Selune’s fists clenched at her sides, her knuckles white.
“I have done nothing wrong.”
She tried to play it cool, but her voice trembled with frustration.
Ana’s face flushed with anger. “You… you ungrateful child!” She spluttered.
“After all your father and I did to arrange this perfect marriage for you, this is how you repay us?! Talking back?! Refusing to get married?! What’s happened to you?!”
Ana felt her entire world crumbling. The weight of her sacrifices was unbearable!
Ana had started out as just a waitress, using every trick in the book to marry Selune's father.
But before she could fully enjoy the life of luxury she'd fought so hard for, the Herbert family’s empire began to crumble.
To make matters worse, her husband couldn’t even inherit his own family’s estate!
Now, Selune’s engagement to Ken Wells was supposed to be her ticket out of disgrace.
She had dreamt of luxury, of wealth, of reclaiming her rightful place in society. But her complying daughter seemed determined to ruin everything.
Ana was certain. The real problem was the man standing next to Selune!
Her eyes darted to Arthur, her expression venomous.
“It’s you,” she hissed. “You’ve poisoned her mind, haven’t you? Filling her head with lies and rebellion? You’ve got some nerve showing up here.”
Arthur’s eyes narrowed, scanning the scene with icy clarity. The pieces fell into place.
To this family, Selune wasn’t a person—she was a bargaining chip, a tool to be traded.
And Ken? He was nothing but a trash. The stench of alcohol clung to him, his bloodshot eyes darting around like a cornered animal.
Arthur didn’t need to dig deep to see the truth: Ken Wells wasn’t even close to being worthy of Selune.
Ana turned to Ken, her fake smile plastered on as if trying to sweeten the moment.
“Mr. Wells, let’s not waste time. I’ll take Selune home and make sure she’s kept out of the way until the wedding. No more trouble from her, I promise.”
She waved a hand dismissively toward Arthur. “As for this man… do whatever you want. He’s nothing.”
Ken’s grin widened, his ego inflating under Ana’s words. He stood a little taller, puffing up like a showing off rooster.
“Fine.” he said with a smug drawl, his voice dripping with arrogance. His gaze shifted to Selune, and his expression turned dark.
“I’m not marrying some used-up woman, but if Selune treats me well tonight... we’ll call it even.”
His smirk twisted into something cruel. Turning to Arthur, he sneered, “As for you… get on your knees and beg for forgiveness. Maybe then I’ll consider letting you go.”
Ana nodded eagerly, her desperation plain as she tried to appease him. “Of course, Mr. Wells, you’re so generous. Selune is lucky to have someone like you.”
In her mind, the most important thing now was to calm Ken’s anger without making things worse.
If Selune could spend the night with him and satisfy his needs, maybe she could buy herself some time and find a way out later.
Of course, she'd heard the scandals about Ken's sexually abusive behavior, but to her, that was a small price to pay for a chance to reclaim the lavish lifestyle she’d lost.
Selune’s face went ghostly pale, like all the blood had drained from her.
She looked at her mother in shock, eyes widen with disbelief.
Was her dear, sweet mother, really offering to send her out like this, as if she were nothing more than a prostitute?
The weight of betrayal pressed down on her chest. She opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.
Ken laughed, triumphant, and reached out to grab her arm.
“Hahaha, finally, someone who knows how to play the game!”
But just as his hand closed in, his wrist was caught in an unyielding grip.
Ken’s smirk vanished. He tried to pull his arm free, but the grip only tightened, cutting off any sense of control he thought he had.
“Let go! You fucking garbage.” Ken growled, “Get on your knees right now! Or else I will-”
“You will what?” Arthur sneered, his voice cold as ice.
His eyes locked onto Ken with an intensity. Air around them seem to drop in temperature.
“You think you’re in any position to demand anything?”
