Chapter 186

Tobias intuitively stood in front of his phone as his supervisor approached.

“Tobias? Is that you?” The overly tall man with naturally slouched shoulders questioned.

“It's me, sir,” Tobias stuttered a little as he tried to keep his voice at a standard pitch.

At the other end of the line, Elijah grew weary from worry. Worry that Tobias must have done something he wasn't supposed to do. Why else was he acting so nervous?

“But why are you here on your own? You're always supposed to be with your assigned partner in the dark room,” he said, his eyes darting across the room before resting on Tobias again.

“He– he had to opt out last minute. Something else needed his attention,” he explained.

Elijah rolled his eyes. He could tell that was an outright lie. Maybe it was because he had known Tobias for a long time. No wonder he was acting weird.

He did feel a little bit sorry for him, though. In a bid to help him, he got tossed into this problem.
