EPISODE 8: The Prison

After a few hours driving, they finally arrived at a place where a very tall fence stands with barbed wire and an electric fence warning on it.

Alex parked the truck by the roadside and got out, Elena, Edith and Yojiro followed him to the fence.

“This should be the place. We will get to the door on the other side but before that, I just need to check a few things first.” Alex said and leapt into the air and for a few seconds looked into the prison yard to see the situation inside.

After he landed, he said. “It is just as I expected, there are people here already. Let’s go and see what they have made of the place.”

They got into the truck and Alex drove them to the entrance of the prison, the gate was locked so Alex got out and broke the padlock that had been used to lock the entrance gate, he pushed open the gate and went back to the truck and driving it inside.

Once inside, the prison is divided into four section. The first section is the entrance of the yard, it is connected to the gate, the road leading inside all the way to the first entrance of the cafeteria. This section is currently free of any zombies.

The second and third sections of the prison yard are the wire fenced areas to the left and right of the first section. Each of them being an outdoor area that is used by the inmates to exercise and enjoy the outside. Alex looked to his left and to right, across both of the fences are hundreds of prisoners that have turned into zombies rattling and clawing at the wire fence.

He realized that the prisoners must be outside when the infernal rain happened, and they when they turned they were already trapped in the yard.

Lastly, the fourth section of the prison is the building itself, it is connected to all of the three section by automated blast-proof doors that required a keycard possessed only by the prison guards to be opened. From the first section after coming in through the gate, the fourth section is entered through the cafeteria, leading to the cell sections which are in a separate building connected to the cafeteria and each of the outdoor yards.

After carefully analyzing the entire prison just to be sure it matches the one from his past life, Alex turned to where Elise and Edith were seated in the back seat and said.

“You two stay here, this car is bullet proof in case something goes bad and we get shot at.” He got out of the truck and walked to the gate, with the chain that was used earlier with a padlock, he grabbed the chain and wrapped it around the handle of the door, tying it in a knot that made it impossible to open.

As he was walking back to the vehicle, he noticed the figures of at least five people watching them from the main prison cafeteria building. He behaved as if he did not see them and got back into the truck, driving it to the entrance of the cafeteria and parking it.

“What are we doing here brother? Aren’t we at a better survival chance if we keep travelling? Or get to the sea and find a ship to live in?” Elise asked.

“She does have a point. Plus there should be a lot of zombies in here as well, wouldn’t we be in danger here?” Edith added, backing the question that Elise just asked.

“No we are not, believe me. As of right now, there is no more fish in the world, all of them turned into zombies. This not only means that at sea we will starve, but when the sharks, orcas and all of the large aquatic predators begin to mutate, a ship at sea will be the last place you want to be in to stay safe.” He said and opened the door.

He carried his Katana and guns, asking Elise, Edith and the Yojiro to grab a baseball club and come with him. The four of them left the car and walked to the entrance of the cafeteria building. The glass door was locked as usual so Alex pretended to notice that there are people inside already, raising his hands and asking Elise, Edith and Cain to stop.

“There are people inside, be careful.”  He said.

Alex activated clairvoyance in advance and then knocked at the door and shouted.

“We know you are here, open the door for us, we will rather not break it open.”

Instantly, twelve people walked from different places they have been hiding, holding guns and approached the door.

“Has any of you been bitten?” one of them asked.

Alex shook his head and said “No, if any of us had been bitten, I would have killed them myself while they were still human. We are only seeking shelter, I believe we have some supplies you will find very useful.”

With a wicked smile in his face that tells his intentions, the largest of them all walked to the door and placed a card on it. After a couple of seconds the door beeped and the man pulled it open.

Alex focused his sight on the large one first, then the rest of them one after the other, reading their information on the clairvoyance system skill window.

He found out that a majority of them were prisoners, one of them is a guard and the ladies were visitors that were in the prison at the time when the infernal rain fell. He also realized that they want to let them in so that they would trap them, rob them of their supplies or worse, even kill them to take it.

Alex and the rest of his group walked right into the door and the man closed it immediately they were inside.

He looked around and saw that there is blood stain all around the place from when the prisoners rise as zombies and killed the remaining humans that did not turn. But Alex also noticed that there is not a single dead body of a zombie in the place and instead, there are a lot of blood stains from the bodies being dragged away.

This gave him the clue, “the zombies in the cafeteria were killed by these guys, then dragged out of the place most likely to the incinerator that burns trash for the prison and burnt to ash.

“How did you know that we were in here? We were perfectly hidden and you just came by just like that and called us out.” one of the ladies said as Alex and the rest of his group were walking around to see if the place is really safe or not.

“Common sense if I may say. Just like you must have realized, we also realized that the prison which has long fences all around it, with multiple layers of security doors and cells that have been meant to keep people inside will be one of the only safe places around and do you know why that is?” Alex said

The woman shook her head to indicate she dies not know and Alex said.

“It is because all of the security measures employed in a prison like this to keep the prisoners in, actually work the other way around as well. The fence and the doors are perfect for keeping things and people outside, especially if they are unevolved dumb zombies.”

Elise, Alex, Edith and Cain have realized that the twelve people have taken their time to kill off all the locked prisoners that were locked in the cells who turned and dragged their bodies out of the inner section of the building where the cells are.

“Give me your car keys, your weapons and all of your supplies, the ladies stay here with me but the two of you are going back out where you come from.” The large man shouted, holding and pointing his gun at Alex along the rest of the eleven people who have all surrounded them from all angles and directions.

Alex was a little surprised because this was what he had expected to happen. Although he joined the crew that went to the prison much later in his past life, he remember how Elijah, a friend of his who was a strong and unique evolver later on, had to beat them to pulp just to put them back in line.

He smiled and said, “I thought you will never pull this crap, I almost got bored of waiting. System menu, activate maximum strength and speed!” Alex shouted.

In an instant, he was no longer in the place where he was standing, he had jumped into the air all the way to the ceiling of the cafeteria and in an instant, and he landed behind the large guy. He tapped the guy and for a second, all of them were confused as to what in the world was going on.

Alex landed fast strikes with a jab of his fingers to the energy points on his chest and neck, effectively immobilizing him. In the next few seconds, Alex did the same thing to all twelve of them. He ran back to where he was initially standing in front of them.

“What the hell is going on here? Oh I can move my body! That is probably what that spaghetti you have in your skull instead of a brain is probably thinking so let me re-educate you punks properly for the last time.” Alex said and walked to the large man. Without warning, he landed two jabs into his gut, making him almost pass out from the intense pain from the punch.

He followed them one after the other with punches in the gut until none of them was standing. Then he towered above them and said, “I can kill each and every one of you right now but you do not deserve it just yet. So better get that sorry attitude of yours fixed,” Alex said.

With a clap of his hand, all of them got better and stood up. One of the men quickly drew out a concealed pistol and fired it at Alex. Alex reacted in time and hardened his skin. The bullet ricochet off of him and grazed Edith on the shoulder.

Upon seeing this, Alex pulled out his Katana and dashed towards the man, cutting his head off completely before he could fire another shot.

As the rest of the men saw what he did to the one that did not listen to his warning, all of them realized how much they have been outclassed, plus they just witnessed a bullet bounce off of his skin.

“Clean this up, you, the large one, you look like their leader; come here.” Alex said and the man walked to him trembling.

“David right?” Alex said and the man reacted in utter shock and disbelief.

“You must be really shocked, but don’t be. I know a lot of things like all of your names and the crimes you dipshits committed to be put here, but I don’t give a shit about any of that! Tell me, how much of the cells have you cleaned up?” Alex asked.

“Only the ones upfront here. There are over twenty on the inside that are reserved for death row inmates. We did not go there because the doors there were not locked so the entire section must be crawling with at least twenty of them.” David answered. Immediately Alex was told this, a system alert popped again.

New mission available: Clear all the sections of the prison of all zombies.

[A rare boss zombie has appeared in the prison, be cautious for he is stronger than your current stats.]

Time duration: 9 hours.

Rewards: ???????????

Penalty to clear the quest in the specified time: Loss of hearing

“You are good for now, go and join them in cleaning the place out.” Alex told David and proceeded straight to the first cell room and picked a broom on the floor, sweeping it and setting his bag on the ground.

“Give me a few minutes in here alone, there is something that I want to work on. Watch those damn criminals for me. If any of them misbehaves, kill them without mercy!” Alex said to Edith.

He locked the door of the cell and pulled out the three blood rune essence that he had acquired from his last mission and one by one, he swallowed them. He sat on the floor and folded his arms and legs in a meditation posture while closing his eyes. Rune energy was permeating everywhere in his body and making him stronger.

After a few minutes of absorbing the rune energy, a window appeared showing.

Materials absorbed successfully. Would you like to complete and activate the formless blade?

YES / NO    ?

“Yes!” Alex said and all of a sudden, on his back starts to burn up, creating a bluish tattoo in the shape of a sword.  Another system window appeared.

Formless blade activated. Place your hand on the tattoo and say “Activate formless blade to use it”.
