Jin smiled and raised his hand to stop her from talking further. He stepped to the side and showed them the door behind him. “Come in!”
He then looked at Jorge to confirm, and he received a nod of approval. Together, they went back inside the hospital as dusk was upon them. The last one to walk back was Jin. He rested the bat on his shoulder, and at a steady pace, joined them.
Once they were in, they shut the doors behind them. The girl with the emerald eyes thanked them and stood in front of Jin. He looked at her, confused. “Did you forget something?”
She shook her head as she fidgeted with her fingers. “As the warden’s daughter, I want to be the one to inform the father whose son we left behind…”
Jorge heard the girl and approached them. “I should be present…”
He looked in Kroll’s direction and sighed. “That guy is already a little unstable…”
Jorge and Jin joined the girl to break the news about his son. They approached him and swiftly asked him to move to some place away from the others. Although he was suspicious, he accepted. They went through a room down the corridor.
Jorge felt a little uncomfortable in that place. There was a table in the middle with a human figure under it and a sheet on top. Right after they entered, Jorge approached it and placed his hands close to the figure’s head.
The others simply waited for him, when Kroll broke the silence in a soft voice so as not to disturb Jorge’s prayer. “That was his wife…”
When he finished, he went back to the group. Jin looked at his sorrowful eyes. “I can help you bury her if you want…”
“Thank you. I waited for my son and his wife to first get here. Lily was with them, but she somehow ended up with you. Tell me what happened later…”
Jin nodded and turned his gaze at the girl with the emerald eyes. “Your turn…”
“Y-Yes. Mr. Kroll sir, I…”
“Is my son dead?”
They looked at him, surprised.
He scoffed at their reactions. “What? I recognized those guys’ uniforms from when I visited my son. If they are here and he’s not, they either abandoned him and ran or he died. If it’s the first, I’ll kill them here and now and get it over with.”
Kroll then looked at the girl, waiting for a response. She trembled and her words came out shaky. “T-The place was overrun. There were no survivors.”
Kroll stared into her eyes. “I believe you tell the truth, but I don’t believe for a second those words. Someone must’ve told you that…”
Surprised, the girl’s widened. “Barton… Barton told us!”
Jin got himself involved. “Let me guess. He’s the one we cut loose…”
The girl nodded. “That guy is indeed dangerous and after the world flipped, so did his mind.”
Jorge pondered over what she said. “Do you think he’ll come back?”
She shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. It’s possible…”
Jorge thought about it and turned to Jin. “Starting tonight, we’ll rotate and keep watch. We no longer worry only about the corpses!”
Jin, without sparing a single second, answered immediately. “I’ll take the first shift.”
The girl, having decided, spoke up. “I’ll join you. Barton is my responsibility. If he tries anything…”
Several minutes passed, and Kroll had said nothing for a while. Jorge and Jin sighed and looked at Kroll, worried he might do something. Jin, unable to keep it in, uttered. “What are you thinking?”
“What’s to think? Tomorrow morning I’ll go check for myself…”
Jorge wanted to stop him, but Jin didn’t let him. “I’ll come with you. Go and rest now.”
Taken aback by Jin’s willingness, Kroll refused. “What are you talking about? Coral will kill us… Besides, you don’t owe me anything.”
“I’ll talk with my mom tonight before my shift. I’m sure I can reason with her. She must’ve been in your shoes before I got here.”
Jorge chuckled. “You have no idea… Until you showed up, she caused all kinds of chaos trying to get out and look for you…”
Jin didn’t say anything out loud, but he secretly smiled in his heart. The girl who delivered the news remained silent. The whole time, she stared at the floor. She felt unable to raise her head and look Kroll in the eyes afterwards.
After they got out of the room, Jin went to Coral and spoke with her. At first, as they expected, she threw a tantrum and attacked Jorge and Kroll, but because her hand hurt, she held back her slaps. After she calmed down, she agreed reluctantly.
Once the dark veil covered the world, the patrols with weapons in their hands made rounds around the hospital. Jin took the first shift as planned. The girl with the emerald eyes accompanied him.
Maybe a few minutes passed, and Jin chuckled, which surprised the girl. “I’m Jin, by the way!”
She blushed and looked the other way. “That’s right. We didn’t introduce ourselves after everything that’s happened. “My name is Rena. Nice to meet you, Jin!”
With the bat on his shoulder, they walked the rounds for a few hours until the next shift replaced them.
The following morning, Jin met with Kroll at the front of the hospital. Kroll had a few white hairs on his brown beard and hair. He narrowed his blue eyes, wrinkles stretching at the corner of his eyes. Even though his shoulders were broad, he maintained a rectangular shape, which comprised muscles and fatty parts.
Jin and Kroll took the first step when they heard the door behind them, creaked ajar. A female voice became audible seconds later. “I’m coming too!”
Kroll looked back and saw Rena. “Definitely not!”
“Definitely yes! This, is also my responsibility as the daughter of the warden…”
She approached them. Her voice came out at a low volume. “I can’t look you in the eyes otherwise!”
Kroll admired that trait of hers. He shook his head once he realized he couldn't stop her. When Kroll caved, Jin nodded smilingly, which irritated him. “What are you smiling at?”
Jin chuckled. “Don’t worry about it. Let’s get going!”
Hey all. Thank you for joining me on this adventure. I'd love to hear your thoughts at this point. Once again, thank you for supporting this story.
Jin and the others descended from the peak where the hospital rested. Colby, once like a living organism, is now a ghost town of tales and myths. The moment they entered, the stench of death that surrounded the town like a fog bombarded them. Jin couldn’t smell it, but he acted as if he did and copied the other two who were puking their guts outs. After several minutes passed, they got used to it, or rather tolerated it, and they were finally fit to travel. Not long into town, and growls crept from the sides and then in front of them. Jin readied his bat whilst the other two brought their guns out, but before they could fire a single shot, Jin swung his bat fiercely, smashed their heads, and floored the undead. Blood painted the ground crimson. Kroll and Rena looked at one another in disbelief. They were unaware
As the sun rose, and its dim light showered the land. Rena stretched and flexed her slender body in the back seat. Even though it was a big vehicle, she found it hard to move around. With her eyes half open, she saw Jin’s figure jumping off the hood of the jeep. She fluttered her eyelids open and got up. Although she was drowsy, she heard growls coming from the distance. Rena, worried, looked out the window and saw a few figures meshing with that of Jin’s. Without wasting time, she grabbed her gun and went after Jin. She sighed in relief when the young man bashed their heads in. Rena slowed down her pace and walked towards him, all the while keeping a lookout for any more popping up. As she got closer, Rena was about to call out to him, when he saw him getting down and taking their skulls apart. For sure, the act
Rena led Jin and Kroll towards the next room, away from the cafeteria. Jin looked back and in the corner of his eyes, he caught a figure speeding in the opposite direction, until it disappeared. Because of how fast things happened, the young man thought, his mind played tricks. Soon Rena stopped in front of chained doors. Without a key, there was no other way to go through, and Jin’s bat was good against skulls, but it can’t break chains. Kroll turned to Rena. “Are you sure we are going the right way?” The girl nodded. “Yes. If we go through here, we can go around the cafeteria. But I don’t remember seeing chains the last time I was here… Someone must’ve put them after we left…” Her words confused both Jun and Kroll. “What do you mean? How is that possible?”
The constant growling deafened the beat from their hearts. When the zombies surrounded them, they blocked their only way out. The teenage inmates were in and out of consciousness, and there was no other way than to carry them. Kroll shot at them until he emptied his clip, but a few bullets weren’t enough to clear a path. Jin slapped the teens back into consciousness. “Get up! Rise and shine, sleeping beauties…” Rena stared at him, confused. Yes, they were hindrances, but he didn’t have to hit them. To their surprise, Jin dropped the guy he was carrying and rested the trustee bat on his shoulder. He stood in front of them and smirked. “I’ll clear a path, so make a run for it when you can…” He spun the bat a few times and charged ahead. With every swing, a smashed head sent blood flying in different directions. He
A cloud of dust obstructed visibility in the rear-view mirror as Kroll sped away from the Juvenile Detention Facility. Meanwhile, Jin held on to the hood of the Jeep with every ounce of strength he could muster. With every vibration, he lost his grip slightly each time. Once they had created plenty of distance between them and the undead, Kroll brought the vehicle to a halt. Jin’s fingers were stiff and bled profusely. His restoration skill got to work fast, and his wounds healed after a while. He chose not to disclose this information, therefore he didn’t mention this to anyone and let them wrap his hands with a piece of cloth. He considered himself lucky that the nerves got damaged when he died, or he’d be writhing in pain by now. While Rena mended Jin’s injuries, Kroll stayed in his seat and checked the condit
While Jin and the others left to find Kroll’s son, back at the hospital, things grew wry. Jorge was losing control of his people when more and more undead were breaching their defenses. Some didn’t even take their patrols seriously, which led to people dying when undead wandered inside. When the word got out that they were running low on food and water, morale plummeted. When they tried to make a few runs into Colby town, the undead cut them off. People became visibly scared and hungry. Coral tried her best to support Jorge and his decisions and subside the worries of the rest, but to no avail. As the days passed and there was still no sign of Jin and the others, people became more frightened and groups formed one after the other that went against Jorge's leadership. Some even openly challenged him. “They are not
Growl! There must have been four or five undead, one after the other, walking at a steady and sluggish pace next to Jin and the others. They kept going through the stiff group, attacking no one. Growl! Once they passed, a teenager sighed in relief. Soon after, the other followed in the same mannerism. What he didn’t expect, though, was that teen’s arrogant outburst. “That’s right, keep going, you mindless freaks!” Jin pleaded with him to keep it down, without success. Kroll, who was the closest to him, grabbed his hand and pulled him towards him. The teen forced his hand out of Kroll’s and maniacally shook it at the undead, who walked away. “Yeah!” He celebrated, laughed out loud and shouted at the top of his lungs. “Get
Jorge’s face twitched. His hoarse voice forcefully burst out of his throat. “Everyone, go back inside!” One by one, he visited the people mending their defenses. Right after they finished, he tapped them on the shoulder. “Nice work. Go inside!” Once he went back in, he stationed more guards as lookouts to keep him informed of the situation. Inside the hospital, the people shivered when they heard the news. Frightened, they searched for rooms to barricade, in case the undead broke through their barricades. Jorge, though, called one guard for a strategy meeting. The corridors of the hospital, for the first time in a while, were clear of people. Only Jorge, a guard he called, and Coral remained. Those who could go up the stairs went to the second floor, whilst the older folk grabbed the rooms they could reach.
