Chapter 3

He thought about his wife and how much pain she would be in, if he went back to her without making it clear to her family that she didn’t deserve to be taken advantage of.

He walked towards her siblings who still insulted him, without the regard that he could hear them clearly from where he stood. Their sole purpose was to provoke him enough to make him beg for their acceptance, but Luther never did.

“What do you think you are doing here you thief” James said to Luther.

“He probably came here to beg for money, after taking our daughter away from us, he can’t even take care of himself,” said Benedict.

“I did not come for you, I came to see them” he told James.

James had his eyes fixed on the entrance, he was looking for Nova, but it seemed her husband came alone, so he took it as an opportunity to ridicule him even more.

“Get the guards to throw him out, men like him deserve nothing, look at him, the only good thing in his life is your daughter”

“ I have tried to talk to Nova, but she would rather stay with me, and that’s why I have come to tell you that she is still your family and you shouldn’t punish her for something no one can help with” it was the most modest way to tell them to forgive her and forget about her decisions, she needed help and he wanted to get it for her.

“And who do you think you are to come in here and tell us what to do?, you can’t tell us how to treat our sister, and if you had taken the money we offered, maybe you would have been half way out of the country” Benedict yelled as he jolted from his seat.

His temperament was unruly, he held Luther by the collar, as he glared at him unblinking.

“How dare you!” He slapped Luther to the floor, followed by a series of kicks, which dented his rib.

Luther was pained by his actions, he wanted to fight back but he knew he wouldn’t win the battle, everyone in the room was against him, and out of respect for his wife he chose to stay put, he didn’t want nova to know about his willingness to visit them, and the offer they made him.

“ Get out of my house now, else I would have you beaten to a pulp” he threatened as he threw Luther back to the floor, kicking him severally.

“Guards, show this bastard his way out”

Luther was infuriated by everything, the disrespect and how he was treated, so he chose to leave them with a word, one that would have them thinking.

“You will regret this” he spat the blood in his mouth as he stood to leave, but before he could stand, he was smacked down again by Benedict, while James stood at the corner laughing at him being ridiculed.

The guards came in and they carried the already bleeding man out of the building, they carelessly dumped him outside the gate like trash.

Words couldn’t describe how tired he was, how much pain he was in, and how much he wished he could go back in there and beat the hell out of them.

He regretted going there, his life was already a mess, he had no way of going back and even if he did, his wife would be worried about all the bruises he was given, he couldn’t risk telling her the truth, knowing she would nag him endlessly for it.

But whatever was going to happen, he was willing to take it.

Luther stood from the floor as he walked further into the street in hopes that he would find a place to stay, he had nowhere to go, and not enough money to go home which was even worse for him. He wanted to cry badly, but people knew him.

He knew if he was caught crying on the road, people will take pictures and then ridicule him by posting it on social media. They had done it one too many times so he chose to endure the pain.

‘Men don’t cry’

‘Be a man, you must be strong, for Nova, for your new family, you have to be strong Luther’ it was how he grew up, it was the only word of consolation he knew and at this point In time it didn’t work, and he couldn’t get on his feet anymore, he didn’t want to be strong, not anymore.

His body fell to the floor, close to a bin, as he coughed out blood, his mouth was sore and a part of him didn’t feel right.

Just when he was about to embrace the darkness that was just around the corner he noticed some men in black approaching him.

‘Benedict must have sent them’ he thought as he hurried backwards, they were about to kill him and make his wife a widow.

The fear of leaving his wife alone gripped him so he took to his feet, adrenaline coursed through him, but his body was too bruised, it didn’t take long before he fell to the floor.

“ Luther!” one of the men yelled his name, but he didn’t stop running, he stood from the floor and started running again, but this time not as fast.

The men at the back caught up with him and all four of them surrounded him. There was no escape; he would rather die fighting than be tackled and bullied to death.

With his feet positioned and his hands stretched and clenched into a hard ball he said, “Come at me and stop being a coward, the waylen family sent you right?__

You assholes, come at me!” he staggered on both feet as his world spinned around him.

“ I am here to help you, trust me”

“Who are you?” Luther questioned, confused by their calmness and unwillingness to beat him up .

“ I will tell when you enter my van, you don’t look fit enough and you need to get treatment”

Luther wasn’t convinced, they weren’t armed but they looked dangerous, and as he stared at the van approaching him, it was tinted, he could be killed inside and no one would know.

“No, you must tell me who you are, I won’t enter that Van”

“We were sent by the Cruz family, your mother told us where we would find you, well we followed you here, but if you would please follow us and we will tell you all you needed to know when we get there”

Luther was convinced instantly at the mention of his mother, the woman who ruined his life, and left him going from foster homes to foster homes all because she wasn’t prepared to take care of a child. Why does she want to see him now?

But there wasn’t a way he would know if he stood still, so he took the offer and entered the car, the ride was long and far.

After so many hours, he finally arrived at a glamorous mansion situated in a valley, he would have said it was heaven but angels don’t drive SUV and dress in black, nor do they leave with in so much luxury

“ Where am I?” He asked.

“You are home master”
