A horror-stricken Amber pulled Benjamin Black away from the crowd of astonished faces and the pallor expressions of Mardo Wormwood and Claire Black.
"What are you thinking?" she asked as they approached one of the ticketing counters. Benjamin didn't respond immediately, his body only moving deliriously when Amber grabbed him, and his eyes still set on WormWood.
“Hmm?” he half-mouthed at her question.
Amber looked around for the Bank Manager. She saw him emerging out of a hidden hallway, laden with paperwork that rose from his hands to above his head, and still not enough to cover that wrinkly crooked smile of his. It was going to rain a payday of commissions for this Skaling Bank Branch.
"We should leave now." Amber put it bluntly. "If you tell the Bank Manager it was just an honest overstep on your part, we can still avoid this. That man will still lose his stake in the bank, and you'll be in the good light."
"What?" That seemed to jolt Benjamin back to reality. "Why would I do that?" he asked seriously. Amber remained silent. Perhaps she had been too quick to judge Benjamin as some white knight. Isn't it the absolute truth that money corrupts even the most crystal clear of hearts?
"This will teach him to shut up" said Benjamin, becoming a little restless at her silence.
"I didn't know you were a man of impulse and careless words, Benjamin." she replied.
"Excuse Me?"
"What about the promise you made to me? Did you really mean to honour that?" she asked.
"Of course, I will! What do you take me for? This is just $20 million. A lot's more where that came from."
"Have you ever owned a cable company, Benjamin?" she asked.
"Hmm? No. Why?"
"This isn't like starting a YouTube channel. First, you need to buy a satellite and launch that into space. Did I say one Satellite? I meant a whole lot. One would set you back about a million dollars."
"O-kay" Benjamin followed.
"Next is content. What are people watching? When are they watching? Once you miraculously figure that out considering the fact that you're new in the industry, you have to start paying for sets, actors, and most importantly, marketing. Of course, Nobody's ever heard of you. Last I heard, Aircable and Dim-Warner paid about $30 million each in marketing in 2022, and an extra $10 during the Superbowl. For one year."
"Uhh...."
"Finally, it'd take nothing short of a world miracle to make any of your money back. What year do you think this is? Nobody's turning on cable when there's N*****x, HBO Max and the entire multiverse of streaming services. Why on earth do you think this man is trying to get the Sports rights? It's the only way Aircable is bound to survive. They must be in dire patches about now."
Benjamin Black closed his eyes and stroked his chin tentatively.
Amber started again: "Not to mention the time you'd lose trying to set up a failing venture in the first place. If you don't end up using the rights in 3 years, it'd just go straight back to auction, flushing $20 million down the metaphorical drain."
"How the hell are you so knowledgeable about the entertainment business?" Benjamin snapped. Amber just shrugged. "It's all public information" she stated.
Benjamin scratched his head and chin again to think. No matter what, that man called Mardo had to suffer. Amber felt some of his hostility."Who are those people, really? she asked.
"They…." said Benjamin uncovering his face "That man, is just simply one of many others, that must pay. Under all circumstances." He turned to Amber again."What if I buy Aircable?"
"I don't think you understand. Although I did say that they were struggling a bit, Aircable is still a huge conglomerate, worth over 2 billion dollars. Their refusal to sell to a rival company would be just out of pride."she clarified.
Benjamin groaned. Was Benjamin really worth exactly the $490 million in his account? thought Amber. $490 million. No more, no less. If he was so dead set on this vendetta, he would've reached out to sell more assets or consult one of his wealthier relatives. But it seems he had none of that.
"I'm not an expert on these kind of things, but isn't revenge about getting the last laugh? I think it should be painfully obvious by now that that man would be the one laughing if you bought into this crap deal.
"I think- you're probably right." Benjamin gave up.
"I know." Amber said playfully.
"It's so hard to believe, so difficult. To think that $500 million is such a small amount of money!" Benjamin cried.
"What?!" retorted Amber.
"I've been too relaxed." Benjamin mused.
"Now, hold on! Remember what you said about the hospital! And your Sister!" Amber interrupted alarmingly."I didn't forget. Manager!" yelled Benjamin.
David, the Bank Manager, had been standing behind them in glee. Waiting for the perfect time to bring down the paperwork, and make it rain money-"At your service, Mr Benja-"
"Apologies, Manager. I will have to forgo the purchase of those rights."
Mardo was down the banking hall, still rattling at the security guards, but turned his head on hearing that statement. David broke into waves of sweat "Are you- Are you absolutely sure, Mr Benjamin? Did I do something wrong?" David questioned.
"Not at all. My interests have just changed at the moment. There is another transaction I'd like to make."
An ordinary transfer was very different from a loan with a mouth-watering interest. David was crestfallen. "And the size of this transfer?" he asked Benjamin.
"About $350 million." said Benjamin. "To this woman." Benjamin nudged his chin to Amber.
Amber turned her head multiple times in surprise. On the other hand, David was wringing his fingers and mentally biting his teeth. It took all he had to stop from screaming. $350 million was more than half of Benjamin's portfolio in Skaling Bank! The golden goose was about to take off!
"Mr Benjamin, please!" David's head was lowered to his hips, and hands outstretched in a plea."You must tell me how we have offended you! Should I relinquish the services of the customers who also joined in falsely accusing you? Done. Perhaps I shall fire some of our tellers who watched without doing anything as well? If it is what you desire, consider it done!"The bank tellers; silent non-descript middle-aged men and women, tucked safely behind their granite counters, all turned to their manager in a cold sweat. Maybe minding their business during the commotion hadn't been the best bet after all."Now now" Benjamin tried to pacify him, but something sitting at the bottom right of his peripheral vision struck him as odd. When he turned his head to get a better look, the arrangement moved only so much as to sit at the bottom right again."Am I having a stroke?" Benjamin thought to himself. After turning his head a few more times, it became clear that the object was not of his external
"Let's do it." responded Benjamin. No one was more pleased with the recent developments as much as David. In one fell swoop, it seemed that Benjamin would still be keeping his fortune within Skaling Bank, just under a different name. Amber looked similarly relieved as well."When do we start?" rapped Benjamin."Now we have to find a registrar to start the new company. There are quite a few to choose from…""If I may-" David produced a small red business card. "These people are highly recommended by us, recognized and represent some of the most elite businessmen in the Country. The Number 2 on the Forbes Under 40 list had their second company registered there.Amber scoffed."It's not that difficult to get registered. Why should we go to a place that sounds like they would charge us 100x the normal price?" she interrogated. Benjamin looked for David's response."There is a simple explanation, Madam. Have you heard of the Star Alliance?" David asked. Amber had heard the phrase in passing
"Hey!" Mardo bounced towards them."Can I be of any help to you?" replied Amber. Mardo didn't pay her any attention and got closer and closer to Benjamin "You little shit!" he said, about to raise his fist."I wouldn't do that if I were you. Are you forgetting what happened to those spectacularly trained security guards a few minutes ago?" Amber warned. Mardo hesitated, and Amber moved to block Benjamin from him."What are you, his mommy?" taunted Mardo. Benjamin didn't respond to him. He hadn't responded to anything since he emerged from his exit. His eyes jumped from Mardo to Claire, to Amber, and to Mardo again with a blank expression. Sometimes he rubbed his shoulder, and looked away entirely."I'm talking to you little shit! What is a flea like you looking to pull?" snapped Mardo."I would advise you to refrain from talking to my patient that way." said Amber. "Patient?" asked Mardo, with something glimmering in his eyes. Was it hope? He looked at Benjamin again, who had not utte
He tapped the back of her shoulder."Don't bother" Benjamin spoke. Intelligence had returned to Benjamin's eyes; his face now wearing a sombre expression. "Is this how it always is?" asked Amber. The picture was getting a little clearer to her. Benjamin's irascibility with these people. For a moment, he didn't respond, but only stared forward, as if he had truly become an invalid."She wasn't like that. She was different. At least in the beginning." he said finally."And now?" asked Amber."Now they all burn" Benjamin replied. Not overzealous, not pitiful, not serious, just a statement of what he had decided a while ago. Amber shifted a little uncomfortably."I don't know how I feel being an accessory to someone's grand scheme of revenge.""I'll pay you quite handsomely" Benjamin grinned, shifting the tone of the conversation."Right...Still, what purpose does having them believe you're insane serve?" asked Amber."Are you being serious? I got this whole idea from you.""What are you ta
A bead of sweat travelled across the Boss's face. This woman was the type that was peculiar about first impressions. David from Skaling Bank had indeed called a few hours before about an incoming guest, something about a big shot persona with a few hundred million to throw away.Same old, same old. He then replied by telling David to forward the finer details to Vanessa(The Secretary), but he had never gotten around to checking on her about it. And she was yet to debrief him about any of it. It wasn't looking good, but still, the situation could be managed--"My sincere apologies Ma'am. I won't make any excuses. It has been quite the longest day, and I was just about to discuss with matter with my secretary. We have had quite the backlog." That last statement was a little funny considering the waiting room was empty besides four of them."But like I said, there is no excuse. Please accept our apologies. I'll take full responsibility." reiterated the Boss."And how will you do that?"
"The Card?" repeated the Boss."The Card." affirmed Benjamin. Then, as if recognition was only just entering his eyes: "Ah, yes. Of course, that card! Yes. Naturally. Let's go into my office, and we can discuss how you want it delivered-"Benjamin didn't budge an inch. That response was neither a yes nor a no. "Maybe you're having trouble understanding" started Benjamin "but I need a yes or a no on the black card."Something about that last statement made the boss wince a little, and he approached Benjamin again. Looking around his very empty waiting room again, he whispered:"I understand perfectly Mr.Black, but I wonder if David had accurately painted the clandestineness of the Star Alliance group to you and your companion here. If he didn't, he should have at least outlined the benefits that come with being a member of such a group. Now, think about an organization that can provide such services, is it wise for us to casually discuss them like a passing subject in such an open area?
Benjamin was a little unsatisfied with the answer. Lavender didn't elaborate on the last part. Was Star Alliance truly capable of everything that David had promised? He heard a small ping, like a smartphone notification message. The blue text flashed again, this time with a graphic of an empty bar. The left end of the bar was labelled Level 1, and the other end was labelled Level 2. "BOW DOWN TO ME" was typesetted clearly on top. Then as mall hatching began to creep up the bar, up to a quarter.Another text flashed 25EXP received. It seemed like this was exactly like a video game. More and more uses of the skill meant levelling up. And no doubt, with each increase in level, it would get easier to get more uses like this lie detection. In other words, it was a skill that forced you to control others as much as possible, 24/7. "Interesting" Benjamin said out loud. "Of course, he's going to say that" said Amber, ignorant of what had just happened. "I'm asking him if he can prove any of
"Congratulations, Mr Black. You are now CEO, Owner, and the sole board member of IVY CORPORATIONS," said Lavender.Immediately the words left his mouth, Benjamin heard the System's voice this time, and a bigger text box appeared in his vision's screen:"Event Unlocked: Road To Planet Domination. Scenario 1 of 25 Complete: Form your First Company. Overall Progress: 2%+10EXP Distributed to All Skills. You have now become someone to watch in this world. You have unlocked Skill: Foresight. You have unlocked the Feature: Skill Tree""Whoa" blurted Benjamin, unable to help himself. He wanted to get right into everything, but that would've required several hand movements, and they were still cautious about him using the interrogation skill from Bow Down To Me a few minutes ago."It does have a nice soft feel to it" praised Amber as she mumbled the company name over and over. Business was concluded for Benjamin. The curiosity about the new features was burning a literal hole in his eyes as th
