun pressed firmly against Roland’s back.

“Anatoly” Kent breathed out as he subconsciously backed away.

“Really Rivers? A warehouse? If I knew that you'd be so basic with your hiding place, then I would've found you much sooner." Anatoly laughed as he walked into the warehouse, still trailing Roland with the gun. “Too bad for you; there isn't a hole you could hide in that I wouldn't be able to find.”

“Anatoly, I know that." Kent started struggling to find the words t

Kent and Roland struggled to their feet, wincing from the pain that Anatoly’s attacks caused. Even though the pain from the assault was still fresh, they quickly rose to their feet as they couldn’t afford to waste any more time.Kent rubbed the back of his head, feeling the tender spot where Anatoly had struck him. “That bastard sure loves to make a scene,” he mumbled. “How are you sure that we can get Mr. Harrington on our side?” he asked, his voice tinged with desperation.“It’s obvious. You did a good job getting on his good side these past few weeks. Besides, you should’ve seen him this morning. He’s anxious about the whole situation.” He assured Kent Z. “He’s actually been looking for you." Roland added a lie at the end to boost Kent’s ego. Roland hated Kent’s ego most of the time, but he knew that once it was inflated, he could do almost anything. It was like a superpower of his, and now more than ever, they needed it.Kent’s eyes widened in surprise. “He’s looking for me?” His

Kent left Mr. Harrington’s office grinning from ear to ear and went straight to Roland’s office.“Did he agree?” Roland asked.“Would I be smiling like a fool if he didn’t?” Kent answered. “The meeting will be holding soon, so go and make sure that Victoria is going to be as compliant as she always is.”Roland mirrored Kent’s grin. “That’s good. Very good.” He got up from his seat and walked out of his office and to Victoria’s in record time.Roland opened the door to Victoria’s office and plopped down into the. hair in front of her like he owned the office.Victoria’s eyes narrowed into slits, and she felt a pit form in her stomach. As the shareholders filed out of the meeting room, the tension in the air was palpable. Victoria trailed behind the others, her face flushed with anger. She felt the pit in her stomach grow wider once again. She thought of what Franklin would think of her if he knew what she did.“I’m absolutely pathetic,” she murmured to herself. Now that she thought of it, it was for the best that Amelia wasn’t present during the meeting to see her be weak and vote for Kent once again. She felt like a traitor. Like she was betraying Franklin, betraying Amelia, and betraying Jason. But most of all, she felt as though she was betraying herself. Each time she let Roland do what he pleased and get his way, and each time she did his bidding, she lost a part of herself, and she knew that sooner rather than later, he would pick away at the final piece of herself and leave her with absolutely nothing.A shiver went down her spine at the thought. At that moment all she wanted to do was run away and hide fro

Jason’s heart pounded as the prison van pulled up to the towering gates of the county jail. The metallic clang of the gates closing behind him sent a shiver down his spine. The nostalgia hit him like a bus once they reached the jail. Memories of his first conviction began to flood his mind so vividly that it was like he was living it for the first time. But he reminded himself that it wasn’t like before. Unlike before, now he had a good lawyer and others working on his case. He wasn’t the good-for-nothing son-in-law anymore, and he’d make sure that Stefan and everyone else knew that. He tried to hold on to those things for strength as he was escorted from the van into the processing area. Inside, the fluorescent lights cast a harsh glow on the drab surroundings. Guards stood at every corner, their watchful eyes never missing a movement. Jason was led to the intake counter, where a gruff officer began the routine. “Name?” the officer barked. “Jason Grey,” he replied, his voic

The news felt like a blow straight to his core. But though it was not ideal for Jason that Kent was now president, it didn’t surprise him that Kent took the opportunity.“Of course he is,” Jason scoffed.Amelia’s eyes widened slightly. “You don’t seem surprised.”“Of course, I'm not. Connor sat at the bar, a satisfied grin on his face as he ended the call. "I'll let you know the next steps soon," he said, his voice tinged with excitement. He slipped his phone into his pocket, revelling in the aftermath of his plan. Timothy's coma was a stroke of brilliance, and everything was falling into place.Jake, the bartender, noticed Connor's unusually cheerful demeanour. "You seem awfully happy tonight,” he remarked. “What’s got you so excited about drinking medicine booze in a rundown bar in Queens?" he scoffed, wiping down the counter.Connor chuckled, taking a sip of his drink. "You need to stop being so pessimistic, Jakey; maybe then you’ll be able to have a smile as big as this." Connor flashed Jake a mockingly bright smile. Before Jake could respond, the door swung open, and four men entered. Despite their efforts to blend in with their casual clothing, Connor recognised them instantly: Kent, Roland, and Andrew. They made their way to the private area, their presence

As she made her way to her office, she couldn't shake the unease that had settled in her stomach since Kent's announcement as president the day before.Once inside, she immediately set to work, attempting to log into the company's accounts. I use these passwords all the time; why isn't it working now?" she muttered under her breath, trying again with no luck. Frustration mounting, she slammed her hands on the desk.Suddenly, the door swung open, and Roland strolled in, a smug smile plastered on his face. “Good morning, Amelia dear,” Roland greeted her in a sing-song voice.Seeing Roland in her office was irritating enough, and with the added frustration of the passwords not working, she snapped at him, “What the hell do you want, Roland?”"How cruel,”

He bounced with pride as he walked, excited to share the news of how he humiliated Amelia and claimed his office. He opened the door to Kent’s office and found him engrossed in paperwork."Guess who just claimed his office as Vice President," Roland chuckled.Kent barely glanced up, his expression unreadable. "By the stupid smile on your face, I don’t have to guess; I know it’s you. There’s no time for your gloating right now; there’s much more pressing matters to address."Roland's smirk faded. "Which are?"Kent leaned back in his chair, fixing Roland with a stern gaze. "Drugging the old man. We need him to sign those shares to us soon, so his drugs have to be switched today; and you, Roland, are going to do it."Roland's eyes widened. He knew that Kent would enlist him to handle the hardest part of it, but he didn’t know it would happen so soon.“But how am I-“Kent cut

TWO YEARS LATER For the first time in two years, Jason had come to see his grandfather and mother. He stood before the grave, staring at the name engraved on the marble headstone in bold and grand letters. MICHAEL ALLEN GREY He shifted uncomfortably, his hands buried deep in his pockets. “Hi, Grandpa,” he said, his voice quiet and uncertain. The word still felt foreign to him, but it was starting to feel less so. “Grandpa. It’s getting easier to say that, I think. Every time I come here, it’ll get a little easier.” Jason took a deep breath, looking down at the bouquet of lilies in his hand. “Well, I don’t really know what to say, but Diana advised I should just speak from the heart.” A small smile crept on his lips when he said that. Diana had been so supportive throughout his journey with grief. She was the one that gave him the final push to see his grandfather and mother after he’d avoided it for so long. He didn’t think he’d be able to bear the pain of coming to this

His voice cracked as he followed close behind, gripping her cold hand.“It’s going to be okay, Mom,” Jason whispered, his voice trembling. “Everything’s going to be okay. I promise.”Reuben stood to the side, phone in hand, ensuring every necessary call had been made. The police had taken Connor’s lifeless body, and an ambulance had quickly arrived to transport Abigail. Lana, shaken but safe, had already been returned home.As Abigail disappeared into surgery, Jason remained rooted in place, staring at the doors as if willing them to open and bring her back. His chest heaved with uneven breaths, his hands clenched into fists.“Jason!”The familiar voice jolted him, and he turned just in time to see Diana rushing toward him. Without hesit

The call Jason had made on his way to the warehouse was to Reuben. He instructed him to draft a fake deed and place it in a briefcase along with a gun. He also told Reuben to park nearby, out of sight of Connor, but not to leave completely. Reuben was instructed not to come upstairs to the warehouse, as Jason wasn’t sure what Connor might be capable of. Jason made it clear that Reuben should stay safe and avoid any unnecessary risks.Reuben, of course, took some creative liberties with the document.“Let my mother and daughter go. Now.”Jason’s hand trembled as he pointed the gun at Connor, the weight of the weapon foreign and heavy in his grip. Connor froze, fury burning in his eyes. He slowly reached for his own gun, drawing it with a deliberate, practiced motion. “Or,” he sneered, “I can always shoot you, your mother, and then your daughter. In that order.”Jason didn’t flinch. His tone was like steel. “Try it. See how that goes for you.”“Your hand is literally shaking,” Connor d

Weeks had passed since Lana’s surgery. She had been discharged from the hospital, and to celebrate, Diana threw a small, intimate party. Everyone who had taken the test and waited alongside her for the surgery to finish was invited—except for Christopher, who had quietly exited her life after learning he wasn’t Lana’s father. Christopher sent his regards to Diana and even sent a congratulatory message to Jason, acknowledging his newfound role as a father. The other person who couldn’t be in attendance was Michael. He was still under observation at the hospital, something that worried Jason. The worry for Lana’s health was out of the way, but it was replaced by worry for Connor’s next move. Connor, still being on the loose, gnawed at him daily. Each day without Connor in a prison cell—or, preferably for Jason, buried six feet underground—heightened his fear for his mother’s safety. That week, Jason had finally decided to hire bodyguards for Abigail, wondering why he hadn’t done so soo
