It's complicated

A lot of time passed, and with five people before me, I was next in line for the test.

The test hall was getting quite empty, since most supernaturals were teleported to the fabrication room, while the others were sent back home.

Tiny beads of sweat rolled down my face as I felt really anxious for a reason I couldn't understand.

I exhaled lightly before stepping forward to touch the orb in front of me. As I touched it, its bright yellow glow grew paler and paler until it turned white.

There seemed to be a small explosion within it, which caused it to shine with a sudden bright white light.

I noticed the startled look on everyone's face, but I couldn't really understand what happened.

The headmistress was puzzled.

"What just happened?", she asked.

I took my sweaty palms off the orb before it assumed it's yellow glow again.

But there seemed to be a problem - the magic screen didn't display the kind of supernatural being I was, even though the orb confirmed that I was a supernatural.

The headmistress turned to her assistant amidst the confusion. Her puzzled looks couldn't be concealed.

"Could it be that the orb is broken?", she asked.

Tabitha shook her head in disagreement.

"No, it isn't broken...I suggest he goes again", Tabitha replied.

Someone from behind me yelled, "That's not fair, it'll be cheating... I'm next!"

"You can't just keep us here all day...most of us are really hungry", another complained.

I was just about to step aside, when the headmistress instructed me to touch the orb again, ignoring people's complains.

Just like before, the orb shone brightly with a white light to indicate that he was supernatural, but the screen went blank again.

I noticed how confused the headmistress and Tabitha looked, and it made me feel even more anxious.

"I'm sorry, but is there a problem?", I asked.

I had to ask.

The headmistress shifted her gaze to Tabitha again for some seconds, before she shook her head in response to my question.

"No...it's just that your status as a supernatural is complicated", she said.

"Does it mean I'm not supernatural?", I asked again.

"You're supernatural, but our screen must be having some issues, since it can't tell us what being you fall under. "

Being comfortable with our conversation, since we seemed to be whispering,  I was just about to ask another question.

"Does it --"

But I was interrupted.

She flicked her hand once, and in what seemed like the blink of an eye, I found myself in a room full of other people.

'Supernaturals',  I guessed.

..............

Soon after the test was over, the persons who weren't identified as supernaturals were sent back to their families, with their memories of the academy erased beforehand.

The orbs and screens soon disappeared after the headmistress cast a spell on them.

"This year's turnout proved to be more than we expected indeed" said Tabitha.

"Yeah, and it means that we've got a lot of work to do...the dean will also be proud of it this time around", the headmistress replied.

"Indeed...the dean, should we inform him of the boy with no supernatural status?", asked Tabitha.

"Not yet...we don't want to spoil our moment, but I'll tell him myself when the time is right. "

"All right...I'll just tell anyone that asks that he's a Phoenix."

The headmistress was immediately disturbed by an almost silent buzz which came from the glowing bracelet on her wrist.

She stared at it for a while before heaving a sigh.

"Good...you should help Dan out in the fabrication room. I need to attend a meeting with the board", she said.

Without any  warning, she poofed out of the room before Tabitha also did the same.

'The fabrication room', I thought.

As I figured out, the fabrication room was where all the students' uniforms and ID cards were fabricated and given to them.

Like the other rooms I've been to, it was large and had thousands of circular patterns engraved on its ground.

A man who introduced himself as Dan, began explaining how the whole fabrication stuff worked. He was obviously the one in charge of the place, as he knew a lot about everything there.

"Each student has to stand upon a single circular pattern where they would get scanned by Sage, and their details would be fabricated immediately", he explained.

Just as he explained, others stepped upon the circular patterns, and a dim ray of blue light highlighted the patterns on which they stood.

Their ordinary clothes were transformed into the academy's uniforms.

Each uniform had a unique colour that represented a particular set of supernaturals. For instance, the phoenixes wore red, fairies wore pink, wolves wore blue and so on.

After the transformation, they all stepped off the patterns.

As for me, I refused to move an inch off the circular pattern I stood upon, because I hoped to be transformed like others.

I felt very embarrassed when I noticed how people started mocking me for looking different from them.

My heart thumped faster in fear as Dan walked up to me with a really serious facial expression.

His voice sounded even more serious as he spoke to me;

"What kind of supernatural being are you?", he asked.

He was right to ask, cus I wasn't transformed like the others. I couldn't even tell why.

I was almost starting to crumble from within, and by now my lips were trembling in anxiousness.

I wasn't really sure of what to say, and it became even worse when I noticed everyone's blank stare at me. They were expecting me to say something, but I just froze.

I kept on staring at him, until an answer to his question popped right into my head.

"It's-it's complicated", I managed to say.

I pursed my lips, looking down in shame as everyone jeered and laughed at me in such a scornful manner. Luckily, he instructed them to keep quiet.

My gaze gravitated upwards and was coincidentally locked upon Zora. I was stealing a gaze at her.

She maintained a rather calm composure unlike others, and refused to laugh while others did.

Instead, she adjusted her glasses before shifting her eyes away from me immediately she noticed I was staring. It felt awkward to her, I guess.

My mind returned back to the unkind man standing in front of me.

"What do you mean by 'complicated'?", he asked me.

I still wasn't sure of what next to say, so I just remained silent. I stared deep into his deep blue eyes, and almost lost track of my consciousness.

I was frozen in fear.

Just then, a voice came from behind him. It was Tabitha.

"He's a Phoenix"

She had appeared behind him even before I could speak. This eased me a bit, and I exhaled silently after he turned away to face Tabitha.

"Then he should have been given the Phoenix uniform as well", he argued.

"It's sage's fault...he must be having some issues with the identification protocol cus we experienced a glitch earlier, during the test", she replied with a smile.

"Let me fix that", she said before flicking her fingers.

In the blink of an eye, my outfit got transformed into the Phoenix uniform.

I was putting on a white shirt and a pair of red trousers, paired with a red vest and some really cool pair of shoes.

I remained utterly confused at what had just happened, but I kept my normal composure and remained silent.

Tabitha turned to face everyone without the slightest hint of any facial expression.

"Your ID cards have been impressed in your minds...whenever you're asked to identify yourselves in this school, just think of an ID card and it'll appear in your hand", she explained.
