Winnie Carter rested her head on her car and shut her eyes. After a brief illness scare, she was finally returning to the office.

It had nothing to do with the fact her aunt may return any day from now and would use every opportunity she could muster to make her look bad in front of her grandfather.

"Are you strong enough to return to the office?" John, her bodyguard, driver, and friend, asked.

She didn't open her eyes but replied anyway."I've been working from home for a while now. Don't you think it's time I go into the office? Besides, I feel fine." She lied.

Maybe physically, she did feel fine, but her heart was in shambles. There was such a thick mist of confusion in there that she could barely breathe sometimes.

"I've not seen Mr Elijah around lately," John said after a very brief silence.

His tone was highly suggestive, making Winnie's closed lashes flutter. Another reason was the fact he had mentioned one of the culprits who had her deeply confused.

"Why? Didn't know you two a

Elijah found the house empty when he exited his room for water. He looked around the house, but there was no sign of anyone present. He was returning from Tobias' room when Snow strolled in casually."Hey." He stopped dead in his tracks."You're finally up." Snow stopped to chat."I've been up for a while." Elijah continued walking to the living room.Snow, who had come in to do something else, looked longingly at the entrance of Cleo's room. She had promised him a treat if he could deliver on the assignment she gave him. He had delivered and was now ready for his reward.Unfortunately, Elijah was present. He dragged his eyes painfully away from the door and returned to the living room with him."Whatchu up to?" He asked."Brainstorming." He chugged the water down his throat, emptying it.Snow waited until he was done before he spoke again. "Are you still mad at Cleo and Tobias?""Why do you always ask questions?" He frowned, plopping on a chair."Why do you never want to answer my qu

Elijah cracked his brain to find the best possible way to respond. It has to be Tiana, of all people, to answer his call. Where even was Rhonda? His mouth spoke before his brain thought. "Hey, Tiana? You're the one I wanted to speak to."He almost bit his tongue after he said that."Why would I ever want to speak to you? And let's say you wanted to. You could have easily gotten my number, no?" She hissed."True, true. But, I thought it would be better to go through Rhonda." He stuttered."Bullshit! Why won't you leave my family alone? Haven't we helped you enough? At what point do you become embarrassed?" She spat with so much venom that Elijah was ultimately tongue-tied.His toes began to dance on the carpet, anxious as to what to say next. There was no pleasing a woman like Tiana, not when she was hell-bent on not liking you."I have a proposal for you." Again, he spoke without thinking. She broke into a mocking cackle, sounding like a witch out for revenge. Elijah silently cu

"What the fuck is this!" Elijah pulled open his car, and got in.His hands gripped the steering, as he drove off. "Queen of the underworld now?" He muttered to himself, followed by some incoherent jumble. As he drove, mindless of his surrounding, he didn't notice the car behind him. He was about to swerve right, when the car brushed against his, speeding past him. "Oh fuck off!" He cursed, when he saw it was a police car.Coming to an abrupt halt, he waited for them to get to him. A knock on his window pane, had him rolling it down. When he whipped his head to the side, he found two faces he instantly recognized."Mr Elijah?" The very friendly detective Melbourne chirped."Detective Melbourne." He smiled, but it faltered when his eyes went to officer Jack beside him."Elijah." He said in a monotonous voice."Jack." Elijah mirrored his expression."How've you been? Crazy to run into you like this." Melbourne continued in his hyper tone."I'm in trouble again, aren't I?" He a

“What'd you mean, nobody? He almost brushed my car, driving the way he did.” She said.“He's not important. Let's forget him.” Elijah said as his eyes slowly lost the darkness.Cleo did not believe it was just nothing, but by the look of things, he didn't want to speak about it. She decided it was best to drop it.“Okay, I'm here now. What's up?” “Let's go in.” He said, briefly looking towards the road before moving his body forward.“You think this place is getting too exposed?” She asked as they went round the warehouse to the hidden entrance.“I know it is. They won't find the lab immediately, even if they look. We can't be too lazy about it, though. I'll think of an alternative soon.” “Okay.” She nodded as he pressed the buttons, and the door slid open for them to pass through. They made it into the escalator, going down to the lab.As it moved down, they both found solace in their thoughts.Elijah was pissed. “Are we going to get to the point of this ambush, or what?” Winnie directed at Nathan Luxe, who had spent way past an hour beating around the bush.As she did, her eyes went to the large clock directly on the wall facing her.By her calculations, John was supposed to be back so he could be on his way to deliver an important message on her behalf. She had neither heard from them, Aunt. The latter was not a bother. It would be nice if she never had to hear from him.“You're not listening to me.” Nathan countered in an argumentative tone.“Maybe you should explain your stance more clearly. I don't understand a thing either.” Colin, who had been quiet for a while, jumped.Nathan snickered. “This is not the time, Mr Trust. Why are you even here? This is between Winnie and I.” “That's Miss Winnie to you.” He corrected.“No, it's Winnie. She openly disregarded a contract we already had an agreement on. Because of her, I have to push back our annual art exhibition. Do you have any idea how

Elijah arrived at the address John sent him, and his phone rang.“Hey Cleo, an emergency came up. A friend's wife caught the disease and is in critical condition. I'll have to get back to you.” He rushed through an explanation and ended the call.As soon as his feet touched the ground, John hurried to meet him.“You're here.” He said with a hint of relief in his voice.“Any update?” He asked, bringing out the herb he brought with him.“A nurse friend of hers administered saline water just before I called. It worsened the situation.” Elijah's face scrunched. There was only one nurse who could possibly know about the saline water effect. What were the odds it was her?“Okay.” He said as John led the way into the house. He followed behind the big guy as they went into a room.As they stepped in, the nurse was rising to her feet. She turned around, and their gaze met and held briefly.“Hero guy?” She spoke first, breaking the spell.“It was you.” He nodded before looking past her to the

“Leave me alone. Just go away,” Elijah muttered over and over again, as he scraped the walls of his cell with his fingers. It had gotten dark, and everytime it was dark, the voices got louder and more menacing.“Elijah?!” The most off-putting of all the voices sounded. He knew who he belonged to, but he couldn't quite place it. His mind was too disorganised.“Leave me alone,” he begged.“Why? You don't want to be reminded of your sins? I thought you were a self righteous prick!”“I didn't do it,” he shook his head continuously. “I didn't. An accident. She did it. She caused it.”Darius laughed. “But no one that matters knows. In the papers, you're a murderer. You need to see the paper stands, and the news on the city's projector screens. They're all carrying your face and your crime. Maybe you should have publicised your healing abilities. If you had, the, would have been more inclined to support you.” he laughed maniacally.“I'm innocent. The more he tried to keep them away, the more they laughed and mocked him.“Do you know how many people you killed?” Another baritone voice began in a singsong tone.“Not one,” one shrieked.“Not even two,” another thundered.“Not five either,” a third chirped.“So many!” The first voice screamed and broke into a feat of laughter.“No, I didn't mean to. It was a mistake. A setup. Please. Mercy!” He begged, and cried.“No, you did! You put on the ring when you knew how blood thirsty it was. You wanted this. Craved it, because deep down, you're truly a monster!”“No I'm not!” He screamed back.“Yes you are!”“No I'm not!”“Y

They were driving along the highway when Avery turned on the radio and began to sing along to the music being played.“You haven't changed that much,” he said, as she sang.Despite the volume turned all the way up, she could hear him clearly.“It's the curse of being a star, my darling.” She continued singing loudly, pulling a head shake out of his head.He didn't care what she chose to do. The only thing he was happy about was the fact he had managed to get the sixth herb. Despite every setback be had to face, it was just the remaining two left. His thoughts became bothered as he wondered what they were going to be. He assumed if he hadn't seen it yet, it was because of how life threatening they were bound to be.He didn't care though. No matter what it was, he planned on doing it just to see his mother up and about again. She had spent so much time being unconscious, she probably didn't know how the world worked anymore.“Why aren't you singing? Tell me, and I'll do it,” she asked desperately.“Just move, Avery. Move please,” he pleaded.“Okay,” she rose to her feet. “But I'm not moving far away. Just in case you need my help.”He sighed and rose to his feet. She was stubborn, but it was understandable. She just wanted to help.“You listen to me,” he spoke through his bringing the ring to his face. “You're not going to keep doing whatever the fuck you want to do. Elijah drove to a stop in front of the Trusts mansion.“There's a way we can play this off without alerting Colin's boys. But if you want to go the badass route, then we can just walk in.”“What way?” Elijah asked, his trouble sensing tingling.“With your tongue shoved down my throat. They'd think we're in heat and just want to make love. Without any questions asked, they would open the door and let us in.”“No!” He said, immediately she was done.“Okay, Mr God. Chill with the outburst. It was only a suggestion. It's either that, or we go in together. If we do, there's a chance one of them might recognize you and report back to Colin. Are you willing to risk that?”“I'm already here. I don't care if anyone recognizes me or not. All I want to do is get in there, take the herb, and get out.”“You say it like it's that easy,” she said, withdrawing her legs from the dashboard. “Doesn't it take a whole process? Or are you willing to risk the ring working against you?”“The ring feeds on vi

“We will have to return to the exhibition one after the other, though. Just follow my lead,” Winnie said.Elijah blinked multiple times as he tried to wrap his mind around Winnie’s enthusiasm. She had the biggest smile on her face, as if she had been waiting for this day all her life.“Are you ready?” she lifted her head, her gaze darting between Elijah and Avery.“I don’t know what exactly you’re trying to do. But I’m bored and down for anything, so let’s do it.” Avery shrugged. “That’s the spirit!” she pumped her fist, then turned to Elijah. “You?” she asked, eyeing him gently as she waited for his response.“Do I have a choice?”“No!” Both Avery and Winnie screamed in unison.“Fine.” He threw his hands into the air in surrender. They stood aside, as Winnie stomped her foot on the ground twice before storming towards the exhibition room.“It’s not just me, right? She’s really enjoying this.” Elijah observed out loud.“Yeah buddy. You got yourself a show girl. In other words, a dra

Elijah thought about it for all but twenty seconds before he shook his head, rejecting the idea. “No. I absolutely cannot use Winnie that way. If I have to wait until the day of the fundraiser, then so be it.”“Look, I get it. Winnie is special to you. She’s the one you love, or whatever. Regardless, this is your best shot. Colin knows that you’re a god.”“What!” he raised his brow, temporarily startled?“I had to tell him about us, because he pretty much figured out the basics. Anyway, that’s not even the case right now. If you don’t find a way to sneak into the house soon, he’s going to set you up so bad when the time comes, I’m afraid you may not be able to escape the ambush.”He let her words sit in his head for a few minutes. His biggest enemy at the moment was time. By all indications, Colin planned on using the next weekend for his fundraiser. This would make it exactly one week from today. In a way, he could admit Avery was right. He had to move fast if he wanted to thwart C
