Chapter 12 - Steps

"Mr Benjamin, please!" David's head was lowered to his hips, and hands outstretched in a plea."You must tell me how we have offended you! Should I relinquish the services of the customers who also joined in falsely accusing you? Done. Perhaps I shall fire some of our tellers who watched without doing anything as well? If it is what you desire, consider it done!"

The bank tellers; silent non-descript middle-aged men and women, tucked safely behind their granite counters, all turned to their manager in a cold sweat. Maybe minding their business during the commotion hadn't been the best bet after all.

"Now now" Benjamin tried to pacify him, but something sitting at the bottom right of his peripheral vision struck him as odd. When he turned his head to get a better look, the arrangement moved only so much as to sit at the bottom right again.

"Am I having a stroke?" Benjamin thought to himself. After turning his head a few more times, it became clear that the object was not of his external environment, but a permanent presence inside his eyes themselves.

When he focused harder, he could see a string of UPPERCASE blue text and a blinking cursor, straight out of a computer's word processor. The text read: "Skill: Bow Down To Me, Level: 2, Description: A subordinate or second hand to an organization will do your bidding. Status: Active"

He remembered something like this. Task 2. Where the MedHill's CTO had been grovelling before him. Had he activated this skill by clearing that task there? He looked down at David."Will you really do all those things?" Benjamin asked quietly.

"Of course!" David raised his head, his eyes lighting up. But isn't that just because you want my money? Benjamin asked himself. Can the system give him some other sort of hidden influence? He thought of testing this theory, after making the transfer to Amber. It could become very useful.

"There'll be no need for that" Benjamin reassured him. "It's just important that I get this money to her as soon as possible." he continued, referring to Amber."I wanted to ask about that. Isn't this too soon? And I mean, at least the cash has to be broken down into Milestones and Installments-"Amber queried.

Benjamin waved his hand disapprovingly."You know I hate those. And you were the one that showed me we needed to move fast."

"This - isn't exactly what I meant. Did you say $350 million? You mean to send the money for buying the hospital  too?!" Amber squeaked.

"Of course. That was the agreement, wasn't it?" Benjamin said, his eyes twinkling at her.

Amber Stone began to pace back and forth, while also tugging at her hair. It was obvious to her that Benjamin had no real financial education! You don't casually send hundreds of millions as if it were money for a new bike or dinner at a restaurant.

You have to tie it to an asset, a loan, or an LLC first."Uhmm..Uhh" she muttered still restless. "I would have to leave the neurosurgery department and find a replacement. Then I have to approach the board, apply for a pharmacy license, go to Sweden-" her thoughts converted into words sporadically."

"Just breathe" Benjamin advised. And the immense trust he had in her!, she thought. There was no stopping her just disappearing from the face of the earth with his money if she wanted to. She was smitten by that type of character, but he would have to be protected in case of others.

"Okay, okay. We need a company." she said calmly."A company?" muttered Benjamin.

"Yes. I know you're doing this to help your sister and a general noble cause, but a hospital is still a business. Especially one as proficient at quarterly profits as MedHill. And since it's such a large amount, wouldn't it be better to see this as an investment?" Amber explained.

Benjamin thought a little. To make as much money as possible was his goal…"Is it possible to do both? Give my sister the best treatment in the world, and profit in this industry?"

"What are you talking about? Of course, you can. That should be painfully obvious." Shoot, that was too harsh, thought Amber. But she saw Benjamin was still following her words, no hints of offence in his expression."I mean, yes. Think about it. It's because the hospital is the best that it makes money. And Vice Versa." she started.

"But hospitals are avenues for people to receive treatment, no matter their afflictions. It makes me a little uneasy that I'll be owning one that kicks their patients so promptly after deferred payments now that I think about it." Benjamin said.

He's referring to the incident with his sister, I guess he's still stung about that one, Amber thought."We're a private-owned hospital. Our equipment costs millions of dollars, and it's not like the government subsidizes any of it." Amber iterated.

Benjamin was obstinate. David kept watching the conversation silently."But- of course, there are multiple ways around that once we become upper management. We could launch a program for free emergency care, or a heavily subsidized treatment fee for Cancer, Alzheimer's, you name it. We'll bleed money of course, but maybe the public opinion of us would make up for it when we try to expand into other areas." said Amber.

Benjamin nodded happily at this reasoning."Not to mention, if our pharmaceutical trials go according to plan, we'll end up helping millions of people around the globe too. We won't be like those corrupt pharmaceutical companies that jack up the prices of drugs by a 1000%. And still make a killing. Sound good?"

"Amazing." sounded David and Benjamin.

"Wouldn't you want to be updated each time we make progress like this?" Amber asked.

"But, yes." Benjamin affirmed.

"Then, doesn't it make more sense to create a company, or at the very least, an LLC? You could be the President or CEO, and employ me to manage MedHill. You keep the money in the  LLC account. I give you the quarterly reports on MedHill and our progress, and you release the funds whenever you deem it necessary." Amber debated.

"A company, huh?" Benjamin had never really thought about it. Was it unnatural for one person to be holding over 9 digits in personal income? Probably that was why his account got flagged. Lucky for him that Amber was so knowledgeable.

"Just to add, Mr Benjamin" David interrupted "Here at Skaling Bank, we are proud to say we handle over 70% of the country's wealthiest LLC accounts. It would be a minor trifle to set up yours here, and get it up and running within  6 hours."

"And there you have it. What do you think?" Amber asked Benjamin.
