Chapter Thirty-seven

Emma’s heart raced in her bedroom, her mind consumed by doubt and anticipation. She had made a pact with a mysterious man in a shadowy alley just an hour ago. Their agreement: rendezvous in the same alley once her task was completed.

Emma had cunningly excused herself from the dining table, claiming she needed an early night. Now, as she waited for the rest of the household to retire to their rooms, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something had gone wrong.

As the clock ticked closer to their appointed meeting time, she couldn’t suppress her restlessness any longer. She silently crept out of her room, making sure not to make a sound that would alert anyone to her secret meeting.

The streets outside were shrouded in darkness, but she knew the way well. She slipped through the front door, her breath held in anticipation.
