CHAPTER 20: TESTING RESOLVE

“Now that this is solved, Syndey please help him,” Varrick pleaded as he walked shoulder to shoulder with her.

Sydney let out a loud sigh and halted.

“Hey, Leo boy, follow me,” she said as she slightly glimpsed at him.

Leo gazed at Darwin, who folded his arms, and he nodded positively. Leo hastily walked towards Sydney and followed her.

“I really hope they will be fine,” Varrick thought to himself as he watched them walk away.

As Sydney and Leo walked together, Leo hummed a song.

“Where do you know that song from?” Sydney asked, realizing that it was Abigail’s favorite song.

“SHOOT!” Leo thought. “She can’t know I’m Abigail’s son or else Master Varrick and Master Darwin would kill me before any other person.”

“Well, my two masters normally sing it. That’s how I know it,” he replied to her, flashing a sarcastic smile.

“Alright then. Moving on, what’s your magical affinity?” she questioned, as they walked into an underground garden.

“Woah!” Leo exclaimed.

The globe ceiling, with a little space where sunlight could penetrate through and the multicolored butterflies, which danced around the garden, made Leo’s heart melt.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Sydney said as she stopped walking and crossed her arms, smiling warmly.

“Indeed, it is. But why are we here?” Leo asked, turning back to look at Sydney.

Sydney’s face lightened up, her smile wide as she placed both of her hands by her waist.

“We’re here to brush you up,” she said. “Lotus Coven: Flowery Pit.”

Sydney casted a spell, the ground right in front of them sprung up a giant lotus flower. The flower formed a dip pit at its center, filled with water.

Leo gazed at it, impressed.

“What’s that?” he asked, walking closer to it.

Sydney did not mutter a word. She sneaked up to Leo and pushed him into the pit of water.

“I CAN’T SWIM,” he screamed as he fell into the water.

Sydney chuckled, looking at how frightened he was.

“It won’t swallow you, scardy cat. Just stand in it, it’s not deep but make sure you allow yourself to be emerged in it for a total of one hour,” she spoke, as she turned back to leave. “I’ll be seated at the garden, far off, incase you need me-”

“Wait!” Leo exclaimed, stretching out his arm towards her.

Sydney did not stop, rather she waved him goodbye.

“Why is she this heartless?” he grumbled as he swayed his hand through the water.

“I can’t call this water because it’smell is flowery, it’s almost as thick as milk and it has a disdainful color of red to it,” he said, stamping his feet in the pit.

Leo found the resolve of following Sydney’s orders. He took a deep and he submerged himself in the flowery liquid. As his head entered, he opened his eyes. It was pitch black, and before he knew it, he started hearing voices.

“Help me… destroy him… I can’t breathe,” the voices wailed.

Leo has forgotten that he was submerged in liquid. He needed air but the voices held him. They did not let him go. He tried to resurface but he couldn’t.

“What’s going on here?” he thought and within the water, he mumbled, “Sacred escape: Tomb of fire.”

Although he was still trapped in the liquid, the voices disappeared and the dark surrounding, lightened up. He could also breathe again.

Leo’s mind was fumbled. His thoughts were juggled. He stood in an empty room, plain white. He was alone. He wondered what had happened.

“Did I die? Is this heaven?” he whispered, taking a few steps forward.

Suddenly, a strange figure appeared in a distance. It was undoubtedly familiar.

Leo squinted his eyes, forming goggles with his hand, trying to recognize who it was. The strange figure slowly walked towards him and he did the same.

After a few seconds, Leo paused. His eyes met the person walking towards him.

“Mo-mother?” he stammered, as tears began to gather in his eyes.

“Don’t cry my poor boy,” she said as she approached him and embraced him.

“What are you doing here? How can you be here?” Leo asked, sniffing his nose and pulling away from her embrace.

“You called me out here, Leo. You’ve been wanting to see me,” she said, gazing at him with a warm smile.

“Call you out here? I-I don’t think I… wait?” Leo stammered, taking a step backward.

“Yes, love. I came to pick you up, let’s go,” she said, placing her hand on his shoulder and sliding it down to his palm.

Leo was confused. He did not know what to say as he blindly followed the figure that looked like his mother.

“Wait,” he said, halting and forcefully removing his hand from her grip. “Are you truly my mother?”

Leo questioned, knowing fully well that he might be falling for a trap.

“How can you say that after seeing me? I’m your mother, Leo,” she spoke, smiling maliciously.

Leo did not believe, he began to walk backwards.

“You’re not my mother. Who are you and why are you mocking the dead?” Leo said, traces of anger in his voice.

The sight of a stranger, taking the appearance of his mother aggravated him. He was furious.

The figure, who claimed to be his mother, shape shifted into a figure of Sydney.

“Your resolve is strong,” she said, disappearing into thin air.

After she disappeared, Leo was able to resurface out of the liquid.

He was gasping for air, until Sydney hit his back with a rod.

“Is Abigail actually your mother?” Sydney questioned, as she stared at Leo.

Leo did not know what to say. He gulped hardly at Sydney and did not mutter a word.
