[9.48 pm]
[Adam and Clara]
“Ouch! That hurts! Can’t you be gentle? After all, I’m your one and only brother!” Adam complained.
Clara rolled her eyes.
“It’s just a small bruising, so stop whining like a baby. You shouldn’t act so dramatic over something like this when you’ve endured much severe bruisings and injuries over the past few days,” Clara said as she applied salve on a bruise that ran along Adam’s upper arm.
Adam grumbled in a low tune that was barely audible.
“What is it, brother?”
“Nothing…”
“Hah… Just tell me. What is it?”
“It’s just… I have gotten black belts in a couple of martial arts, but all that feels like child's play after doing hand-to-hand combat training with the ex-military guys. It’s as if I haven’t been cultivating any combative skills despite all my years of training. All those medals I’ve won prove nothing. If there’s an outbreak within the facility tomorrow, I’ll be useless!”
Once the bruise on Adam’s arm had been attended to, Clara sat on the bed next to Adam and gave an assuring pat on his back.
“In the past, you were learning the direct and proper way to fight. However, you must understand that that is the gentlemanly and noble way of fighting-”
“What? No, do you remember the time when I knocked someone’s tooth out when-”
“Let me finish,” Clara growled at her brother before continuing, “Hah… Look, did you stick to the techniques and move combinations that you’ve learned in the past?”
“Yes, but-”
“Did you still lose to the ex-military men?”
“Yes…”
“Do you know why?”
“Of cou…” Adam stopped when he saw the look in Clara’s eyes.
‘Yeah, I don’t think it’s an issue about them having a higher rank in martial arts. It was somewhat similar yet very different from what I learned,’ Adam thought to himself.
“Err… No, not really…” Adam replied in a softer voice.
“Brother… In the past, you fought to win. These men fought to live. It was a constant life-and-death situation for them- and that was how they were trained. So, even if they’ve learned similar techniques as you, there is no nobility in their moves.”
“So, it’s like street fighting…”
“Yes, all rules have been thrown out the window whenever they’re in combat. But since your injuries haven’t been worse than the occasional bruisings and cuts, I suspect that they’ve been going easy on you.”
“Easy?! What- …Hah… Yeah, I guess that you’re right… I still have a long way to go, huh?”
“Well,” Clara ruffled his hair affectionately, “You’ll get there in time. I overheard the men saying that you’ve shown the prowess of a true fighter and have great potential.”
“Ah… I see…” Adam chuckled awkwardly.
Clara glanced at a walkie-talkie that was on the bedside table.
‘It has been silent the whole day,’ she thought.
“Oh, that reminds me. Are you on patrol duty today?” Clara asked.
“No, it’ll be entirely on the men tonight. Hah… It has been a week since Sam has gone missing. We finally ended up checking every single floor and room in the building, and there isn’t any trace of where she may have gone. We’ve made doubly sure that there isn’t any breach, so it’s either she’d wandered outside… or someone has sneaked into the building and taken her away… Either way, it’s a potential risk to us all.”
“Yeah, that’s why everyone has been taking turns to patrol and monitor the surveillance cameras.”
“Hah… I wish I didn’t have to take you with me whenever I patrol, but at least I’ll know that you’re safe. In case Sam’s keys fall into the wrong hands, no room is really safe. Plus, there are limited walkie-talkies. So, it’s not like every one of us can have one at all times.”
“True, but do I really have to sleep in the same room as you? You’re so smelly. Do you even bathe?” Clara pouted.
Adam rolled his eyes at his sister’s poor attempt to lighten the mood.
“Sister, you’ll be fainting if I really don’t bathe. Anyway, I saw you talking with Jared and Louis earlier… Is something the matter? I saw your eyes widen in shock for a brief moment.”
“See? Didn’t I say that the men were going easy on you?!”
“I… Well, it’s not my fault that I’m faster than them. Whenever I avoid an attack and run over to the opposing side, I do have some time to observe my surroundings. Besides, it’s not like the training session was in a small area. Even with all the vegetation and few tables left in the recreational area, there’s still plenty of space left to run around. In fact, we could even do one of those contemporary dance routines you used to do.”
“Mm… You have a point there…”
“So, what is it?”
“Apparently, the boys and men have checked every room and-”
“Sister, this is already a known fact. Why are y-”
“Brother, listen. There are only 11 patients left.”
“I don’t understand. How is that a problem?”
“There were 43 patients. That means 32 patients have gone missing. There’s not a single trace of them…”
“What? How is that possible? They were locked in a room, and a number of them were wearing straitjackets, right? There’s no way they could escape, and the only ones who have the keys were-”
“Sam and Louis,” Clara clarified in a solemn tone.
“So, I’m guessing that Louis has nothing to do with this.”
“Yeah, but after searching high and low for Sam, Boyan, and now the patients, Louis is beginning to suspect foul play…”
“...Who does he-”
“He didn’t say, but Jared and he have been looking for… some kind of light?”
“You mean a blacklight?”
“Hm… I think so…? Anyway, they’re going to check the patients’ room tomorrow. Maybe we’ll finally get a clue then…”
“Wait… When did they all check the rooms again? Was it last week itself?”
“Yes, but they swept the entire building a couple more times. It’s creepy that so many people have gone missing…”
“Hm… But Louis has only thought about using the blacklight method now?”
“Oh, no. He already thought about it last week itself and has been looking for the items he’ll need. At the very least, he did manage to find a blacklight. There were only two. I guess that a facility like this wouldn’t be needing such a thing…”
“So, what’s the problem?”
“...Since he ended up searching the entire storage space for the blacklight, he realized that all the bleach was missing. Jared, on the other hand, thinks that the rat poison was taken too. But he’s not so sure because he thinks it saw the poison by a glimpse…”
“Has Louis told the men yet? What did they say?”
“The men only know about the missing patients part. Louis and Jared were planning on telling about this other matter after the training session… But they’re beginning to think that it’s necessary to check the annex building.”
“What? But that’s the zombies-infested area. It’s a deathtrap!”
“Yes… Louis said that it’s going to take time to secure an area to safely enter. The boys are going to ask for the ex-military men to help out with this one. If anyone can handle zombies, it will be them. After all, they did manage to travel past so many zombies to enter this facility in the first place. They probably have a trick or two in case of things going awry.”
“But… if Sam and the others are somehow trapped in the annex, they’re as good as dead.”
“Yes, that’s why Louis plans to try entering the annex within the next few days. He thinks that the men would want the same…”
Adam just hummed in agreement as he was unable to say anything else about the entire situation.
‘Things seem to be getting from bad to worse,’ Adam thought.
Clara tugged at his sleeve.
“Brother, things aren’t looking too good. I’m scared…”
Adam pulled his sister close and hugged her tightly.
“Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
[Brien][The following day at 1.23 pm --- 27 October 2021, Wednesday…][3rd floor of the facility— recreational area…]“Whoosh~ Haha! You’re too slow, boy!” David taunted as he did light sparring with Adam.Somewhat aggravated, Adam growled and charged at the former military personnel once more.“Aww~ Angry, are you? Boy, if you’re going for multiple rapid punches, you need to exhale in sync with your movements. It’s not all about imagining that your hands are on fire.”Seeing that none of his punches were landing on target, Adam retreated a couple of steps to take a breather. He then pulled up the bottom of his shirt to wipe off the sweat that trailed down his face.“I’m not moving as if my hands are on fire!” Adam retorted.“Yes, you are~ You were doing this,” David demonstrated by flicking his own wrist in the most exaggerated manner possible.“I definitely didn’t do that!” Adam half-yelled despite his cheeks warming up slightly.“Aww~ I was just messing with you. But seriously, tr
[Adam][A couple of days later--- 29 October 2021, Friday…][4th floor of the facility…][10.03 pm]After a rather tedious day of doing inventory checks, and packing of weapons and other essentials for the trip to the annex, Adam was beyond exhausted. In fact, the moment he and his sister had returned to their bedroom, he’d simply plopped down heavily on the bed- making the bed creak under his weight and his sister squeak out of surprise. After ensuring Clara that he was simply drained and not hurt, his sister had nonchalantly settled in a corner and started scribbling away in her notepad. All initial concern for her brother has seemingly dissipated.Adam sighed and closed his closed.‘Who knew that something so miscellaneous could be this tiring? Then again, I was hauling many crates of stuff in the storage area… I guess I need to do more weight lifting to be stronger…’“Ooo!” Clara exclaimed softly.‘Yeah, I’ll need to pay close attention to weight lifting and combat training. We met on one of the days I was lounging around in the recreational area. Upon awakening a couple of days after one of Doctor Heine’s therapies, I decided to get a change of scenery. Since the access level for a patient is limited, I wandered about listlessly between the 5th and 3rd floors before eventually finding myself standing in front of tw
[Brien] [The following day at 6.06 am --- 30 October 2021, Saturday…] [5th floor of the facility] The sounds of footsteps echoed loudly along the long, lonely hallway as the group walked solemnly towards a connecting bridge of the annex building. There were a total of four connecting bridges to the annex building, namely on the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth floors. However, the bridge on the fifth floor was chosen because Brien wanted to get a high vantage point upon entry in order to access the situation. ‘It would have been better if the entry on the sixth floor wasn’t blocked by vending machines and chairs on the other side of the door. I must admit that it’s highly suspicious, but it was a good thing that the heavy, metal door had a glass panel just above the doorknob and allowed us to see what was blocking the door… It would have been a disaster if we unknowingly bulldozed our way through that threshold, causing the machines and chairs to collapse and resultingly attracting
[Mike][Highest floor of the annex building]An unknown, chilling silence fell upon the group as Brien continued to stare at the rough carving of a flower on the wooden furniture. Even the usually assertive David watched quietly as their leader continued to grieve. It was the first time in a long while since we’ve seen David in such a loss and despair.‘He has the same expression when we found out that all of our comrades of Sector 4 have perished… Does that mean that Boyan is dead?’The silence continued as the zombies on the bottom floor groaned in unison. A couple of minutes passed before Louis broke the silence within the group.“What is it? Does the flower mean something?” Louis asked. But Brien remained subdued. For a moment longer, he stood somewhat frozen, his eyes still fixated on the craving. Then as if something snapped within him, he abruptly straightened up as his eyes darted around the small space they were standing in.There was a mixture of anger and determination in h
[Brien][Sector 8 of Nation 27][Early May--- 3 years ago…]The early morning breeze blew and rustled the leaves in the trees as Brien stepped out of his cottage and into the veranda. As he closed his eyes and relished the cool breeze hitting gently against his face, Brien brought up the cup of hot coffee he was carrying and inhaled its scent deeply. To Brien, there was nothing as delicious as having a freshly brewed cup of pure caffeine on a lazy morning. Moreover, being able to simply enjoy a moment of peace was rare and one he had not been able to have in a very long while.“Mm,” he hummed and smiled slightly as he sipped at his coffee. The leaves rustled again, and Brien’s smile began to fade. The morning was still his to enjoy, and he was adamant to keep it that way.Despite it being a quiet start to the day, he could hear the distant laughter of children as they played with each other. Goats that have strayed relatively closer to his cottage bleated as they grazed the long, gree

However, all of the vegetables seemed to have grown in less than a month,” Jared observed.“What?! Are you serious???” Adam, who was in the midst of sparring with David a few feet away, half-yelled.“Yes, brother. Are you proud of me?”“Of course I am! To be able to grow vegetables this fast, my sister is a goddess! No! Clara, you’re mother nature incarnat-”THUMP“Ouch! What was that for?!” Adam yelled as he rubbed gently at the soft spot of hi

Deep within this forest, where sunlight filtered through the dense canopy to dapple the forest floor with shifting patterns of light and shadow, lay a serene and lively playground for wildlife. The ancient trees stood tall and proud, their branches reaching towards the sky like outstretched arms embracing the heavens. [Jared][21 November 2021, Sunday--- Noon]As the group approached the center of the town, the atmosphere became increasingly eerie. The once lively streets now stood still, devoid of any signs of life. The abandoned buildings loomed over them, casting long shadows that seemed to whisper secrets of the town's mysterious past. Not even Brien, the leader of the former military personnel, could shake off the unsettling feeling that tightened his chest. "This doesn't make any sense," he muttered as he glanced at both Mike and David, who also seemed to be at a loss for words.Everyone in the group exchanged nervous glances but continued on their journey, their curiosity overcoming their apprehension. But as they neared the town square, a heavy silence hung in the air. Unlike earlier, the abandoned buildings and houses looked worn down and vegetation have long started to grow along the structures. In only the course of a few months of the zombie infestation, it contradictorily looked like
[21 November 2021, Sunday]The small group moved cautiously through the dense forest, their footsteps muffled by a carpet of fallen leaves. The dark canopy overhead swallowed the feeble light of the moon, casting an eerie glow on the uneven path beneath their feet. Hours of traveling in the oppressive silence and pitch-black darkness had left the group both physically exhausted and mentally drained. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig sent shivers down their spines, their senses heightened by the unknown lurking in the shadows. As they trudged on through the silent forest, a sense of isolation enveloped them. The air was thick with an unspoken tension, and each member of the group clutched their makeshift weapons a little tighter. The only sounds that accompanied them were the muted crunch of leaves and the occasional whisper of the wind through the trees. Many hours later, just as their weariness threatened to overwhelm them, the forest seemed to come alive. Birds chirped overhe
[Jared][18 November 2021, Thursday--- that evening]The flames of the campfire flickered as its embers emitted warmth in the midst of the cool night air. The flames cast a soft glow in the clearing of the forest that was plunged into an almost pitch darkness. The small group was huddled together, their faces illuminated by the flames of the campfire as they awaited for the rabbit stew to cook over the fire. The quiet settled over the group like a heavy blanket. It was not unsettling nor unnerving in any sense, but rather a shared acknowledgment of the challenges that lay ahead. Earlier in the day, there had been scattered conversations as they foraged for supplies or tended to their makeshift shelter. But now, as the darkness enveloped the landscape, a somber mood descended upon the group.Jared glanced at the small group gathered around the fire.David was busy filing off the makeshift spear he had carved out of a long branch earlier that day, while Mike continued to watch over the
[Mike][18 November 2021, Thursday--- the following day]Even though it was the afternoon, the forest was dimly lit by the muted sunlight penetrating the thick canopy of trees. If one wasn't particularly attentive to the time, the day could easily be mistaken for evening. The occasional cool breeze of autumn that swept through the forest only added to the illusion, contributing to the atmospheric ambiguity of the surroundings.Scrape, Scrape, Scrape.Mike looked up towards the canopy of trees. The scant sunlight that managed to filter through the forest canopy resembled twinkling lights as the passing breeze playfully teased the leaves.‘Have I ever felt this calm during these recent weeks we’ve been traversing this dense forest?’“Hm…” David grumbled beside Mike.Scrape, Scrape.Adamant to not look at his grumpy comrade, Mike wiggled slightly away without ever getting up. It was the first time since leaving the facility that he had time to appreciate the intricate pattern that the ca
