chapter 8

Marcus emerged from the bank, the black card dazzling in his hand. He glanced at it once more. The knowledge that 10 billion was in it drove him crazy. To him, that was too much, but it was just a meager amount compared to what his father gave him.

"I can't spend this alone, Lydia has been there for me all these years, let me give her another chance, so we can spend the money together," he muttered to himself and took a step forward. Just then, a sleek black car stopped in front of him, shiny and expensive-looking.

Two figures emerged from the car, a sexy blonde lady and a young man. They looked sharp and smart.

"Young master," they both bowed. Marcus was startled, wondering who they were.

The lady, wearing glasses, stepped forward and introduced herself, "I am Paulina, a specialist from JK Technology. We specialize in hacking, wiretapping, programming, and breaking into systems."

"This is my assistant," she said, pointing to the guy beside her.

Marcus looked dumbfounded and confused. "Why are you—"

"We are sent by your Dad to work for you," Paulina replied.

"Dad? From JK Technology?" he repeated.

"Yeah, JK Technology is the only popular Dad in New York," she replied.

His dad did not tell him about JK Technology, and his dad claimed he had given him all his properties and assets, with no mention of JK Technology.

"I think you have mistaken. My Dad did not have any company in New York," he retorted.

"Your father, Mr. Thonks, is the owner of JK Technology, and we are here at his command. You can call him to confirm," Paulina suggested.

He dialed his phone, but there was no answer. He groaned in frustration.

"Maybe he is in an urgent meeting. Your Dad is the owner of JK Technology. G****e search it," Paulina suggested again.

He immediately searched "JK Technology" on G****e. The results flooded in. JK Technology was one of the biggest companies in New York, specializing in innovating electronic products. The CEO in the image was his father, but the name listed was Jackson. It was undoubtedly his father's image.

He looked totally confused. "Can you explain this?" he asked, showing it to Paulina.

"Yeah, that might seem confusing, but that is the name your father chooses to use in New York, it is normal for people to do that for many personal reasons, and they will legally do that. Your father chose to change his company and his name to Jackson due to some reason that he knows only… is a simple thing you will later understand," Paulina explained.

Marcus was sure there was something behind this JK Technology that his father couldn't even tell him. He shrugged and thought, "Who cares? All I have to do is spend money and let my subordinates, staff, and employees do the rest."

"Okay, but do I need to have a hacker with me?" he asked.

Paulina chuckled. "As time goes on, you will understand. The business world is not just about flexing around. You will come to understand."

Marcus shrugged. "Okay, I have to go somewhere now. You don't have to follow me around."

"But, master…" the guy wanted to say, but Marcus shot him a gaze.

"No 'but.' I don't need you now. I will inform you when I need you," he said.

"Okay, master," they said and bowed.

Marcus was about to go on his way but turned back. "And don't call me master. Call me by my name. I want to conceal my status for a while."

They nodded, and the guy said, "Okay, Marcus."

"Good!" he said and stopped beside the road, looking for a cab.

The guy walked to him. "Master, use the car instead."

He shot him a gaze. "Why are you so stubborn? Don't call me master, and I will take a cab."

"Okay, Marcus," he forcefully said. At that moment, a cab stopped in front of him. Marcus did not want to reveal himself to Lydia to know her true character. He entered the cab and drove away.

Paulina looked at the guy, and they smiled at each other. The guy, Ivan, was not just a hacker but an exceptional assassin, and his assignment was to protect Marcus.

Lydia sat somberly on the sofa as the events of last night flooded her mind. She was disappointed in herself, not that she regretted it.

Lydia admired Marcus for his hardworking spirit and his devoted heart. Since the day they started their fake marriage, Marcus had never raised his voice at her. She knew her mother and brother always treated him poorly, but he never retaliated.

Lydia didn't love him, but she admired him and felt sorry for him; he deserved to be happy. Lydia had been contemplating divorcing him, but she couldn't bring herself to say it.

"Maybe there's a good reason I was drunk. I really need Hales to help me with my crises; he's the only one who can revive my company," she muttered to herself, but her heart said something else.

Just then, someone knocked on the door. She breathed fast, thinking it was Marcus. She went to open it, only to find Amelia, her friend, frowning at her.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

Amelia stormed in and jumped on the sofa. "Isn't that your lowlife husband?"

"He's not my husband. What happened?" Lydia sat beside her.

"He's just a wolf in sheep's clothing, a bad person pretending to be good. He's wicked."

"Just tell me what happened," Lydia snapped.

"In the bank today, I collided with him, and he deliberately stepped on me, seriously, and refused to apologize." She lied with a serious tone.

Lydia frowned, confused. "Marcus did that?" She asked for confirmation.

The Marcus she knew would never do that.

"Yes, I'm telling you. He even whispered to me that he did it intentionally and used his influence in the bank to lie about me and embarrass me. I was treated like a dog and threatened to close my account," she...

"Really, that's horrible... And what influence did he use?" Lydia asked curiously.

"He happened to be just an errand boy for an influential customer in the bank, a lowlife, stinking errand boy," she told her.

"Errand boy, and he didn't know his place. I can't believe Marcus did that; so he's been pretending all this time."

"Yes, he's pretending. I was told to move my money away from the bank within seven days, even though I did nothing wrong. I saw him smirking at me; he was enjoying it."

Lydia fumed in anger. "I was even considering accepting him back; I didn't know he behaved like this."

"Don't even think about it. He doesn't deserve you. I'm sure he showed his true character because of what happened last night," Amelia pointed out.

"He deserved it; what he did to you is wickedness," she said, just then someone knocked on the door.
