"8 of us, we were separated from experts after the reopening and we happened to miss everyone along the way."

"And then you got attacked." Artemis said.

"The attack was what caused the tumble in the first place. Unfortunately, I was caught up under the rocks. Coach seemed to be okay."

"Yeah, he left you." Maks let out dryly. "Yep, the least he could have done was get you out of there but he didn't."

The hair on their scalps rose at the sound of bats screeching. The noise was reverberating and horrendous. Maks quieted. Voices could be heard in the midst of rushing waters.

"That's what I heard?"

"Sounds like it is coming from the top. Quick, we can get out while it lasts."

Harriet shifted on her good leg. They made an effort to follow the sound of its voice.

Artemis lagged under Harriet's weight. They found a crack of light under the underpass.

"That's it?" Harriet said and lagged. She let herself down on a rock, massaging her leg, at least it wasn't cold anymore. Just too hot.
