What actions?

Chapter 4

'What actions?' the words reverberated in his eardrum.

“Give me that, and that, and those. Show me the most expensive shoes and dresses you've here which are worth more than a thousand dollars.“ Nathan spoke confidently.

The ladies gasped at his words, with their eyes wide.

A thousand dollars? They repeated those words, enunciating each of the words.

This must have been a big store but the highest of their clothes was worth only 800 dollars. And this man said he needs clothes which are worth more than that?

“Are you sure sir?" Becca said in a slur, doubting Nathan's words.

" Sure of what? My decision?" He chuckled.

“Why would you ask him that? He's a failure, and ashamed that I've caught up with his tricks so he's only trying to cover up by feigning richness. Don't be fooled by his choice of actions.“

" What wrong have I done to you for you to bully me in this manner? How do you know I'm a failure and why would you say such? Don't you have any regard for your customers anymore?“

" Kylie's store used to be known and patronized because of the relationship between their staff and customers. How come…?“

Nathan was cut off from his words as the lady spoke. “ Of course good customer service for worthy customers who are rich and aren't pauper, you want to be treated as a king? Then you have to show an iota of it.“ She hissed.

" And what if I show it to you now by purchasing clothes worth 5 thousand dollars? What are your bets?“

She irritatingly squeezed her face, smirking. “ I'll lick your shoes, and if you can't purchase those dresses?“ She demanded, with her arched brow.

" I'll give you a thousand dollars."

In a few minutes, Nathan already selected the clothes, shoes, ties, and caps that he would need.

And a whopping sum of four thousand dollars was announced as the total bill.

The lady kept glaring at him, imagining bad things.

“ Becca," she called in a sharp tone.

“Yes ma'am," Becca responded.

“Firstly, let go of those dresses, and alert the security that their attention would be needed here.“ She spoke without averting an eye glance.

Now what was this for? Nathan would have angrily stormed out of the store if only the lady wouldn't have laughed hard at him. His leaving would prove the lady's words to be true that he was poor, and a failure.

Not long after Becca arrived with the securities behind her. She wondered about the motive behind her superior call to action. She stares at Nathan in pity, feeling bad for him.

“Make the payments! Failure to do so, you would not only lick my shoes but be beaten, and thrown out of this store.“ She crossed her arms below her bust.

Nathan only smiles at her words because they sound so ridiculous to his ears.

He stretched forth his bank card to Becca, who collected it with a shivering hand.

Becca was skeptical at first in collecting cards, even after the card was in her hands, she was still in doubt.

Truly judging from Nathan's outfit, she concurred with her boss's reasoning that this man might be trying to cover his shame because the clothes on his body weren't even worth 2 hundred dollars.

“Go on…” Nathan urged as if he was reading her mind.

She slides the card into the machine, clicks on the buttons, and shoves the machine toward Nathan to input his PIN. She furthered with the process after Nathan was done.

The machine bleeped instantly she clicked on the send option.

The look on Becca and her boss was a show of satisfaction that Nathan was lying.

It might even be insufficient balance.

“Successful!" Becca cried out.

The boss squeezed her face in disbelief. How could it be successful when the man before her looked like a cleaner?

It must have been a machine error; perhaps Becca should retry.

“Successful?" She repeated, casting Nathan's look filled with disdain.

" Yes ma'am.“ Becca responded.

“Disregard that. How could it be successful, that must have been an error from the machine.“

“repeat the process so you won't be at a loss and have yourself be blamed later.“

Becca nodded and repeated the process.

The machine bleeped, and it was displayed on the screen” card doesn't exist."

Becca read out the words.

“ You see? I said it." The boss rejoiced at the scandal.

“What are you all standing there for? You should beat and bundle him out of this store! “

She said in a docile tone.

Nathan was petrified at the word, 'card doesn't exist. “

" It must have been an error from your machine, you should retry it." "Perhaps network issues.”

"There's nothing wrong with our machine. You're the liar here.“

" Then the machine was right when it wrote successfully then. “ He protested.

After much argument, Becca retried and this time the process was delayed, the suspense was filling the atmosphere.

Nathan was beginning to have a second change of mind. Maybe he had been tricked by the system.

“Tim Tim..." The machine bleeped.

His eyes rolled towards her in askance.

“Successful."

The boss was disappointed at the later results.

Becca apologised to Nathan but her boss refused to admit her mistake.

Nathan further dashed Becca a thousand dollars.

The boss became jealous that Nathan dashed Becca a thousand dollars. The money would have been for her if only she hadn't said such words to him.

Truly a book should not be judged by its cover.

Nathan stormed out of the store to the street.

His first gaze fell on Angie and her boyfriend.

The super-rich boyfriend whom Angie had ditched him for.

They were both alighting from a Lamborghini.

They didn't see him at first, he was skeptical about letting Angie see him in his present state.

It was still the clothes from the previous day which was on him.

He was still deliberating when a car honked at him.

It was near, he twitched. He heard some laughter behind him.
