Chapter 10. System's origin.

Maryanne looked at Bryan who looked back at her.

“Hey, why do you keep staring at me? You do know it's creeping me out.”

Bryan who heard Maryanne's question started to think as fast as he could for an answer. He could not say anything about the mission, he needed to explain why he was staring as something else.

“I'm sorry I could not stop staring because of your beauty.” Bryan tried to say one of the lines he had heard from a movie once, he said this without showing anything on his face. Seeing Bryan's earnest gaze as he said she was a beauty, Maryanne couldn't help but blush.

“I already know I'm a beauty but still, staring too much is not good.” Maryanne said with pride. Bryan only sighed inwardly for successfully fooling Maryanne. Just then he received an urgent message from the system.

«Ding!

Before Maryanne could say anymore, Bryan took hold of her hand and started walking back to the classroom.

“Hey! Who said you could touch my hand!”

“You're right, we will never make it on time if I just hold your hand.” Bryan then picked up Maryanne in a princess carry and started running back to the classroom. Without even apologizing for his sudden before, he ran off towards the back of the school. He found a secluded place and before he could even sit and rest, he heard the system's message.

[WELCOME HOST TO THE PAST. HOST WILL NOW BE SENT INTO THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND OF THE DESIGNATED TARGET, THUS EXPERIENCING THE LIFE OF THE TARGET.]

[TARGET: GENERAL MAXIMUS DECIMUS AURELIUS. FORMER WIELDER OF THE MILITARY SYSTEM. YEAR: 180AD]

Four years has gone in just a blink of an eye and yet we're still at war with Germania.

“General Maximus, the Caesar requests your presence.” Namor saluted as he finished.

Yeah, I got promoted to General when Amphyhitron met with misfortune as an arrow found its way to his throat two years ago, I took over his position and since then the tides had turned to our favor as Rome was winning.

I saw Father atop his horse alongside other nobles.

“Father, you sent for me.” I said and gave a slight bow.

“Germania has mustered all its troops from far and near, they mean to end this war once and for all.” He said and his face was gloomy.

I merely smiled.

“You find this situation amusing my son?” He asked visibly annoyed.

“Forgive me Father.” I wiped off the smiles from my face and became all business as I continued.

“But the Assyrians have long fled from the battlefield as they've suffered heavy loss when I charged into their lines and slaughtered half their troops. The news of Germania mustering troops from far and near are merely rumors to make us quake with fear. And besides, if they're really mustering troops, then I suggest they come, the more the merrier. Rome will win, I assure you.” I said with all seriousness. I had indeed slaughtered so many Germania soldiers and Assyrians that I was practically known as the god of war. I got more powerful and I just couldn't stop. And now, I plan to swallow up the entire Germania army before sundown.

“I have faith in you my son, Rome and I are depending on you.” Father said but I still saw doubts in his eyes.

“I won't let you and the people of Rome down, by sundown, we shall be feasting and celebrating our victory.” I said with all seriousness.

I turned around and sought after Quintus, I needed to end this quickly so I could complete my mission and leave this timeline.

The demon wolf whom I now call Ramiel has already told me of my true mission, and that is to kill Commodus before he became Caesar. I am already powerful enough to destroy Rome, I can't wait any longer.

I met Quintus tending to his horse.

“Quintus, I mean to end this war before sundown.” I said to him.

He looked so puzzled.

“My lord, how do you plan to do to that?” he asked confused. But I wasn't going to tell him as I didn't trust him.

“Just hold them off, I'll do the rest. I want you to start the attack. Muster the men, I shall speak to them.” I said and left him without him the chance to voice out his doubts.

He called to me when he's completed the task, it was time to motivate the men.

“SONS OF ROME, MEN OF ROME. WE'VE BEEN TOLD THAT WE NEITHER FEAR MAN NOR gods, THEY ARE RIGHT, FOR WE DO NOT FEAR EVEN HADES NOR ZEUS. LOOK BEFORE YOU AT THE HORDES OF GERMANIA, THEY MOCK US, THEY MAKE JEST OF US BY SETTING UP THEIR RAMPS AND SHELTERS BESIDE US. TODAY WE SHALL CRUSH THEM PERMANENTLY, TODAY WE SHALL IMMORTALIZE OUR NAMES ON THE LIPS OF OUR PEOPLE, TODAY WE SHALL DO THAT WHICH SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE. DO NOT LOOK AT THEM AS SOLDIERS OR MEN, FOR THEY ARE SHEEP WAITING TO BE CUT DOWN. NOW PICK UP YOUR SWORDS, NOCK YOUR ARROWS INTO YOUR BOW. TODAY WE SHALL TURN THEM INTO BUTTERED FLESH.” I looked at their faces and I saw determination and killing intents.

I decided to finish up

“NOW GO, AND LET ACHILLES HIMSELF WITNESS TRUE MEN OF GODLY STRENGTH. WHAT SAY YE SONS OF ROME?!” I shouted.

They all stood with their spears and swords and knocked it against their shields while chanting.

“AHUU! AHUU!! AHUU!!!”

I turned around to Quintus

“Hold the line no matter what.” I said to him with a straight face.

“With my life my Lord.” he bowed.

Namor brought my horse at that moment and I mounted on it.

I rode toward south of the battlefield, alongside me were the Black Dragon Squad.

We rode to the rear of the Germania ranks without them knowing.

I planned to wipe them off before sundown.

I looked at them and couldn't help the evil grin on my face.

I didn't see this Germania soldiers as men, I saw them as points to level up. To me, this war was a means to level up and become a formidable figure.

                         *

Half an hour later, I could see arrows flying and heard the clanking of swords.

“lord Maximus, the battle is fierce and Quintus seems to be holding his ground as you ordered.” Namor said.

We were simply hiding at the rear of the Germania soldiers, waiting for the right time to strike.

“He has to.” I said and turned to Namor.

“For my plan to work, the battle has to become more fierce so the Germania soldiers will sorely focus on fighting rather than being vigilant against an ambush.” I then turned back to the scene of the battle ahead.

“Half an hour more and we will attack.” I said.

“Yes my Lord.” Namor then crept away.

The battle had just turned into a bloody survival of the fittest and Germania was about to send the last of its ranks, that's when I knew its time to act.

I stood and mounted my horse.

“This is it men, time to exterminate the Germanic pests.”

“MOUNT YOUR HORSES, UNSHEATHE YOUR SWORDS AND LET'S RIDE OUT TO VICTORY. ”

“AHUU AHUU AHUU.”

And so we rode out, down towards the Germania soldiers.

Bloody and messy as it was, we pressed on and fought hard.

*CLINK*

*CLANK*

*SLASH*

One could hear the blood curdling screams of the Germania soldiers as I ran through them with my sword.

I felt such ecstasy as I've never felt before as I fought... No, as I slaughtered the Germania soldiers.

Dismembered body parts, burnt flesh and deathly chilly scream filled the entire battlefield.

I looked ahead about 20 klicks from where the battle was raging and there sat the Germania ruler atop his horse.

“Let's end this war, once and for all.” I said and charged towards his direction, giving little or no care about the two hundred elite soldiers guarding him.

I ran towards them like a mad man, cutting down any soldier that tried to stop me. I was so happy and excited as heads, limbs and body parts flew around me whenever my sword meets its target.

I stopped when I was just a few feet away from his elite guards. I looked at him.

“King of Germania, hear me. I am Maximus Aurelius of Rome, son of Caesar Marcus Augustus Aurelius and General of the Roman army. I offer you the chance to keep your life. All you have to do is order your soldiers to retreat and you will pledge allegiance to Rome.” I said to him. Part of me hoped he would consider and accept defeat, but another part of me just wants to continue the exciting battle.

He didn't even give a reply to me, he merely glanced at his general and I knew he's decided to fight it out.

“Your funeral, not mine.” I whispered and charged forward before the General could even give out the order.

When I began to fight the elite guards, I was surprised as they seemed so weak. Why surround yourself with this useless bums.

I cut down every one of them in less than two minutes.

I approached the King and his general leisurely.

“You threw away the chance to live. Don't blame me for what's about to happen next.”

The general that was so dumbstruck finally reacted but he was too late, with a swipe of my sword, he jerked a bit, dropped his sword, then his head shifted and fell. I kicked the headless body away before it could fall so as not to stain me with his foul blood.

I turned to the King and smiled.

“Oh yes, where were we?” I said and my grin grew wider.

“Shall I cut off your arms first or should I just burn you with fire and watch you dance to death?”

He gaped at me in shock.

“You're so evil. You must be the devil incarnate.” He said, and I smelled great fear in him. I merely smiled.

“Actually, I'm the god of war.” I then turned around, backing him, bent and picked up a burning tree branch beside me.

“Now Burn.” I tossed the branch at his greasy leather sandal which immediately started to burn. Soon his tonic and cape were on fire, he screamed and trashed around, I watched the scene in silence and smiled excitedly.

When he fell and stopped moving. I knew he was dead, I turned around only to see Quintus and many Roman soldiers gaping at me with shock and fear.

I didn't even think about it.

“Quintus, send word to the Caesar, tell him the war is over and Germania is no more.” I said and strolled out from the scene.

“Y..Yes..Yes My lord.” he struggled to find his voice.

I cared less for his stuttering, my next target was definitely Commodus, and I'm gonna find him.
