“Davin! Helen!” she called out, her voice loud enough to attract the attention of other visitors. “I heard about Mom. Is she okay?”

“Maya,” Davin said, keeping his voice steady. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to support my family,” she said, tilting her head slightly. “Isn’t that what family does?”

Helen shot Davin a look, and he felt the tension rise between them. “Support?” he echoed, doubt lacing his tone. “Or to make sure everyone knows you’re here?”

Maya laughed, a sound that felt more like a challenge. “Oh, come on. I know you’re not happy about my wedding plans, but can we not turn this into a competition? This is about Mom.”

“Right. Let’s just focus on her,” Davin said, frustration boiling beneath the surface. “But don’t pretend that you aren’t looking for attention.”

“Seriously, Davin?” Maya shot back, her voice sharp. “You think I’m here for a show? I’m worried about her too, you know.”

“You have a funny way of showing it,” he replied, crossing his arms.
