I Just Pity You

He has so much trust in Naomi's love for him. Naomi accepted him despite that he was a commoner. She's from the Elite City. He's from the bottom. He couldn't forget that dreamy eyes he saw one time right at the moment he need of saving. If not for Naomi he could have been killed in the mine camp. Drex, Naomi's brother always picked on him. Drex always made sure he'll have a difficult work life in the mining camp.

"Hey! You are filthy! you do this!"

Drex never had called him in his name. He always assigned him a dangerous task in the mine like underground drilling, or with explosives, like blasting or moving the ore. Though it's still difficult, he'll be thankful if he's assigned to the breaking rocks operation. For Drex and the rest and the likes of him, Henley's life isn't valuable. They don't care if he'll die down there, a commoner like him always gets the lowliest and most dangerous job.

For Henley, this work life of his is nothing compared to what he had when he was a kid. Until his teen years, he had been living a hard life on the street. He's lucky if he'll get a legal job in a day or if he'll get fairly compensated. Life in the mining camp, though cruel, is much better than life in the streets.

Drex's prickly treatment towards him is actually nothing compared to what he had gone through with his former foster parents. At least Drex had a reason to hate him -- it's because of Noami. He remembers when he was a kid, he was beaten up by his foster dad for no reason at all. He's just drunk, that's all. Then the next foster parent he had been into was not really into adopting him. He was just taken out of the housing for business, thus he was forced into labor at a young age. They were asked to do illegal jobs and when he refused he would get beat up. From then on, Henley learned not to trust anyone. He learned to be tougher in order to survive until he meet Grandma Mimzy. He recovered his trust somehow, yet he's still in most instances, selective. Yeah, he doesn't trust easily. He's not easy to befriend. He has his own world. He always thinks and expects the worst in a person. He's cynical, but then Naomi came one day and had broken into the defensive barriers he had placed around himself. He opened himself to him, his past, his no-good life. And he couldn't be any happier when despite all, she still accepted him, despite that she's of the Elite City and he's a nobody with a trashy life. From then on, Henley decided he'll live his life, and would work hard in order to be deserving of Naomi, so her family would accept him. Yet, those dream of a bright future was ruined one day when Naomi told her that she was about to get married and that her family had arranged the marriage for her, to someone that's also a resident of Elite City.

"I thought you love me...look we can flee away from here and have our life in another country! Far from everyone, far--"

" Do you think you can just leave your grandma?"  Naomi cut him off.

It isn't just hesitation that he saw in her eyes, but he sensed that she was already firm. She doesn't want him.

"Naomi you made a promise--"  Henley's voice was fainting. The pain he was feeling right now was even louder than his voice.

Naomi shook her head.

She's breaking up with him but how come there are no tears in her eyes? Am I the only one hurting here? Henley thought to himself.

" I can't be with you, Henley, my dad is right! There's nothing you can give me! I'll just ruin my life with you."  Naomi said.

"But do you love me? you love me, right?"  Henley asked.

No answer.

Noami was quiet. She chooses not to answer.

Again Henley asked, "Have you loved me?"

Have. Finish. Deep inside him, he's hoping that somehow Naomi had loved him all throughout that they were together.

" I just--pity you,"  Naomi said.

Henley felt like he had become numb. He couldn't move for a second. He was just staring blankly at Naomi couldn't believe what she had just said.

Pity? Sh**! All those years that they were together, that's all she had for her -- pity? All because he's poor? What am I a charity case? She's the girl of my dreams. She was my motivation and my reason for living. I dreamed of a good life because of her, and have worked hard to deserve her but then now she's telling me that she really had not loved me after all? Damn!

"Henley, I'm sorry,"

Naomi tried to reach his hand, but he avoided her. He turned his back, so she could not see his tears, lest she'll have another reason to pity him.

"Best wishes,"  he whispered and then walked away.

On his way out of the mining camp, a luxurious pickup truck blocked his way. When a middle-aged man hop out from it, Henley realized his in bigger trouble this time. It was Naomi's dad. Mr. Krux was known for his ruthless violent personality. Mr. Krux heads his way toward him. His steps were intimidating, and his cold face was threatening yet for any reason, Henley just stood on his feet feeling without any fear. He had been with the worst people all throughout his life. The likes of Mr. Krux were just usual to him.

When he got near, Mr. Krux looked at him with disdain. His eyes trailed at him from head to toe, then he spits after he throws his cigarette. Mr. Krux smirked, somehow intrigued that Henley did not even flinch at his rough gesture. Most of the commoners would tremble when faced with him, but this guy was shameless and tough. Mr. Krux raised his hand, calling his henchmen. And with a signal from him, his henchmen had rushed to beat Henley, to his surprise, unlike the other commoners he had beaten up, Henley retaliated. He did not just crawl in pain willingly receiving the punches and kicks, instead, he also swing his arms to smash his henchmen's faces. Mr. Krux clenched his teeth.

" Hit him! More!" he shouted.

Seeing Henley not bowing down to his power makes him even more angry. A minute after, Mr. Krux was smiling with satisfaction. He must admit, the guy was courageous but he's just one compared to his many henchmen. When they're all done with him, he approaches Henley and humiliated his bleeding face.

" Stay away from Naomi, filthy commoner!"  Mr. Krux said to him.

Then, he get cash from his pocket and slapped it on his face.

" Your last pay in the mining camp!"  Mr. Krux said.

And they leave, hopping in again on their pickup trucks as if they did nothing. While Henley was left with the scattered cash. He picked it all up, and counted, later he realized those were even not enough for his monthly pay. He clenched his fists.

He's angry and he can't do a thing, this makes him even more angry. Imagine all the harsh treatment and overwork he had gone through in the camp, plus all the beatings today, only to end up getting underpaid! Last pay? This cash did not even makeup for his supposed to be month's pay!

"S*** Aarrrghhh!!!!"

Henley could only scream all sh** that he feels right now.

Then his phone sounded.

A message. It was their neighbor.

Henley, hurry, your grandmother was rushed to the hospital!
