Richard and Fiona slipped out of Maxwell’s hospital room as quietly as possible, their movements careful, as though the tension between them and Katherine might erupt at any moment. The air inside the room was thick with tension. Emma, remained the defiant figure, insisted on staying, claiming it was for Maxwell’s sake, though everyone could see it was just as much for her own.

The corridor was quiet, except for the hum of fluorescent lights and the shuffle of nurses’ shoes. Richard and Fiona settled onto the benches just outside the door, the kind designed more for purpose than comfort. Fiona sat with her arms folded tightly across her chest, her lips pressed into a thin line and a disapproving look.

“He couldn’t wait, could he? Emma was in and out of the hospital, and he’s off playing romantic games with the first woman who catches his eye,”Fiona said after a long silence, her voice low and sharp.

Richard sighed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. “Fiona, you’re bei

Alfred felt a knot tighten in his stomach as he approached, his eyes scanning the scene. Officers moved purposefully, their postures tense. The gravity of the situation was heavy.“Hold it right there,” barked a uniformed officer as Alfred neared the yellow tape that blocked off the area. “I’m a member of the clan,” Alfred said firmly, his voice steady but low.The officer seemed unimpressed, stepping forward as if to block him. Before the situation could escalate, a commanding voice cut through the air. “Let him through,” he said.Alfred turned to see Detective Harper, a senior investigator and a longstanding clan member, walk toward them. The room was as silent as the grave. Alphonse Quentin's mansion’s grand dining hall. The table was a masterpiece of dark oak, stretching across the room like a battlefield waiting for bloodshed. Around it sat seven men and all belonging to the Silver Crescent Clan, they were supposed to be bound by lineage and loyalty to the clan but torn apart by their individual ambition.Lenox stood at the head of the table, his presence commanding every eye in the room. The chandelier above reflected off the silver crescent pin on his lapel, a symbol of his claim to leadership. He had inherited this mansion from his late father, the former patriarch, but the fact that he had four of the guards murdered after killing his own father and poisoning Maxwell was now known to the clan, had caused it to be splintered. Emma Hawthorne sat by the window of her hospital room, sunlight streaming through the glass and casting patterns on the floor. The weeks spent within these four walls had given her too much time to think, too much time to replay the choices that led her here. She was ready to leave, yet the weight of her circumstances made it difficult to truly feel free. The sharp sound of a knock at the door broke through her thoughts. Dr. Melvin, the doctor in charge of her recovery, entered first, followed closely by Dr Grant, her therapist. Both wore practiced smiles that seem to usually to put patients at ease."Good morning, Emma," Dr. Melvin greeted, his tone calm and steady."Good morning, Doctor, Dr. Grant," she replied, managing a polite smile, deep down she had to look her best so she gave one even though it wasn't genuine.Dr. Grant stepped closer, clipboard in hand. "We’re here to check on you and assess your progress. How have you been feeling lately?" She asked.Emma paused, her fi

She thought to herself. A connection that had been tight enough to bring them to the point of marriage. She pushed the door open and was met with the sound of the monitors and the antiseptic smell in the air. Maxwell lay still on the bed. He brought a certain calm as she looked at him despite the storm in the depths of her mind. She reached the bed side, sat down in the chair and held his hand in hers. That seemed to bring her a moment of temporary comfort. Just being alone with him, alone in a quiet room. But the fear lingered in her mind. What if Emma was coming back? What if she wanted to g

The car ride home from the hospital was quiet. There was a silence that made itself extra heavy on Emma's soul. She sat in the backseat, her head leaning against the cool glass of the car window. Her parents, Richard and Fiona looked at one another from time to time, yet said little, picked up on her state of mind as they observed she was lost in thought.By the time they reached their mansion ,Emma hesitated, her fingers stroking the handle of the door. She stared at the mansion before her, its well kept gardens and tall pillars once symbols of everything she thought she wanted. Now, they felt cold and unwelcoming, a reflection of the emptiness she felt inside her."Emma, darling," her mother, in the front passenger seat and called her name as she turned to look at her. “Come inside. You have had quite the day and all you want to do is lie down, trust me," she said.“I’m fine here,” Emma murmured, her voice barely audible. “Darling, please, you’ll feel better once you’re insi

Reflections from the morning sun poured in through the tall windows of the dining room, light shone across the wooden dining table. The room was very still, except for the occasional sound of cutlery and the gentle rustling of paper as Marcus turned a page in his newspaper. For Alfred, the calmness seemed temporary, The current state of leadership of the clan left little room for relaxation, even over breakfast. His mind kept going through strategies and maneuvers, the idea of Lenox's treachery forged each step of his thought. The serenity was shattered by the sound of a gunshot and an echo reverberating through the walls of the house.Marcus was startled and his hand jerked, which made the butter knife drop on the table. “What in the world?” he exclaimed.Alfred’s instincts kicked in immediately. Alfred left the meeting room shortly after finishing his glass of bourbon. He touched the stop button for the elevator, his mind still working out the details of plan he presented to Liam. The door creaked softly and he walked through, and pressed in the button for the fourth floor. The journey was brief, however, it already took back his thoughts to the tasks ahead. The fourth floor was more quiet than others. It held rooms for solitude and quiet contemplation or in most cases sleep. There was a room at the end of the corridor, which Alfred or his father used. Marcus, usually used it at night on account of their nature of work. The Silver Crescent Clan headquarters made certain it's most important members were comfortable and provided facilities with which needs were addressed. Lenox stood at the edge of the warehouse, his sharp eyes scanning the crates stacked neatly before him. He stroked the smooth, shiny surface of an assault rifle which he just picked up. The object was like a piece of art and a weapon. Testing its weight, he held it to shoulder level, peered down the barrel, and nodded, with a happy grin."Good work, Gerald. The quality is exceptional," Lenox said, as he dropped the rifle, and put it back into the crate.Gerald, laughed upon receiving the praise. “Only the best, sir. I verified that all components passed inspection requirements before it arrived at me," he replied very pleased with himselfLenox patted Gerald on the shoulder and nodded in agreement. “You’ve outdone yourself. Let the men distribute this crate amongst themselves, and the rest to the mercenaries when they arrive, we’ll need to be ready,” he instructed.“And Gerald, you’ve earned some time off. Take the rest of the day for yourself. You’ve done well, ”Lenox added, his tone

The meeting had dragged on longer than Maxwell anticipated. Once all the finalities were wrapped up, he stood by the massive oak door, his dark eyes roaming the room as the members of the silver crescent clan were dismissed. Every one of them made a brief nod as a mark of respect before leaving.“Alfred,” Maxwell called without turning around. His voice was calm but carried the authority of a leader not to be questioned."Yes, sir," his friend answered with a smile as he and he Father were the only ones left in the room with Maxwell."Send word to Lenox. Tell him my terms are clear. I will see him, but, only in the Clan's headquarters, nowhere else," Maxwell continued.Alfred gave a respectful bow. “Understood, sir. Maxwell relaxed in his seat and finished the last piece of pancake on his plate. The warmth of the morning sun, poured over the table in the dinning. Katherine, was sitting beside him, she moved her coffee mug, and gazed up at the ceiling. They hadn’t spoken much that morning, but the silence wasn’t entirely uncomfortable, it was more like the calm before a storm.A silent knock on the door was heard before Jackson came into the room, as always, dressed in black. Behind him, a group of guards carried items they recovered from Maxwell’s former apartment. One by one climbed on the stairs to put the boxes into one of the guest rooms. Jackson, however, lingered behind, his demeanor was however a bit hesitant."Sir may I have a word with you, in private," Jackson said calmly, but in a way that wasn't obvious. Light reflections streamed through the curtains in her room while Emma drank her coffee and the thoughts of Maxwell filled her head. When she went to see him in the clinic, previously, she had been unwelcomed and uncomfortable by Katherine's overprotective yet polite presence. It hadn’t gone well. But she could not let that be the reason she'd stay away from the man she loved. With a renewed determination, Emma dressed carefully, choosing a soft blue blouse and jeans, casual but polished. She got her hair into a tidy ponytail and reached for her car keys before leaving the house. Maxwell had a soft spot for small, kind gestures, and so she stopped first at the farmer's market to get him some of his favorite fruits. The market was bustling with activity when she arrived. She walked around the stalls, her former memories clinging to her, dragging her back to a time Maxwell would talk about the juiciest strawberries or crunchiest apples. She picked out a box of strawberries, a clust

But Gerald being taken wasn’t the problem , the real threat lay in what Gerald knew. For the past weeks, Lenox had built his faction’s financial wealth with him as well as a network of plans and resources that had them in a more advantageous position than Maxwell and his allies. Liam pulled the SUV up to the rear of the compound, the sound of the engine replaced by silence of midnight. Behind him, two of Alfred's men opened the back of the vehicle and carried Gerald’s body onto their shoulders. They had knocked him unconscious as he continued to struggle in their way to Marcus' house."Come on," Liam whispered and his voice was low so as not to wake Marcus up by that time. They moved him behind trees through the shadows of the compound, their movements were calculated , their only source of light was the moon but that was okay as they recognized the compound off heart. Liam opened the large wooded door that led to the basement, a place that was either used for storage or activities they didn't want others to be aware of. As they entered, they found only one light bulb was lit. At the center of the spacious but almost dark room was Alfred who sat behind a desk at the center of the room, calm and deliberate as ever. Upon the desk lay a bottle of whiskey
