Just One Shot

He was jobless. He was brokenhearted. And his grandmother was in the hospital. Perhaps there could be no more f** up life as his. The next few days, Naomi's wedding news was everywhere. The Krux family takes pride in it. He even heard Mr Krux announcing over television that her daughter's wedding is going to be the grandest of the year.

Henley turned to the window to not hear the tv in the end. He's on the public bus at the moment, and even up here, he's hearing about Naomi's wedding. He remembered his encounter with her last night.

So, that arrogant guy was her fiancee? Adder. Yeah, that name stick in his mind, when that arrogant who he saw wrapping his arms around Naomi uttered his name. How could he forget him? He was too proud to say who he was! He even ordered the bar staff to drag him away. Later he learned that this Adder guy was the guy whom Naomi had cheated on with. Yeah, it turns out that behind those innocent faces of hers, and those pretentious love she had shown to him, she was cheating on him all along. That night when they had a heated confrontation, he learned right from her that Adder was his long-time boyfriend, that he isn't just someone whom her parents had arranged for her to marry, that while they were together, she was with him too.

"Look, sorry, I really wanted to end our relationship but I pity you that it might just ruin you, you already have many problems I --"

"You should have told me the truth instead of letting me cling to false hope!"  Henley said.

"Sorry,"

That's all Naomi could say.

She chooses Adder. Of course. They belong together. They're both from Elite City. Aside from that, it's what Naomi's family wanted.

"I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't mean to cheat on you. I should have broken with you up sooner but--"

" Oh, please stop it! Stop repeating the reason why you choose to pretend to love me!"  Henley exclaimed.

"Hey! Is this guy bothering you?"

It was Adder. He interrupted. He looked at him from head to toe and when he made sure that he was not one of them, his cheap outfit was telling them outright anyway. Henley was wearing worn-out sneakers, tattered jeans, and a faded shirt. If not for his handsome face and well-built body, he will look even cheaper in this outfit he's wearing.

Adder smirked at him.

"That bar doesn't accept shabby dressers, dude!"  he mocked at him, then he ordered the bouncer of the bar to drag him out of the place.

Henley shook his head. He tried to stop those hurtful memories from flashing back. He took a deep breath and stared out of the window again, as the bus swayed him in motion.

Focus. There's grandma which I need to attend to this day! He told himself.

He woke up early today to find for the best medicine for his grandmother. He was a bit hopeless when the doctor told him that his grandmother will not be cured unless she'll be admitted to the hospital in Elite City, for outside the city, there was nothing best they can offer for diseases like his grandmother. His grandmother needs immediate surgery but that's something he can't make ways right now, so he woke up early today to look for medicine. Maybe there's a good pill here outside Elite City that would help in prolonging his grandmother's life even just for a bit. He's hoping there is. So, Henley spent his day, wandering from street to street, asking every drugstore he could see. He actually doesn't have enough money in his pocket, just the insufficient last pay he got from the mine, that's all he has, but he took the risk of searching for medicine like he have enough money for it.

"I'm sorry but we don't have that brand, only the generic ones,"

Henley heard that more than five times today from all the drug stores he had been into. He's actually looking for a specific brand for he was told that one was really effective, but then he learned that the brand he was looking for could only be found in Elite City.

Henley sighed.

Out of frustration, he sat down on the bench on the side street. His mind was blank. Yeah, perhaps, Naomi was right, he's pitiful for that is exactly what he is right now. Chances! That's all that I want to have right now. I want to have a chance like how those other people have, yeah, especially the residents of Elite City, how come all the chances in life were for them? While we are here, outside, we settle ourselves with their crumbs, we live with the mediocrities and with the lowliest of this life has to offer.

Chance! I want to have even just one single chance! Henley thought to himself.

"Mr. President, how come this red tape letter was your way of purging our country?"

The voice of the tv interviewer drew Henley's attention. Now his eyes were directed to that tv billboard that was hanging on the highway street.

On the screen was a replay of Keres Wiscon's interview. Still, the topic was the red tape letter. Keres answered the interviewer's questions with all calmness and grace like he was sure and he knows what he was doing.

" The commoners say that the red tape letter is promoting an inequality, but I'd rather call it segregation,"  Keres replied.

"Segregation?"

Even the interviewer was confused.

"Segregation is necessary for purging, in getting rid of dirt. If we don't separate or group those that are similar and not, the able and unable, the helper and helpless, then we cannot clearly see the dirt that's underlying in between. Like in a healthy ecosystem, we must see that our country's society does not have parasites that live on feasting with the strong and rich, but I want therefore to make sure that our society's ecosystem is living in a mutual symbiotic relationship,"  Keres explained.

Parasites! Did he just refer to the lowly as parasites?

Henley must admit that the President is talking gold. He nailed his explanation that most people see his every word as perfect. Yeah, he has a point on that but look at the result of the purge he's making! Henley could expect that sooner he'll be labeled as a parasite then instead of just being called filthy!

The words coming out of Keres Wiscon's mouth are creating a mindset, a culture in the people of Red Coast, and it's particularly making the residents of Elite City arrogant and proud, thinking that by all these, they were special and especially set apart, and were above the rest.

Yet, anyway, what I need right now is in Elite City. Okay, I'll make the most of my embarrassment...I'm desperate!

Henley thinks.

Then, he dialed Naomi's number.

"Hey, I do not know anyone in Elite City but just you, can you help me, please with my grandmother?"  Henley asked.

Blank.

It took seconds for Naomi to talk on the other line.

" I'm sorry Henley, I really want to help you but things aren't just as easy here in Elite City,"  Naomi said.

Henley sighed.

" Okay, if you really can't help me with the surgery, how about you buy this medicine for me? under your name?"

Henley begged.

"Okay, I'll try,"  Naomi said.

Actually, Naomi isn't that bitch rich type of girl. She somehow has a heart. Perhaps her only fault was she had not been honest with what she really felt towards him, but at least now she's going to help him. Henley had seen hope.

Meet me at the city gate.

Naomi texted her. That was their agreement. He will meet her there and she will hand him the medicine he needed which Naomi had bought under her name. He was lucky too that she shelled out his own money for that.

Sorry, for the mine didn't pay you fairly. I'll buy the medicine for you instead, I'll pay for it.

Naomi messages him.

Fair enough. At least he doesn't have a debt to her, besides he worked hard in their mine. He deserves the pay.

Naomi asked her to meet at a time when the surroundings were all quiet, and the residents must have tucked into bed already to avoid conflict. Henley agreed. He was relieved when in the midst of the dusty gate entrance he saw Naomi's figure, sneaking out on her black hoodie. She rushed to him and quickly handed him the medicine he needed. Everything was supposed to go smoothly when a blaring horn suddenly sounded at the back of them. It was from a luxurious car whose headlights were blinding. It was difficult at first for Henley to see who was in it if the man inside did not speak. It was Drex, Naomi's brother.

He gets out of the car, glaring at Henley.

"What have you got from my sister huh?"  Drex muttered.

Naomi tried to stop him but to no avail.

Drex swings his arms hitting Henley's jaw. He tried to grab the medicine away from Henley's grip. Henley wrestled. He punched him back.

"Leave now, Henley, quick!"  Naomi shouted.

But at just when Henley was about to run, the guards of Elite City came. The next thing he knew he was locked in the jail. Theft, that was his case. Drex accused him of stealing in the drug store in Elite City.

"There's no way that lowly man can afford to buy that medicine! Besides it's exclusive for the Elite residents!"

The words of Drex still ring fresh in his mind. At that moment, he was waiting for Naomi to step up and tell them the truth but she didn't. Fear, and perhaps self-preservation, were her reasons why she didn't tell them the truth.

Henley spends months of hellish life in jail. He was waiting for a miracle that would let him out of there, yeah, for that's what he needed at the moment. Now, that he had gone down to the bottom of society, a miracle is what he need to turn his life around for being a prisoner was worst than being a commoner. Now, in this society that only favors the Elite, he had become the trash of it. He doesn't care anyway, he's used to a f** up life anyway, the only reason why he wanted to get out of jail was his grandmother. Every day he would wonder who was taking care of his grandmother now that he was locked up here. Then, one day, his wonderings were answered when one of his neighbors visited him and told him that his grandmother had passed away.

Hearing such news, Henley felt like the world had crumbled to his feet, and his in torment and in anguish and great resentment for its biases towards him.

Gripping hard on the steel bars, with gritting teeth and teary eyes he swore he'll never be the same person back then, he swore he'll get back to those who made his life difficult.

Just one shot! One shot in life, that's all I'm asking. No! I just don't want to be a resident of Elite City, but I want to own the entire Red Coast Country!

Henley begged to heaven.

Later that night he fall asleep with that impossible desire in his heart, yet when he woke up, he wasn't expecting that the miracle he was waiting would arrive.

[You've got a system! 100 Million dollars was deposited in your account! Spend it in 3 days to grow your money!]

Spend in 3 days to grow my money? Is this even true? The usual is you need to save your money, to invest it, for it to grow but here you need to spend it to grow! What the hell?

Henley slapped himself to check if he was even dreaming. And he confirmed he was not when his bank called him to confirm the 100 million dollars deposited in his account.

Oh sh**!

Of course! I want this money to grow but what if this is just a prank that after I spend it, then there's none?

Henley thinks.

Anyway! This is the one shot I'm waiting for! I'll go get this!
