“Claire! I’m still waiting for the Whiskey.” the man said.“Coming, Dear!” yelled a woman’s voice back, presumably from the bar behind the living room.
God, No! That wasn’t Claire’s voice was it? Was this a dream?
Benjamin promptly came back downstairs. As soon as he touched the landing, he felt his phone vibrate. He took it out to see it was a message from his bank.“DEBIT AMT:$20,000 ACC:233**********54 DESC: WITHDRAWAL/ATM DATE:15/06/23”“What?!” he yelled! The man in the ante-room only raised an eyebrow.
$20,000. That was his entire life savings! He had started saving religiously since he lost his Mother at 15. After doing odd jobs, here and there, before meeting Claire, his savings were about a measly $900.
However, after he married, he created a joint account with Claire, where they each contributed equally, with Benjamin going to the local university and then working in a fast food joint overnight.
But what was the meaning of this?Claire came out of the revolving door that led to the bar and approached the ante-room. She paused, on seeing Benjamin.“Claire, what’s going on?” Benjamin asked, a small tone of whimper in his voice.
“You-you weren’t supposed to be back yet. Didn’t you have a full day today?” Claire responded, dodging the question.“Come, now, Claire. Of course he had a full day. A full day filled with yard work, remember? He has to clean the grass everyday.” Simon strolled in from upstairs.
Claire turned her face away from his.“That’s right, I forgot.”Benjamin was not ready to accept what was happening as reality. In fact, he would soon wake up any moment. Claire, his wife-“Claire.” said the man in the suit, shaking his tumbler.
“Ohh, I’m coming.” Claire strolled past Benjamin without so much as a glance. On getting to the man, she poured his glass half-full and gave him a naughty smile.
Simon, still grinning like an idiot, was lavishing this scene before him. Lavishing Benjamin’s speechless face. He grabbed Benjamin by the shoulders, and talked to the man in the suit.“Hey Mr Mardo. This is the Live-In-Son-In-Law we told you about. How does he look?”
“Quite frightful, I’m afraid.” They both laughed while Benjamin continued to look at Claire.
“Claire, look at me. I’m your husband” Benjamin said.“Please, don’t make things difficult, Benjamin. I’ve been meaning to tell you-”
“Tell me what?!” Benjamin barked.
“Welcome, Master Mardo of the the AirCable group. I must say I am glad my daughter has finally come to her senses” Joanne Black strolled.“Not at all. She is very beautiful” remarked Mr Mardo, which made Claire blush. She turned to Benjamin.
“Let’s not make things harder for ourselves. You can’t provide anything for me. It’s been three years, and I only see you as a Lamp-stool instead of my husband. Haven’t we suffered enough?” Claire asked with pity.
“And the Money?” asked Benjamin.“Oh, I withdrew to use for planning Mardo’s party next week. Since, it was mostly my money anyway.” Claire started. “I left you with your $900 though” she finished.
“$900” laughed Simon. “Were you actually saving that amount? I spend more than that on my lunch.”“Don’t be cruel, Simon” warned Claire.“Yes, Simon. No need to be cruel” said Joanne Black. She was pacified because things were playing out perfectly.
Ever since her husband’s disappearance to Europe, and only his Vice President currently handling the Black trading group, their family estate and company, there have been doubts and uncertainties among the board on who to take over as CEO.
Conventionally, it would have been Simon, but for his little experience and the fact that her husband, Charles Black, had expressly stated and written out Simon from becoming the next heir for some mysterious reasons, she was in a predicament.
If anyone from the board of their company was to become CEO, instead of her children, her life would be finished because of that secret thing she had done. Of course, only she knew about this.
But with Mr Mardo, the CEO of AirCable , the 4th largest cable provider in the world, marrying her daughter, Joanne could consolidate her power across the board. She wasn’t even thinking about the useless son-in-law anymore.
“So, what will happen to me?” asked Benjamin.“I am divorcing you, Mr Benjamin.” said Claire coldly.“And stripping you of our family name! Finally. I don’t know why my husband decided to even bestow such a honorary name on someone so lowly as you!”
Benjamin suddenly remembered something else. His sister in the hospital for a coma. Her treatment was being funded directly from Mr Charles Black, the head of the Black family. A man who he hadn’t even seen before, displaying so much kindness to him.
That was a major part of his endurance here. Mr Charles hadn’t told anyone he was funding his sister’s treatment, but if he gets kicked out here, what would happen to his young sister?
“Claire, let’s think about this-” With his world crashing down, and nobody listening to him. Benjamin gets another text, from MedHill, his sister’s hospital. It said her treatment payment had been late for a couple of weeks, and they would soon discharge her if nothing was done.
Was this really real life? Benjamin walked slowly outside to clear his head, while everyone snickered.“Benji” called Claire. But with pity this time, instead of love.
Outside Benjamin buried his hands in his face, until one of the gardeners came along.“I’m really sorry to do this, Sir, but could I have a spare change? I haven’t eaten in days.”
Benjamin thought it was weird for a gardener to call him Sir, as they all usually insulted him. Also, hadn’t they already been paid that month? But the gardener, an older man of 40, did look hungry and emaciated. Although he had lost his savings, and his life was crashing, he silently gave the man his last $2. The man nodded in appreciation and zoomed off.
After more wallowing, Benjamin thought it best to get up and go to the hospital first to explain his situation. Once on his feet, he hear a loud beep that seemed to come from his left ear.
“System Initialized. Task 1: RobinHood, Achieved. Automatically transfer $5,000,000 to pay for Sister’s treatment?”“What the hell?”
“What the hell?!”Benjamin swung his head around to see who was speaking. After turning around twice, it was obvious that he was alone on the entrance pavement.“Hello?”“System Initializing…” The voice seemed to come from everywhere, and nowhere at once this time. The tone was difficult to describe, but if you had to manage-“Error. Unknown response.” Now it seemed to come from both ears. Benjamin’s knees began to knock. A voice without a body. Had he lost his mind sitting on that pavement? Did his worries really make his mind snap?“Mr Benjamin.” One of the Mansion guards had approached him.“You’re needed inside.”“Ahh. There he is. The man of the hour!” yelled Simon. This was almost too enjoyable. They were inside the Living Room, while Claire was outside cuddling up with Mr Mardo by the pool. Simon and Joanne Black were sitting on the soft vegan-leather sofas facing Benjamin.Joanne was wearing her glasses, scrolling through social media on her phone.“Please-” Simon motioned to an em
“We will reimburse you $1,000,000 for such a sight! Please accept our apologies!”“What??” echoed Joanne Black and Simon Black. The servants and the maids had gathered around now.Benjamin was still shocked. How was all of this happening? Was any of it actually real? Was someone playing some sick joke? Then he remembered the voice coming from his head. It can’t be, can it?“Master Benjamin, forgive me. Are the clothes not to your satisfaction?” inquired the butler.“Errr…” Benjamin started. If this was reality, he had to accept it. “I don’t need these clothes now. I have more important matters to attend to.” Benjamin stated.“I understand, Sir. I will condemn this clothes and return with other ones more suitable to your taste. Your $1,000,000 will be sent later today” the butler said and took his leave. There was a small moment of silence before Simon Black began laughing.“You crafty rat. You actually paid someone to pretend like they’re from Valentino’s? How pathetic. Did you see how c
“Deal?”Amber Stone looked from the smallish girl in a coma to the 5 foot 10 male that was standing before her with a poorly faded buzz-cut.His clothes looked like they were freshly roughed and rubbled up from the nearest garbage disposal, and his backpack like it had been through two ravening wolves that loved the taste of cheap leather and sweaty sunbathed fabric. She scoffed at herself, but she could see the point of the nurses and the security, albeit how unprofessional it looked. There was no way in the sands of hell or heaven that this individual was about to produce million dollars to pay for the hospital’s treatment at the bat of an eye, right?“Alright. How much do I owe?” Benjamin responded without skipping a beat. He dropped his bag, and began to scroll through his phone.“I think we need to head down to accounts for that, Mr Wallouby.” said Amber, pointing to exit the room.“I prefer to be called Benjamin, and you have to be crazy if you think I will be leaving my sister a
“Task 3: Domination, Begin.”Domination? Task 3? What was that all about?Benjamin’s phone pinged and he took it out to look at the bank alert.“Debit Amt: $4,700,000 Acc:143******23 Desc:Domination Date:04/07/23Balance: $495,300,000”This was really happening. He looked up at the scene before him. The nurses were plugging Ivy back into her respirators and re-inserting her IV drips, albeit hesitantly,as Amber had just told them they would be losing their jobs. Amber supervised them, while Mr Alcatraz still had his head bowing. He had miscalculated. Surely this boy was from a massively wealthy family, even if he didn’t recognize the family name, and only now decided to reveal himself now for some strange reasons. As the CFO to the hospital, he must humble himself, and affiliate himself with this boy and his family, to draw out more money from them….“Once again, a thousand apologies, Mr Wallouby. But might I suggest Ms Claire is moved to a different Ward? I have to say, this room is tight
It was getting late outside at the hospital parking lot, and Benjamin could not believe his life. From a multi-millionaire, back to a pauper! He had not a single cent on him, and decided to call his wife to see if she would pick him up.He called her three times to get no answer. On the fourth try, the call was denied. He waited a while before trying a fifth time. Maybe he was in a daze from losing, or maybe he was just stupid. He and Claire shared a special connection. Surely something like this won’t be enough to make her disregard him completely. She picked up on the fifth try.“Hello?” she talked as if her mouth was full of something.“Claire, it’s me. Can we talk away from everyone else? I’m at my sister’s hospital.” said Benjamin. Claire was quiet a minute on the line, before she made a gagging noise and brought herself closer to the phone.“Sure. We can talk now.” she said.“Uh- I was thinking in person, Claire. Alone.” he stressed.“I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to see me
Benjamin Black felt like he was riding a jet powered cloud. He had driven a car once at a parking lot with some of his high school buddies. But it was an older model that belonged to a friend’s parent, and you could feel the weight of the steering rack and every gravel and chip and bump on the parking lot. This Mclaren just felt like nothing at all. Meanwhile, Amber was extremely nervous. She had only taught him how to use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel minutes ago, and the Park and Reverse buttons on the gearbox. But this man was driving at 170 miles per hour. Just 30 miles from the top speed in open country road.“Holy Shit!” laughed Benjamin at the top of his lungs. The windows were down and the winds were forming a tiny hurricane in the cabin. The V6 engine was roaring with it. Amber nodded but kept her eyes watchful on the bends that were coming up.This was her dream car but riding in the passenger seat of someone that hadn’t driven a vehicle in the past 5 years was t
Mr Mardo Wormwood tapped his fingers gently together as he listened to the bank manager. The details of the conversation was about a new acquisition; the buying of the rights to air Super-sports Television on Aircable. This would make Mr Mardo richer beyond imagination.Sports was the one thing Aircable had been lagging behind on all these years because a certain company had monopolized the rights many years ago, but this company was about to the bankrupt soon and they were selling the rights to the highest bidder. In this case, that is Mr Mardo.“How much are we looking at, Mr Mardo?” said the manager.“Just tell me your interest rates above $10 million. If I deem it acceptable, then we can talk.”As the bank manager continued to drone on, Mardo caught the sight of a familiar individual. Or thought he had. Maybe the high interest rates the manager was explaining to him had distracted him.“Hey, Sweetie.” It was Claire Black, surprising him on his day of working. Mardo was pleased to
“I repeat. Violent male on the loose.” said the guard into the radio.“I told you not to touch me” Benjamin said. He could feel his body heating up. Was this the effect of using the system? But he soon felt the touch of a cool hand on his shoulders that seemed to dissipate the heat.“Benjamin, enough” said Amber. Pleading with her eyes. Benjamin cooled down, but then turned to Mardo. The Bank manager rushed into the scene.“What on earth is going on here?!” asked Mr David.“It’s this homeless dude. He tried to attack this gentleman here!” said one of the onlookers.Soon the others started joining in.“Yes, see how he dresses and how unkempt he looks.”“Somebody like him should be locked up! What is he doing in a bank?”“He’s a scammer. I saw him telling that woman to send him some money!” They all chorused.“That’s not true!” yelled Amber.“Enough!” said Mr David. He looked at Benjamin, and then looked over to Mr Mardo, who had turned white.“Mr Mardo, did this man try to attack you in this p
It was a long exhausting flight, and the first order of business was to stop by the University and see the fruits of JMONEY's work. He rode in one of the SUVs, and sure enough, he could see mayhem from even the gate."I'm sorry, Sir. The University can't grant entry to any visitors at the moment. For your own safety." said one of the University's security."Is there something wrong, Officer?" asked Benjamin."We have a few troublemakers we're dealing with. That's all.""Then it's fine, you can let me in" Benjamin used [Bow Down To Me]."Understood, Sir." Benjamin watched as they drove past broken windows, strewn toilet paper on the lawn, black graffiti on beige-white buildings, and a bunch of boys in ski masks running with metal bats. He dialed Michael and JMONEY's numbers. "Come to the dorms."Holy Shit" whispered JMONEY as he entered the air-conditioned Range Rover. Michael entered the front seat, with similar exclamations."What's the status report?" questioned Benjamin."The sta
"Huh?" muttered James. "The hell?"But Benjamin looked up to find Black's easygoing face had turned grave. He almost resembled his wife."I'm not sure I understand what you're saying, Benjamin," answered Mr. Black.Ahh, I see."Thank you for confirming it. I've had a hard time trying to decide if what that bastard told me was the truth, or not. Goodbye." dismissed Benjamin. In an instant, Black appeared before him, his hands crushing Benjamin's wrists to take hold of the pen."You should've just listened, and taken the easy way out, Benjamin," said Black softly.[Notice: [Enhanced Body] compromised.]Benjamin screamed in pain as Black wretched the pen from his fingers, but all too suddenly, Black's movements stopped. His eyes swayed from Benjamin to his stomach. There was a red swelling around a spot where It looked like his intestines had caved. A fatal swelling. James Black removed his hand slowly after delivering a deadly punch to his father's guts. Blood streamed from Black's mout
The man returned to observing the calm waves of the beach, even though Benjamin was now only inches away, looking down on him.Is this Bastard going to make me talk first? frowned Benjamin. He cleared his throat. "You were looking for me?" he started but decided that was too polite. "What the fuck do you want?" he added. The man pointed to his left. "Take a seat. You're in my sun.""What seat?" barked Benjamin, but he was stunned to see, by the man's left, almost touching his shoulders, an identical beach chair. That's Impossible. There was only one plastic chair on this entire Beach! I was sure of that just a few seconds ago.The man gestured again: "Aren't you going to sit?""No, thanks. I'd rather stand."There was no further communication from the 'GrandMaster', until Benjamin decided, reluctantly, to take the Beach chair. Activating [Enhanced Body] first."Now talk" commanded Benjamin."You've done well to make it this far. To be honest, it was pretty touch and go there for a lon
Benjamin turned over the phone and unlocked it. A video was already playing on the home screen. It was a hospital setting, which immediately set off different alarms in Benjamin's head.It was a private ward, and Benjamin recognized the pattern of the windows, the wall colors, and some brand-new equipment by the patient's bedside, which looked a lot like the pictures of hospital machines Amber had once shown to him for approval. The video was in Medhill Hospital. The patient was a still, petite figure with long straight hair that had to be combed for her every morning because she was incapable of waking up to do it herself. It was Ivy Wallouby."I trust you need no further explanation," asked James Black. Benjamin looked up at him with eyes of controlled fury."I'll kill you" he stated, not as a threat, but a prognostication of what was to come."I don't doubt that you would if you could, that is. But I hope this puts everything into perspective. Now, are you willing to hear what I ha
"So, what are you going to do, Justine?"Madam Black looked from family to foe. Claire, Simon, and Mardo were eagerly anticipating some strong response, based on how they were looking at her with wide impatient eyes. She looked back at Benjamin, still dumbfounded."What do you want?" she asked him."Want? Well, Mrs Caroline may be exaggerating things slightly there, so I don't blame you for thinking that way. This isn't some threat, or even Blackmail, Ma'am. In fact, it's quite the opposite. We're here out of respect, and professional courtesy, as Amber had deduced that maybe the board might have not told you." Benjamin rose."And now you know. We'll work with Mrs Caroline to send out figures first thing on Monday morning. It should be a good deal to think over the weekend.""Why are you doing this?" cut in Claire. For a long time, even since the bank incident, she had not been able to look him directly in the eyes. But now she did.Her eyes are weak and dull, thought Benjamin, before
Benjamin grinned and clinked his glass a few more times. "A toast, everyone." Soon, the sound of Benjamin's glass was the only sound to be heard in the hotel's hall. Benjamin looked again to the Black family table.Madam Black, Simon, and Mardo had all joined Claire in a gaping expression.Benjamin raised his glass. "To the couple--"Mardo rose. "Get this hobo out of here! Now!" he instructed, not minding decorum. The guests were appalled as some security approached Benjamin."Are you sure you should be treating your guests this way?" asked Benjamin."And when I find out who let him in here, you all are going to have a lot to answer for!" Mardo berated the security.Should I get rough? wondered Benjamin. But before two of the guards could close the distance by a further step, 3 gentlemen from a nearby table rose and quickly approached to block the guards."What?""Is exactly what I want to ask, Mr.Mardo." Caroline's voice pierced the air from the table next to Benjamin. "As far as I k
Amber donned a sunset brown dress that draped all the way to her ankles, barely brushing past the straps of the fragile, but stunning black high heels. On both of her wrists were gold and silver bracelets stacked upon each other in closed, tight gaps. Her necklace was even simpler; a round thin chain of something that sparkled under the building spotlights, and helped to accentuate her mischievous smile. She had curled the ends of her hair into two stunning semi-circles that she brushed off her chest as she approached the dumbfounded Benjamin."Ready when you are, Boss." she poked playfully."Looks like someone's been on a shopping spree. Do I need to look into your salary?" he teased."If you do, you should remember all the bonuses I should have made for all my *hard work*""I'm just surprised you even had the time.""Oh, no. I had my cousin pick this out for me.""Really? Wonder what she looks like."Johnny Zeppeli coughed. "Don't you people have somewhere to be already? This is sti
"Pauper?""Not quite, as you can see. I usually go by Benjamin these days. Also, CEO of Ivy Corp. President of the Medhill board. Or just simply, Boss. The elevator's closing, Mr. Mardo. Don't you have somewhere to be?"Mardo Wormwood found himself leaning slightly off-center and stopped himself with the door before he could fall and collapse right there."It's impossible" he whispered under his breath, staring at Benjamin like he was the 8th wonder of the world. A wonder that had risen from the dead and posed a threat to his survival."You know what they say. Something's always impossible until it's not." smiled Benjamin.Mardo massaged his head. "I have to be dreaming or something"Benjamin pushed the button for the ground floor, with Mardo inside. "Don't worry, Mr. Mardo. All will be explained in time. And by in time, I mean very soon. Extremely sooon" The doors began to close. "See you at the Wedding" winked Benjamin from the other side.On the ground floor, Mardo was still strugg
Inside the tower, Mardo stopped by the front desk."Excuse Me. I would like to see the CEO" he strummed politely. Dominique, one of the officers on duty that day asked: "Do you have an appointment?""If I had, I would've mentioned it, don't you think?""Unfortunately" replied Dominique, "We can't let you in without an appointment, Sir.""Do you know who I am?"Dominique shook his head irritably."Then at least tell your boss who I am. Mardo Wormwood. Aircable CEO, and owner. Or you don't know what this too? Do yourself a favor. Pull out your phone, find out, and don't get fired for turning away someone like me when your boss comes in to check in later.""I know, Aircable, Sir. Unfortunately--" Dominque turned his attention to his pocket, where his cell was vibrating."Just one moment, Sir. Hello?"Mardo overheard a gentle tinny voice issuing an inaudible command."Alright. Understood." Dominique ended the call. "You're all set to go, Mr. Mardo. We're glad to have you."And with that,
