Chapter 19: Leo's resolve

Leo stared at Sydney after he introduced himself. He wandered who she was to Darwin and Varrick.

Syndey casually let go of Varrick and Darwin and walked up to Leo, and held him by his cheeks.

“You’re such a good boy, where are you from?” she asked, rubbing his cheeks with her palms.

Leo tried to reply but he could not because his fondled cheeks was a nuisance.

“Let him be,” Varrick said, removing Sydney’s hands from Leo’s cheeks.

“I’m sorry,” Sydney chuckled, taking a step back from Leo.

Leo let out a great sigh of relief and he glared at Sydney, as he held his cheeks which had turned red. Sydney looked at him with a smile, giving off an innocent aura, which made his annoyance subside.

“He’s a child we found in the woods, and we adopted him and took him as our student,” Darwin said, heading towards the couch to take a seat.

He sat on the comfortable couch and let out a sound of relief.

“This is it,” he said, his mouth widening from side to side.

Sydney could not believe what she heard.

“Wait, you’re trying to tell me that two children adopted another child. Now, who is taking care of who?” she sarcastically asked in disbelieve.

“What do you mean two children? Who are the two children?” Darwin spat, irritated.

“The two of you should stop. We’re not here for all this now,” Varrick said, controlling the tense air. “The reason we are here Sydney is because we need you to reshape Leo, from head to toe. He is applying for admission in Scarlet Magic High School.”

Upon hearing this, Sydney laughed out laughed. She laughed so hard; tears began to prick at the side of her eyes.

“I don’t believe you two. You’ve just cracked the best joke of the century,” she said, cleaning her eyes with her finger.

“We’re serious, Sydney. He needs to learn how to control his magical aura and also discover his true magical affinity,” Varrick said, as he walked over to Darwin and sat by his side.

For some moments, Syndey did not mutter a word. She stared at the three of them and walked out of the common room.

“Where’s she going to?” Darwin asked in surprise, as he quickly stood up and followed her.

“Who is she?” Leo asked Varrick, curiosity got the better of him.

“Syndey was Abigail’s very good friend, before Abigail decided to run away with no traces. She tried her best to look for her but she couldn’t find her. We met her in Scarlet Magic High School and unlike us, Syndey came from a rather wealthy background,” Varrick explained.

“Then, why is she working in a brothel?” Leo responded.

“Something happened to her family after the dethronement and death of the last dragon king, which she is yet to tell us about,” Varrick said, as he stood up from the couch. “I should check on those two.”

Varrick walked out of the common room and into the serving area, where Darwin and Sydney argued.

“Why take an innocent boy, without a legit background, into that hell called a magic school?” she spat, furious.

“He needs it. It’s important to him,” Darwin counterattacked. “Scarlet Magic High School is the only school fitted for someone of his caliber.”

“I still don’t understand why you are hell bent on taking him there. Did you not see what it did to me, to us and most especially Abigail,” she argued, her grip tightened as a frown crawled on her face.

“Calm down, Sydney. The school might have changed. After all the king too chang-”

“Don’t tell me that. Nothing has changed since when Alex became king. By the way, does Leo know why you guys moved to the woods and does he know the dirty secrets that the school is hiding?” Syndey questioned, interrupting Varrick.

“Know what?” Leo suddenly asked, walking into the serving room.

Darwin, Varrick and Sydney turned and they looked at him.

“Why did you come here? Can’t you see that we’re discussing something very important?” Varrick raised his voice.

“I’m sorry. You don’t need to raise your voice at me. I couldn’t stay alone, so I decided to check on you guys and I happened to over hear the conversion. So, what’s this about dirty secrets and living in the woods?” Leo replied, as he walked towards them.

“It’s nothing,” Varrick responded, releasing a sigh.

“I can’t watch you destroy his life this way,” Sydney spoke, walking towards Leo and placing her hand on his shoulder. “I’m sure you want to live a normal life. I don’t want you to go to Scarlet Magic High, it’s ot for you. Why don’t you stay here so that I can teach you about magic?”

Leo glared at her, removing her hand from his shoulder and taking a step back.

“Sorry, but I think I’ll pass. I tried hard to convince them that I wanted to go to Scarlet Magic High School and I’m not obliged to do the same with you,” Leo spoke, confidence lacing throufh his voice. He stared at his palm and instantly gripped it, turning his gaze towards Sydney.

“I have a goal and to achieve that goal, I have to start from here. Nothing can stop me, even you,” he insisted, smiling from ear to ear.

Hearing those words reminded Sydney of Abigial. Abigail had an unbreakable spirit, which led her to the top.

“Fine, fine. If you say so,” she said, as she turned away.

“I hope you achieve your dreams,” she thought to herself, smiling briefly.
