“What a coincidence that we were both in the same mall,” Renee chimed as she walked through the mall with Jason.

Jason smiled at her, but it wasn’t a genuine one. "Yeah, it was,” he said, his mind heavy, thinking of how he would break the news to her.

“If I’m being honest, the reason I came all this way is for this." Renee handed the shopping bag in her hand to Jason.

Jason reached into the bag and pulled out the contents. It was an Edox Delfín watch, one of the most expensive types.

Her eyes glistened with love and admiration as she spoke about it. “It’s an anniversary gift for Bruno and my wedding anniversary. It's coming up soon, and I wanted to do something special for him. All the malls in the city didn’t have this model. He loves the brand; he lost his a few months ago, so I got an even better one for him. Even though he said he couldn’t buy me any gifts because he was saving, I still want to do this for him. We’ve been having a lot of issues lately, and -”

On Jason’s way back, he called Reuben to see if he could help him find Christopher. As Jason returned home, he felt a sense of relief and satisfaction now that Renee knew the truth about Bruno. He expected that the next time he saw Bruno, Bruno would find a way to blame Renee for finding out about him instead of taking accountability for his own actions. But he hoped that now that Renee was getting a divorce, he wouldn’t see Bruno again at all. As he arranged his groceries in their place, he thought of his conversation with Timothy; he couldn’t shake the feeling that he was hiding something and didn’t tell him the whole truth about the Greys. He heaved a sigh as he stared at the box of his mother’s things that he had placed on the table. His eyes darted to the groceries in his hands, which made him realise that he was subconsciously putting off opening the box. Jason shook his head. He made the decision then and there that he had to let go of the fear of what he would discover in h

“Is he dead?” Jason asked. It was the first possibility that came to mind ever since Diana told him that she wasn't able to reach him, "No, he's not dead. Please just come here." Reuben pleaded “Text me the address,” Jason said before hanging up. Before leaving the apartment, he made sure to pick up the small key and place it back in the box, along with the rest of the items. Jason’s phone buzzed with an incoming message. He checked, and he saw that Reuben had sent him the address. The area was in the slums of the city, so Jason decided against taking his car as it may do more harm than good and took a taxi instead. Throughout the drive, he caught himself looking over his shoulder and being extra cautious. “Maybe I should get a bodyguard,” he said to himself, genuinely considering Reuben's idea. He arrived safely at the place. It was a tall building that looked like it was owned by a company, but there was no name or logo on the building. But that wasn't what caught Jason’s atte

The crowd settled down slowly as they heard the men’s words. Jason looked on in suspicion as they spoke.“We are law officials, and we want to take your case with this company to court,” one of the men said. He was tall and lanky. Some of the people, including Jason, were sceptical, while others were already cheering for the men.“What’s in it for you?” one of the members of the crowd said, echoing Jason’s concerns. The man who spoke up was elderly, like most of the people who were scammed.“We just want to see justice served,” the other law official said with a firm voice. He was shorter than the other man but had a commanding stance."Finally, people with a good conscience,” Christopher said, elated. The crowd erupted into a mix of cheers and murmurs about what they would do once their money was retrieved, while Jason continued to observe in silence. The lanky man took a few steps forward; he was now only a few centimeters away from the gate that separated the crowd from them. “But

The two men's eyes darted between themselves and Jason before they burst into laughter, along with the crowd.“Listen, I think it's time you hang up your cape and go home. How do you expect to speak to the person who organised this?” The short man said it in between laughs.“The building is right there, isn't it?” Jason pointed at the building in front of him and said, “Let me in so I can speak to him.”“Do you even know who he is? He will crush you before you even get a word out,” the lanky man said to Jason. Immediately after the words left his mouth, his eyes flashed with regret, knowing he had said too much. Jason noticed the change in his expression and smiled slightly. “What's your name, sir?" Jason asked the man. “Yours too,” he said to the short man. They exchanged curious looks at each other at Jason’s question but answered.“Steven,” the tall, lanky man said.“Mark,” the short man said.“Steven, Mark. Jasón blinked to make sure that what he had just witnessed wasn’t a figment of his imagination. When he opened his eyes, Christopher was still there in front of him. It was real.“You can hurt me instead; just pardon him; he’s not from here, so he doesn’t know about you, Maxwell." Christopher’s voice faltered, and his body trembled as he pleaded on Jason’s behalf.Maxwell stopped in his tracks, and his lips curled into a sinister smile as he took in the sight before him.“You should take a cue from your friend over here and beg,” Maxwell said to Jason.Jason snapped out of the shock that Christopher’s gesture caused and moved Christopher to the side. “What are you doing?” he said to Christopher in a hushed tone.“I’m making sure you don’t get killed, Jas. I know you want us to get our money back, but it’s not worth what Maxwell will do to you,” Christopher replied, his tone genuine.Jason opened his mouth to respond to Christopher, but for the first time, he couldn’t find the words to

“Lick my shoes clean like a dog would,” Maxwell commanded. His words hung in the air as Jason’s mind raced, thinking of what to do. Jason looked over at Christopher, who was trembling with fear, still in the clutches of one of Maxwell’s men.Maxwell clapped his hands twice to get Jason’s attention. “Chop chop. Get to it, dog. If not, I’ll have my men smash you and your saviour’s heads in the wall fifty times.”"No, please, I beg you.” Christopher shrieked “Shut up, imbecile. Don’t beg me. Beg your friend to do as he’s told, or else I’ll make sure you’re both unrecognisable after I’m done.” Maxwell sneered.Christopher bit his tongue. He peered at Jason, who was also looking at him. Christopher was conflicted; he didn’t want to tell Jason to do it because he knew how humiliating it was, but at the same time, he didn’t want them to be hurt.As he looked at Jason with terrified eyes, all he could think of was to mouth a ‘sorry'Jason nodded. He walked closer to the gate that separated him from the crowd and addressed them, “Does Maxwell have a boss?”The people seemed too scared to even respond to him, unsure if his question was rhetorical or not.“Are you people deaf? I asked you a damn question.” He glared at them. “Am I or am I, not the boss around here?”“You are the boss." The crowd chimed in unison, their tones laced with fear.A dark smirk coloured Maxwell’s features as he heard their voices. Maxwell’s eyes darted between Dario and Jason. The smug look that Jason had on his face made him want to erupt like a volcano, but he had a much bigger problem in front of him.His mind reeled as he thought Jason could have possibly contracted Dario, whom he knew was virtually impossible to reach. He doubted that he would get any answers to his questions, though. The crowd was also bewildered. They couldn't believe that Jason actually knew Maxwell's boss, and neither could they believe that Maxwell had a boss. They were now the ones who felt stupid for doubting Jason.“Let them go," Dario said to Maxwell’s men, and immediately the order left his lips; they freed Jason and Christopher.Christopher finally let out the breath he had been holding in since he was grabbed by the man. He looked over at Jason with his eyes full of gratitude and confusion. Like everyone else, he wondered how Jason was able to contact Maxwell’s boss."Dario, please, I can explain,” Maxwell said, his voice barel

TWO YEARS LATER For the first time in two years, Jason had come to see his grandfather and mother. He stood before the grave, staring at the name engraved on the marble headstone in bold and grand letters. MICHAEL ALLEN GREY He shifted uncomfortably, his hands buried deep in his pockets. “Hi, Grandpa,” he said, his voice quiet and uncertain. The word still felt foreign to him, but it was starting to feel less so. “Grandpa. It’s getting easier to say that, I think. Every time I come here, it’ll get a little easier.” Jason took a deep breath, looking down at the bouquet of lilies in his hand. “Well, I don’t really know what to say, but Diana advised I should just speak from the heart.” A small smile crept on his lips when he said that. Diana had been so supportive throughout his journey with grief. She was the one that gave him the final push to see his grandfather and mother after he’d avoided it for so long. He didn’t think he’d be able to bear the pain of coming to this

The stark fluorescent lights of the hospital buzzed faintly as Jason paced outside the emergency room. The air smelt sterile, but Jason’s mind was anything but clear. Paramedics wheeled Abigail through the double doors, her body limp on the stretcher. His voice cracked as he followed close behind, gripping her cold hand.“It’s going to be okay, Mom,” Jason whispered, his voice trembling. “Everything’s going to be okay. I promise.”Reuben stood to the side, phone in hand, ensuring every necessary call had been made. The police had taken Connor’s lifeless body, and an ambulance had quickly arrived to transport Abigail. Lana, shaken but safe, had already been returned home.As Abigail disappeared into surgery, Jason remained rooted in place, staring at the doors as if willing them to open and bring her back. His chest heaved with uneven breaths, his hands clenched into fists.“Jason!”The familiar voice jolted him, and he turned just in time to see Diana rushing toward him. Without hesit

The call Jason had made on his way to the warehouse was to Reuben. He instructed him to draft a fake deed and place it in a briefcase along with a gun. He also told Reuben to park nearby, out of sight of Connor, but not to leave completely. Reuben was instructed not to come upstairs to the warehouse, as Jason wasn’t sure what Connor might be capable of. Jason made it clear that Reuben should stay safe and avoid any unnecessary risks.Reuben, of course, took some creative liberties with the document.“Let my mother and daughter go. Now.”Jason’s hand trembled as he pointed the gun at Connor, the weight of the weapon foreign and heavy in his grip. Connor froze, fury burning in his eyes. He slowly reached for his own gun, drawing it with a deliberate, practiced motion. “Or,” he sneered, “I can always shoot you, your mother, and then your daughter. In that order.”Jason didn’t flinch. His tone was like steel. “Try it. See how that goes for you.”“Your hand is literally shaking,” Connor d

You can give it back.”Jason glared at him. “And you know how to take what doesn’t belong to you. Like a disgusting thief.”Connor shrugged nonchalantly. “I’ve been called worse.” He looked around theatrically. “But I don’t see you with any documents.”“It takes longer than a few minutes to draft that kind of deed, genius,” Jason shot back.Connor’s expression darkened slightly. “But I told you to come with the document. Jason’s heart pounded in his chest as the phone line went dead. He stood frozen for a moment as Connor’s dark words sunk in. His mind raced as he tried to think of a way to fix the situation, then his voice broke the silence.“Motherfucker,” Jason growled under his breath, clenching the phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white. At that moment, Diana rushed back into the room, her face pale, her breath coming in quick, shallow gasps. “Jason, I… I talked to the neighbors. They didn’t see anything except for a man who looked suspicious walking into the neighbourhood, but… they don’t know anything else.” Her voice cracked. “What happened? Where are they?”Jason didn’t even need to answer; his entire body was shaking with frustration and fear. “Diana, calm down. It’s okay. • Chapter 310 - Your life is on their hands

Weeks had passed since Lana’s surgery. She had been discharged from the hospital, and to celebrate, Diana threw a small, intimate party. Everyone who had taken the test and waited alongside her for the surgery to finish was invited—except for Christopher, who had quietly exited her life after learning he wasn’t Lana’s father. Christopher sent his regards to Diana and even sent a congratulatory message to Jason, acknowledging his newfound role as a father. The other person who couldn’t be in attendance was Michael. He was still under observation at the hospital, something that worried Jason. The worry for Lana’s health was out of the way, but it was replaced by worry for Connor’s next move. Connor, still being on the loose, gnawed at him daily. Each day without Connor in a prison cell—or, preferably for Jason, buried six feet underground—heightened his fear for his mother’s safety. That week, Jason had finally decided to hire bodyguards for Abigail, wondering why he hadn’t done so soo

Annette wrung her hands nervously, glancing at the clock on the wall.“Shouldn’t they be done by now?” Annette asked, her voice trembling with worry.Diana placed a steady hand on her shoulder. “Calm down, Mom,” she said softly, though her own heart felt like it was about to beat out of her chest.David, leaning against the far wall, snorted. “Funny for you to say,” he remarked. “I can practically hear your heart pounding from here.” He tried to take a light tone to lighten the mood, but his own voice also shook with worry.Diana opened her mouth to retort but was stopped when Jason, seated a little apart from the group, rose from his chair. He’d agreed to do the surgery as soon as possible. He lay in the hospital bed, a faint but determined smile on his face. The sterile smell of antiseptics filled the room as the IV dripped steadily into his arm, preparing him for the surgery that could save his great-granddaughter’s life. Diana sat nearby, her hands clasped tightly together, her eyes glistening with gratitude and worry. Jason stood to the side, his arms crossed, watching the scene unfold. Looking at him now and comparing him to the vicious business tycoon he saw when he first met him at Grey Enterprises, it was hard to reconcile that it was the same man.He didn’t look as healthy as he first did when he stood at the top of the staircase with the confidence of a god and commanded his employees.
