Chapter 2
Back at home, luther sat in silence, his wife has been crying all day long, and he knew too well that regret was part of the reasons why she cried so much. He felt powerless before her, it was even worse now that he had no job to sustain them, she had no idea he was now jobless, he couldn’t tell her he was just a man who couldn’t even feed her now, he could not tell her that her family might be right after all. He loved her so much but a part of him kept on saying if he truly did love her as he claimed. He would be letting her go, her family was worried about her. They might insult him, but they did it for her, they wanted a good life for their daughter, and he knew if he was capable of giving it to her, they would not insult him so much like they do all the time, so he considered letting her go. They would give her the life he can’t dream of giving her, but Luther knew his wife, what they shared together was not about the money, he knew Nova would not leave. She chose to stay with him though she had the opportunity to be better, she loved him so much, she was determined to make it work with both of them. It broke Luther’s heart even more, as he had no idea how to make it up to her, he couldn’t start seeking a high paying job, no one hires people like him, he was meant to be servants, and nothing more, mostly in a world where his educational experience barely came into use . Confused and disturbed Luther walked out of the house to take some air when he received a call from an unknown number, he didn’t hesitate to answer, but he immediately wished he did, as a familiar voice spoke on the other side of the phone. It was Melissa, Nova’s older sister. “What is it this time?” he asked. Her tone was calm and collected, Luther immediately knew there was something behind her well mannered attitude, a few seconds into the call he already expected words of abuse and a constant reminder that he was nothing and would never amount to anything. ‘Come over to the coffee shop not far from your house’ she said then ended the call. He was confused by her demand, but he had to choose to listen to her this time around. He considered so many reasons for Mellisa waylen to invite him over, but nothing seemed to be making sense at that moment. He wasn’t left with much options either, he had only two, either he goes to his wife who was crying and regretting her decisions, or he sees his sister in law who might have a solution to his problem. The latter seemed preferable so he headed to the coffee shop, she it wasn't hard to notice, and he spotted her immediately he entered the shop, as always she was over dressed and when he came closer, she took out her napkin and closed her nose. “What do you want from me?” He questioned, she rolled her eyes totally exasperated as she handed him a parcel, Luther glanced at the package she had slid to him. Suspicion aroused in his mind. “This is a blank check, and a car key to the Mercedes outside, take it and disappear, whatever amount you write would be given to you, just leave my sister alone, get out of her life forever” her voice was high pitched, which had everyone staring at them now. As Luther’s eyes scanned the room, a sigh escaped his lips, he knew better than to react, he already expected it from Mellisa. “Take the money” she said, moving it towards Luther. He was baffled by the price tag his relationship was worth, the love he had for his wife couldn’t be compared to the amount of money on the check, he wouldn’t know how to spend the money if she wasn’t in the equation, he wanted to pay her back for sticking with him through moments like this. “I know you want money, just take it and leave” she added, Luther stared at the check then back at the lady. He thought about the life his wife would leave with her family, they were bad people who barely didn’t care about what average citizens like them go through all their lives. They were people who saw everyone as subjects because they were born into wealth. He felt lucky that his wife was not like them, and a lady like her deserved the world, no matter how she got it, she wasn’t meant to suffer, so he gave the offer a thought. “ I will talk to nova if she wants to go back home then she can, I don’t need your money” with the last strand of dignity left in him he stood and exited the cafe. Life was already unbearable for him, he wanted to end it all, as he walked back to his house totally deranged in anguish. He saw his wife in the room sleeping with her head facing her wall, the second she noticed him she hurriedly dried her tears, faked a smile then walked up to him. “ Welcome back honey,” she said. Her eyes were sore, and it was obvious she cried all through his absence, at that moment Luther noticed how stressed she looked. His wife was a beauty, but her saggy eyes and dark eyes bags were all that dented her face now. “Why did you decide to stay, you could go back home and get all that you want” Luther stated. Nova narrows her eyes at him. It was the first time he directly told her to go home, she immediately knew something was going on, but couldn’t pinpoint where. “Don’t feel bad, I am just missing dad that’s all” she lied as she walked closer to him, pulling him in her bosom. “You can go home Nova, there’s a man who would love you and fend for you, I can’t do that, I don’t want you crying here and barring regret in your heart because of me” “ I love you babe , I can’t marry someone else no matter what you say, I choose you, and I will continue to choose you, till death do us path” luther heart blossomed with love as he stared at his wife. Their love was priceless, no amount in the world can be compared to this, and he was just at the verge of letting her go. “ I love you too” he kissed her on her forehead before walking out of the room, a part of him was calm yet worried. With no place to go, and so much uncertainty he went back to the waylen’s mansion. He only had a few bucks with him, and just the distance there was half of what he had in his pocket, but he wanted to confront them about how stupid they were and how badly they treated his wife. He wanted to tell them that she wouldn't leave him, nor would he leave her. And on getting there he met James, the suitor for Nova, he never really took note of him. But his regal appearance sold him out to Luther, he had the perfect brown hair, a wealthy smile, and well built body. Everything on James was expensive, and Waylen’s family adored him, he was just like them. “What is this peasant looking for here, do you need food?, you look like you are badly in need of it” they all chuckled at the sound of the insult. Luther felt so embarrassed, he considered going back home.He thought about his wife and how much pain she would be in, if he went back to her without making it clear to her family that she didn’t deserve to be taken advantage of. He walked towards her siblings who still insulted him, without the regard that he could hear them clearly from where he stood. Their sole purpose was to provoke him enough to make him beg for their acceptance, but Luther never did. “What do you think you are doing here you thief” James said to Luther. “He probably came here to beg for money, after taking our daughter away from us, he can’t even take care of himself,” said Benedict. “I did not come for you, I came to see them” he told James. James had his eyes fixed on the entrance, he was looking for Nova, but it seemed her husband came alone, so he took it as an opportunity to ridicule him even more. “Get the guards to throw him out, men like him deserve nothing, look at him, the only good thing in his life is your daughter” “ I have tried to talk to
Like a dream, Luther urged himself to wake up, but it was just too real, the word ‘Master’ baffled him and left him standstill. Throughout his lifetime he had heard other names that were not pleasant to the heart, but this particular name he was referred to gave him chills. He wanted to tell the macho men that they got the wrong person, but he remained mute instead, and bowed his head so they didn't tell how scared he was. If somehow they found out that he was the wrong person, he was prepared for another round of embarrassment. The men walked towards the building, it was bigger than any residential house he had ever seen, not even that of his in-laws, and the weirdest part was where it was located. As the men began to walk towards the building, he just followed them till they were inside this glamorous gold like castle. Amused by the sight, words couldn’t explain what it felt like to be inside such a place. Gradually, he was led into a room in this castle. The walls were
Luther knew he would do anything to keep her by his side, and make her leave the life her parents swore he wouldn’t be able afford, same goes for everything he was ever ridiculed for in life, and when Nova went inside to prepare dinner for both of them, Luther took the liberty to call the number Mattew had given him earlier. ‘Tell me everything there is to know about my father's wealth’ Luther said. And Mattew invited him, he volunteered to pick him up but Luther disagreed, he knew Nova would notice any oddness around him, and now that he wasn’t sure he was dreaming he didn’t want to risk telling her anything, so he went away to the street after taking excuses from Nova. Mattew picked him up and they went to the bar, ordered a few drinks before he started speaking. “Your father is Vicenzo crux, an infamous Trillionaire, and a businessman. In the Cruz family, wealth was never meant to leave the family name and that was why he had to let you go, he could never marry your mother n
At night when Nova was asleep Luther took out the file that he hid from her then started going through it, to his amusement, the companies which were enlisted were all the names of big companies, few of which were familiar to him, and many more in other states, and countries he had never visited. Some were names rumored to be owned by men who were rich since the beginning of time. They made the cover of Forbes magazine each year , and those names were mentioned in these files, and how these men happened to be in some kind of brotherhood with his alleged father and some investors among them too. It was just too much for Luther to handle; he had no idea if he was going to be happy or sad with so much power and authority, he felt too inferior as all these came with so much responsibility, one he couldn’t toss away with ease. It took him the whole night to navigate the ton of money under his name but he finally did and later went to bed with the aim of visiting the companies in the m
Luther sat down with pride, at the end of the meeting, he had just spoken with people he had never dreamt of talking with, now leaving the table he felt like a whole new person. “We are meant to see your mother after this, she wants to see you” Mattew said, which instantly changed Luther’s mood, he never wanted to speak about his mother but it seemed she was the sole reason why all this came into play so the least he could do was see her. “Where?” “A cafe not far from here” he said, Luther agreed to see her, then he took the the chances and they drove to the cafe where the mother was seated, “ oh Luther dear” she wrapped her hands around him but Luther resisted, he saw her affection as bland, she should have been there for him earlier rather than coming back When the damage has been done. “It’s so good seeing you again” she voiced, Luther only nodded and took the seat before him, his mother noticed his nonchalant attitude and felt bad but wasn’t ready to give up, with a snap of her
On getting to the house. It wasn’t what any of them were expecting, Nova wasn’t a fan of parties, she had made it clear to her family and they were fully aware of her distaste in such glamor. The Waylen’s mansion was bubbling with lights and songs, there were a lot of people drinking outside, a lot of people that she didn’t know. “Luther dear, let’s go back, I don't think I want to do this anymore” Nova said, totally unprepared to face the scenery. “But we are here already?Maybe we should say hi to them before leaving, what do you think!” Her Adam’s apple bobbled up and down as she stared at everyone in disdain, she had social anxiety, she hates loud noises and she could already smell the panic attack lurking at the Corner. With a slight nod she replied. “We won’t waste much time” She didn’t want to say anything further, both of them walking hand in hand moved towards the main building when Nova's brother sighted them, from the bosom of his colleagues. A frown sat on his
When Nova went to sleep, Luther took his phone then dialed Matthew’s number, it rang numerous times before he answered, Luther was short tempered at the moment, the last thing he wanted was to be delayed. The moment his phone call was answered he said.“Do I have any schedule tomorrow?”“No sir, just the family meeting which is compulsory”“Fine, Meet me at our usual stop first thing in the morning, I want us to discuss something very important, and also if it’s Within your reach, I need all the information you can get on the Waylen family”“Oh sir, is there any specific reason, the Waylen’s family have their peaks and flaws, It would be easier if you could indicate”“I need to know their weakness and strength”“Sure, you got it” The call ended, Luther couldn’t get an ounce of sleep, he could not get the vengeful thought out of his mind, he stared at his wife as she slept peacefully. His eyes darted around her, she was thinner than he remembered, her glass skin now had visible pores
While Luther faced his relatives, Nova was faced with a bunch of aspiring employees, she was nervous and could only think of the negative outcome. Her eyes scanned the room nervously, everyone in the room was nicely dressed compared to her, all of them were mostly known by everyone, they were famous people with high caliber like her, but the way they stared at her, she knew they were talking ill of her, and mostly irritated that she was in their midst. Though she was born in a wealthy family like all of them, her status in society was nothing but a ridicule at the moment, people stared at her as though she was a caricature and they made obvious comments to her.Nova shrunk on her seat, decapitated limb by limb by their stigmatizing glare, she has heard Luther’s name one too many times to confuse their gossipy to be another person. It has been a long time since she was out in public, she could only wonder what Luther went through everyday when he went out for work, she contemplated gi
