He knew Penelope doesn't like him, and she has every right to be mad at him in a situation like this, but not her accusing him wrongly in front of Ivy and wanting her to know about her mother's disappearance; he didn’t want Ivy to hear about that.

He covered Ivy's ears even more, trying to shield her from the harsh words and the reality of their situation.

He needed to find a way to fix this, to bring Hazel back and make things right for Ivy.
