~Isolation unit, Chicago prison~A boy passed by, carrying a pot of burning incense. His eyes were shut and he still managed to make out his way in the long dark corridor. Another person followed, an elderly man in religious wear. He enclosed his palms in chest as he muttered some things, while walking to the end of the corridor. They were heading to the room at the end.Lewis peeked from the bars, his breathing escalated each time the bizarre people walked by, deep down, he felt like he had a sense of what was going to happen. Then a man who was dressed in a well ironed suit walked into the corridor. He was dressed like a gentleman from the 80's and his hair had been shaved to baldness, no strand of hair could be seen. His shiny bald hair was the only light in the corridor.Lewis gulped nervously as the man walked towards the room. His face was stoic, no expression, no emotion, no fear.Lewis thought, this man was about to be executed, how come he isn't showing any signs of anxiety?
Inside the conference room, about ten exclusive state agents and the forces of the institution occupied the leather seats, surrounding the sleek boardroom table. CEO Connor walked straight to his seat at the head of the table, facing the huge TV mounted on the wall.“I apologize for the delay, it was a bottleneck of traffic outside,” he apologized before sitting down. They simply nodded while some shuffled through the file in front of them.CEO Connor cleared his throat, gaining their attention.“First off, I want to sincerely apologize for the misconduct and the recent attack on one of our officers. I stand by my words, we have filed a lawsuit for the said inmate who caused the mi-” he was interrupted by one of the agents.“I want to know. In the statement submitted by the workers of this correctional institution, it is written down here that there weren't enough cameras installed for the safety of the workers, what do you say about that?” the man sitting in the middle of the left si
~Lewis' hands were cuffed as Warden Lee took him to the interrogation room. He took a seat opposite the interrogation room. Every hope of escaping this prison disappeared into the thin air after the day he was apprehended in the corridor. It has been five days since the horror, and Lewis has not admitted to the crime. He rather remains quiet whenever he is asked about it.Like today, he just sits across from the officer who rested his right elbow on the table, relaxed and confident that he will get a nod to the crime from him.The officer cleared his throat loudly in the quiet room with dark walls. He pinned his eyes on Lewis as if he would steal a thing from him once he moved his eyes, then he picked the water from his office bag and uncapped. Took about three gulps just to refresh himself. He then adjusted his medicated glasses before starting.“You were caught killing this man,” he pushed the picture of the dead inmate to Lewis. “His parole was coming up next month.”“You stabbed
~Court room~Everyone took their seats in the courtroom, while waiting for the judge to arrive. And after thirty more minutes of waiting, a sheen of sweat appeared on their foreheads as they waited. Finally, the judge arrived.“Court stand!” Everyone stood up, hearts were beating, some faces carried no trace of smile, happiness.Only one attorney came up, and they selected their juries.“This is a case of murder,” the chief judge began.“On the tenth of November, Mr. James was stabbed to death by Lewis Baker. It's reported that Mr. Lewis was seen lurking in the middle of the night, he went to the infirmary to receive treatment, allegedly drugged Miss Viviette who works as a nurse and also a correctional officer was found unconscious at exactly 10:40pm when Mr. Lewis was apprehended with a dead body,” he exhaled. The judge who appeared to be sixty in age sighed and looked at the room through his two lenses. Then his eyes fell on the accused “Let's hear from you, Mr. Lewis.”A brief mo
“Officer Lee, can I ask you for a favor?” Officer Viviette walked inside the surveillance room where warden Lee was picking a popcorn while rotating in his reclining chair. His eyes were solemnly fixed on the large monitor and when he realized who had joined, he didn't bother to spare her a glance.“Officer Lee?” Officer Viviette called again when the man didn't respond.Warden Lee snapped his neck sideways, “What?! Why are you fucking calling my name like a dickwad?” Officer Viviette was shocked by his aggravated tone.“Wow, why are you raising your voice at me” she had to ask.The two had different jobs in the prison, and they have never posted them in the same place together and if they walked past each other, there wasn't anything to talk about as they weren't close work colleagues.Warden Lee sized her up with contempt lingering in his eyes.“What the fuck do you want?” Officer Viviette who was still hanging half outside the door and half inside sighed in tiredness. She inser
Inside the infirmary, Officer Viviette couldn't help but feel restless about the current situation. She rested in her office chair while looking at the ceiling. One of her hands is scraping the surface of her desk with the tip of a pen. Why is she having a negative feeling about all these? She suddenly stood up and took her black cap before locking the door behind her. ****~CEO office, Chicago prison~A light knock on the door.“Who is that?” CEO Connor asked from inside.“Officer Viviette, sir.”He sighed, “Come in.”She opened the door and stepped in. Then put on a casual smile.“Any problem, officer Vi?” The man paused writing to give her focus.“No that serious sir. Do you have spare time? I would like to discuss some certain things?” Officer Viviette. There was a brief silence as CEO Connor gave it a quick thought. Then he pointed towards the opposite chair, “Please sit down.”“Thank you,” she sat down with a smile.“What is it that you want to discuss?” CEO Connor dropped hi
Early in the morning, inmates jugged around the courtyard, doing their morning exercise. Lewis has not been allowed contact with the others for a while now so when they saw him handcuffed wrist to ankle, they halted and plastered on the courtyard net to watch him.It was just a normal cool with the sun still hiding behind the clouds and the fog from last night cleared up before dawn. Two police men with assault rifles held Lewis on the elbow as they escorted him to the jail van.Words had gone round since that night, it is widely known that Lewis murdered one of the top inmates and not only would he face the consequences of the law but the inmates were seriously cheering for his death. Some of them picked rocks and tried hurling it outside the net but it was not possible.“Son of a mongrel”“Cut that dickhead limpy!”“I swear, you better don't come back to gen Pop! I will kill you myself!”“Fuck you Baker!”They sounded aggravated. Death was a normal thing in Chicago prison but the in
~Court room, Chicago~After acknowledging the judge, the opening speech was read before the judge commenced his speech.“In today's trial, the murderer of James Yuri will face the law and its judgment. Can the accused stand please?” the judge ordered.Lewis stood up and clasped his hands. “Mr. Lewis Baker you are guilty for murdering James Yuri and therefore, by the power of the law and in the belief of true justice, you are therefore sentenced to death by hanging,” the judge ordered. The crowd muttered among themselves. James' relatives and friends cheered because finally justice was served.“Court adjourned!” The judge knocked the gravel. Then the members stood up in honor for the judge to exit. After that, they started dispersing, leaving the room as they entered. Lewis stood motionless in the accused box. Finally, it happened, he thought. He looked around the room and locked eyes with Duke who was approaching him with an inexpressive face.“Mr. Lewis, it's me again, Duke.”He off
