Eriane took a step forward and did a backflip, landing on her toes like a ballerina. She spun around and glanced at her mother, Gabrielle, who had her nose buried in a book. They were on the beach, and Gabrielle was sunbathing. There was a beach house next to the beach, on the other side.

“Damn, this is great!” Eriane squealed, running off and jumping into the water. She swam further out and then hurried back to her spot.

“Eriane, you’ll get all dirty from the sand again,” Gabrielle said, glancing at Eriane before returning to her book. “Anyways, pass me the drink.”

Eriane nodded, scurrying away as she brushed past Timtat, who was sitting next to them with a book in his hand. His expression screamed, ‘Save me! I don’t read books,’ as he watched her go.

Eriane chuckled at his misery and took the drink from the tray. “Mom made you read it, so you should do that.”
