Chapter 1

Just like every other day in Luther's life, this day was bad,he just prayed it would end as soon as possible. He stared at his boss counting the revenue generated from his sales and from the looks of it, it looked like a lot.

“Here you go Luther, you did real well today” he handed him two hundred dollar bills, which was nothing compared to the stacks he just shoved into his desk, Luther was tired of everything, he worked really hard in the field yet he never complained, he took whatever was given in hopes that one day all would be well with him and they would see him for his true potential as his wife Nova told him all the time.

But looking at the money in his hands, he wasn’t satisfied, it was unfair, “ I won’t take that, I need my share of profit” he dropped the money on the desk. Fred looked at him bewildered by his courage.

“What do you mean? It's the best payment out there, I am doing you a favor by giving you that money.”

Lies, it was all lies, Luther wasn’t that dumb to believe what he had just uttered, Fred was a cunny dwarf who derived joy in using people and his impetus had skyrocketed this past few months after the last bull run in the cosmetic business.

“Well I can see you are greedy, if you are not going to take what I give you, then leave, I can find your replacement anywhere and anytime all it takes is a fine young man to get all these women dropping their money and believe me, I can do it .” Fred stated.

It didn’t turn out the way Luther had expected, he wanted a raise, but he wasn’t going to get any, neither would he agree to stay here and suffer for this round ball he called a boss. He was tired of the constant intimidation and how he was being paid little compared to his credentials and co-workers who do less than he does, yet they earn more.

“Damn you, I quit” luther snarled at the man as he turned and left the office, he didn’t bother to clear his table as nothing there was valuable to him.

But it doesn’t end there, Luther knew his wife would be mad at him for calling quits on an abusive boss. So instead of going home to tell her the news he chose to lie to her instead, while he found another job, and worse of all, his wife had just lost her father.

The famous Mr Waylen , one of the richest men, and she had been sober all throughout the month, she barely ate, or spoke, she didn’t leave the house either, he felt the depth of her sadness and had tried cheering her up but nothing seemed to work, or better still fill the void of her dead father.

He wanted to get her something, but when he looked at his bank he had only two hundred dollars, which was made by selling a set of his old collectibles, it wasn’t much of a thing to ride home about after paying off some of his neck dragging dept but, all he could think of was how to make his wife happy with this.

So he chose to get her a gift with it(a necklace). On getting home with the gift behind his back, he saw her sitting in the living room going through some envelopes.

Her focus was so fixed on it that she didn’t notice his presence till he was close enough to take it from her hands.

It was an invitation to her family house, “ I am sorry, I didn’t want you to see it” she said fidgeting as she made an attempt to take it away from him.

Luther stared at it then back at her, it was an invitation sent by her mother to visit their house as their father's deeds were about to be read.

“I won’t go, if you don’t like it”

But he could tell it was a lie, her eyes gave her off, and he didn’t want to deprive her from her family, he knew what they meant to her, and even after their attempt to break up their marriage she still loved them, and hoped that one day they will see him and love him like she did.

“ We will go,” he said, dropping the file back on the chair. He handed her the box of necklace he bought with the last penny he had.

“Oh, thanks Luther” she pulled him in for a hug, kissing him all over, her gesture made his heart swell with delight, he liked the look on her face, and he was mostly proud of himself for making her happy, but soon his newly found Happiness came to an end when he remembered he would be going to her house.

Luther braced himself for the worst, as he walked back inside to get dressed, he knew no matter how well he was dressed, he was still going to be seen as a peasant who found a way to convince their last daughter to get married to him, it was an anthem for them, and he was used to it.

After everything, both of them were dressed and hurried off to the waylen’s mansion, just the facade of the building sent shivers down his body, it was big, nothing compared to the swamp they lived in, which made his decision even harder, but when he looked at his wife, he felt hopeful so he took his wife hands, straightened his suit and walked into the Mansion.

The bottler who opened the door for them was familiar with his wife and her husband, and also why they came, he threw looks of disgust at Luther as he led them inside, just inside the mansion sat the family lawyer and nova’s family, who were curiously waiting for nova, but immediately retaliated when they saw Luther.

“What are you doing here?, I invited her not you” Dorothy said as she charged at her son inlaw, luther,

“Good evening, mother.”

“I am not your mother you wretched man, get the hell out of my house before you pollute it” she threw herself on Luther but was held back by nova’s brother.

“ I don’t want him here in our house,” she insisted.

Nova looking at how low her husband was placed made her very sad. She tried to hide the tears but each time she faced this scene she just couldn't help herself. She had hoped they would love her regardless of who she married, but they chose not to, instead they endlessly ridiculed her.

“You know what, I am done, with all of you, you people are heartless and I curse the day I was born into this family” she yelled at her mother as she took Luther's hand.

“Let’s go babe, we don’t belong here” wiping her eyes clean, she pulled him out but Luther remained stationary, “ don’t be in a hurry, i’m fine, their words didn’t hurt me” he reassured her, but she wasn’t prepared to house their insults.

“Don’t pretend because of me, they are heartless people and you know that too, so let’s go back home”

“No, it’s not about me, this is for you, just listen to what they have to say, that’s all”

Nova listened to her husband and decided to give them a second chance, she took a seat, with luther by her side as the lawyer read all the wills from her fathers deeds

She patiently waited for her name to be called and her Inheritance to be allocated to her but all throughout the speech not even a line of her name appeared in the book which broke her even more as the lawyer finished.

“Daddy didn’t leave anything for me?” She asked, totally bewildered and heart broken.

Benedict scoffed before he replied, “ you chose to marry a brat didn’t you? ,there is nothing for you in this family”

The world came to a closing end, as Nova felt her heart break, it was a blow to her, and in the midst of the family. Luther could not help but blame himself for the insult and heartbreak Nova was going through.

Without a word, they stood to leave while the family casted hateful glance at them.

Benedict walked before them, stopping them from going outside, he showed his visible hatred for Luther, then focused on his little sister.

“I could give you some of my properties, but only on one condition, you have to marry James”

Nova raised her head to stare at her brother in disgust.

“ I hate you”
