Chapter 7

"We were separated into three teams for this one. One team played the role of armed robbers, another played the role of hostages, and the last were policemen. I got the role of an armed robber but Stacy… You remember Stacy, right?"

Derek nods to that. Stacy was one of Catherine's friends who worked in the same company with her. She always mentioned her to him every now and then.

"Okay, so Stacy who got the role of an hostage wanted to switch roles and I agreed to it. To be honest, I didn't expect her to tie me up so tight that it ended up bruising my body."

The details she gave was too good not to be true. It was as if she already prepared her story before now that Derek didn't even know what to say to go against it.

He kept looking at her like she was just mincimg around with words and his look at her must have made her uncomfortable.

"I know you don't believe me but you can always call Stacy to ask her. She'll tell you what happened," Catherine adds that in her defence.

"That won't be a problem," he waved that off to calm her down. "I still want to know about the marks that look like bites. What happened there?"

"We went camping last night. There was a lot of insects around. It's what got me in this position."

"Insects? Where exactly did you camp?" he asks. "You know what? Scratch that. I hope you're fine now."

That was his cue to end the conversation already. He didn't feel totally convinced with her explanation but he was trying to avoid her feeling sad about him not trusting her.

All of the evidences pointing toward the possibility of her cheating on him were glaring but there wasn't enough to back them up.

"I'm fine. But I'm exhausted. Can I go to sleep now? I have to be at the company tomorrow."

He nods in agreement. "Yeah, it's late. Goodnight, baby."

"Goodnight," she responds with a nod before laying back down on the bed and then drifting off to sleep.

All the while, he kept watching her face while wondering about everything that she told him. It didn't sound like something he could believe and he would be lying to himself if he said she could be trusted.

Was she lying? Or was he just over thinking about everything? He did not even know what to believe at this point because it was all too complicated for him.

"I have to look into this. I'm sure there's more than enough explanation to what's going on," he tells himself in a low tone as he stares into space.

There was a way he could look into this without arousing the suspicion of Catherine, his wife. Perhaps by checking in with her place of work.

One of those he knew he could check with was Nadia, Catherine's closest colleague, the one he had called after he was unable to reach Catherine.

"I need to be at her workplace tomorrow. It's the only way I clarify all of this bullshit."

Finally, he decided it was time he got a good night sleep while hoping that all he heard from Catherine was actually true and not just some lie she contorted to cover up for her deeds.

Derek woke up as early as 5 in the morning to get ready for the new day. He hadn't gotten the best of sleep but his mind was already wired to get set for work.

Catherine was still asleep when he got up from the bed and in order not to disturb her, he tiptoed his way out of the room. He made sure to pick his phone up on the way.

He headed straight to the kitchen where he intended to cook a light breakfast for himself and his wife.

As he stood inside the kitchen while racking his head to come up with an idea of what to prepare for them, his phone suddenly beeped, coming to light in his hand.

He realized it was a text message and from the look of things, it was a message that looked like a spam because it was sent from an unknown online.

Out of curiosity, he opened up the message and that was when he happened to read the content:

'You're such a dimwit. You can't even see your wife's infidelity happening right in front of you. Wonder how you even got with her in the first place.'
