[The following day at 1.23 pm --- 27 October 2021, Wednesday…]
[3rd floor of the facility— recreational area…]
“Whoosh~ Haha! You’re too slow, boy!” David taunted as he did light sparring with Adam.
Somewhat aggravated, Adam growled and charged at the former military personnel once more.
“Aww~ Angry, are you? Boy, if you’re going for multiple rapid punches, you need to exhale in sync with your movements. It’s not all about imagining that your hands are on fire.”
Seeing that none of his punches were landing on target, Adam retreated a couple of steps to take a breather. He then pulled up the bottom of his shirt to wipe off the sweat that trailed down his face.
“I’m not moving as if my hands are on fire!” Adam retorted.
“Yes, you are~ You were doing this,” David demonstrated by flicking his own wrist in the most exaggerated manner possible.
“I definitely didn’t do that!” Adam half-yelled despite his cheeks warming up slightly.
“Aww~ I was just messing with you. But seriously, try controlling your breath when you move, especially if you’re charging at someone for an attack.”
Brien silently watched the scene with his arms crossed.
‘Despite all the complaints and skepticism, that hothead has found a friend in the young boy. I wouldn’t have minded if it was under a different circumstance. But there still hasn’t been any progress despite us searching the entire main building for an entire week. Moreover,’ Brien glanced towards Jared and Louis who sat further away by the window.
The boys were having an idle chat as they played chess. In the eyes of any passing stranger, the boys seemed nothing more than innocent and gentle.
‘A quiet, dark-haired Asian boy who often reads and wanders about within the facility, and a fair, blond-haired boy who easily smiles and gives off a charismatic aura… Ha! Such nonsense! The blond one especially has a cruel and cunning mind. If I hadn’t personally experienced just a snippet of his capabilities last week, I wouldn’t have believed it myself,’ Brien thought grimly as he continued to observe the boys.
“Jared, focus on the game or you’re going to lose your Bishop in the next couple of moves,” Louis warned in a low yet sing-song tune.
As if abruptly shaken awake from a long trance, Jared jolted in his seat.
“Ah, yes…” Jared replied as he turned around to look at the chessboard.
“Don’t worry about Clara and Mike. They’ll be fine. It’s not like cooking with the mini stove set over there is ever going to endanger their lives. Take a look at Adam over there, he’s completely in his own world. So, if the overprotective brother is all relaxed about the situation, there shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Besides,” Louis paused as he turned towards Brien who was still observing them, “Mike isn’t the sort to attack a young, pretty girl. Isn’t that right, General?”
‘Ah, he caught me. Was I staring at them for too long? No, it can’t be… It wasn’t any longer than a dozen seconds.’
“Ahem… Yes, but it’s not ‘General’. Just call me Brien,” he responded uncomfortably.
‘The boy is sharp and extremely alert of his surroundings.’
Brien glanced at the position on the chessboard. Since it was a fairly large board, Brien was able to see the position of the pieces without having to leave his seat despite him being a couple of tables away from the boys.
‘As always, the blond one has played in a seemingly aggressive manner to divert the attention of his opponent’s pieces towards the queenside of the board- away from the King. If the Jared boy truly diverts his attention to the queenside, he’ll successfully protect his Bishop from being captured but it’ll inevitably leave his King completely defenseless.’
“Ah, yes. ‘Brien’ it is,” Louis smiled.
‘If a few of my men had the intelligence and strategic prowess this boy has, maybe we won’t have lost control over sector 4 of this nation… But alas, there’s nothing I can do about the past. Moreover, with the insufficient manpower and limited information we had, standing our ground in an already overrun sector, is nothing more than a death sentence.’
Brien glanced at Mike, who was cooking, and David, who was still sparring.
Brien sighed and smiled bitterly.
‘I don’t regret abandoning our sector. At least, the four of us survived, and… Okay, maybe three of us. God knows if Boyan is still alive,’ Brien swallowed hard, ‘That man has endured worse. I’m sure that he’s still alive. Maybe he’s just stuck somewhere… We just need to find him. The only-’
*THUMP*
“Ouch! Ah! I give up! You win! Can we please rest?!” Adam groaned after having his legs kicked from under him.
“Hahaha! We’ll stop for now. It’s a well-earned rest. You’re improving, Boy~” David complimented.
“Okay, the food’s ready!” Clara called out.
“Ah, just in time!” David said gleefully as he pulled Adam to his feet.
Clara and Mike brought a tray of bowls and started passing a bowl to each person in the small gathering.
“Sorry for the wait. We made some potato stew for everyone!” Clara chirped.
“Sis, are the potatoes from your farm? The stew tastes different today,” Adam remarked.
“Oh no. I found these in the staff kitchen on the 6th floor.”
“Ah, yes. I remember now. I’d forgotten that we found them yesterday afternoon. Haha.”
“Mm… Anyway, the potatoes I grew should be ready to be harvested in the next couple of weeks. The harvest itself should be able to last us for a few months… I grew quite a few, actually,” Clara said shyly.
“That’s amazing. I can’t wait to try those out,” David said as he gobbled down the rest of his stew.
“Oh yeah. The other vegetables should be ready to be harvested sometime soon. I think it’ll be after the potatoes, right?” Adam asked.
“Haha… Thanks, David… Yes, I hope so, Brother,” Clara blushed at the compliment and sudden attention from the group.
‘I wonder if Boyan has been eating well… We’ve been here for a week, and there still haven’t been signs of him ever stepping foot into the building. But the female orderly, Samantha, and many patients have disappeared without a trace. Were they taken to another place? There are bleach traces all over the building. Could there have been a massacre or is it simply what facilities like these use?’
Brien scooped up the last bit of his stew.
‘It is suspicious, but I can see the reasoning behind it as well. A lot of unorthodox methods are performed on the severely mentally challenged, and it’s not uncommon for patients to harm themselves in a fit rage or such. Speaking of which, I remember hearing that Jared boy had undergone unorthodox treatments on the 5th floor. It’s also where the concentration of bleach traces is at its highest… If that’s the case, I’m more inclined to think that the latter is the reason for all the bleach usage… Maybe…’
“Leaving so soon?” David called out when Jared and Louis have finished washing their bowls and started walking towards the door.
“Yes, Jared has a headache and I need to walk. I feel like I’m having a heartburn. I guess I must have eaten too much,” Louis laughed, and Jared rolled his eyes.
“We’ll be on the 6th floor if you need us,” Jared said.
‘Again, huh? Similar to most of the days Brien had seen the boys, the duo were on their own. There was hardly ever a time the boys were separated. It’s strange to see them so close to each other when they’re not blood-related at all. Could it be due to there being no one else who can suit Louis’ intellect? From what I’ve seen, Jared is the most studious and is the only one who can hold his position during a game of chess...’
“Brien, do you want seconds?” Clara asked.
“Ah, yes. Thank you,” Brien said as he handed her his bowl.
‘Hmm… Maybe it’s because they were both patients in this facility, and Louis pities Jared for the torturous treatment he received.’
Brien thought back on how Louis often acted around Jared despite his cruel personality.
‘Perhaps it’s something more? Hah… Whatever it is, we still need to make a few more preparations before we’re ready to search the annex building. Rushing in will only be stupid since there are so many zombies in there…’
Brien sighed again.
‘Boyan, I hope you’re alright… Wherever you may be…’
[Adam][A couple of days later--- 29 October 2021, Friday…][4th floor of the facility…][10.03 pm]After a rather tedious day of doing inventory checks, and packing of weapons and other essentials for the trip to the annex, Adam was beyond exhausted. In fact, the moment he and his sister had returned to their bedroom, he’d simply plopped down heavily on the bed- making the bed creak under his weight and his sister squeak out of surprise. After ensuring Clara that he was simply drained and not hurt, his sister had nonchalantly settled in a corner and started scribbling away in her notepad. All initial concern for her brother has seemingly dissipated.Adam sighed and closed his closed.‘Who knew that something so miscellaneous could be this tiring? Then again, I was hauling many crates of stuff in the storage area… I guess I need to do more weight lifting to be stronger…’“Ooo!” Clara exclaimed softly.‘Yeah, I’ll need to pay close attention to weight lifting and combat training. Hope

We met on one of the days I was lounging around in the recreational area. Upon awakening a couple of days after one of Doctor Heine’s therapies, I decided to get a change of scenery. Since the access level for a patient is limited, I wandered about listlessly between the 5th and 3rd floors before eventually finding myself standing in front of tw
[Brien] [The following day at 6.06 am --- 30 October 2021, Saturday…] [5th floor of the facility] The sounds of footsteps echoed loudly along the long, lonely hallway as the group walked solemnly towards a connecting bridge of the annex building. There were a total of four connecting bridges to the annex building, namely on the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth floors. However, the bridge on the fifth floor was chosen because Brien wanted to get a high vantage point upon entry in order to access the situation. ‘It would have been better if the entry on the sixth floor wasn’t blocked by vending machines and chairs on the other side of the door. I must admit that it’s highly suspicious, but it was a good thing that the heavy, metal door had a glass panel just above the doorknob and allowed us to see what was blocking the door… It would have been a disaster if we unknowingly bulldozed our way through that threshold, causing the machines and chairs to collapse and resultingly attracting
[Mike][Highest floor of the annex building]An unknown, chilling silence fell upon the group as Brien continued to stare at the rough carving of a flower on the wooden furniture. Even the usually assertive David watched quietly as their leader continued to grieve. It was the first time in a long while since we’ve seen David in such a loss and despair.‘He has the same expression when we found out that all of our comrades of Sector 4 have perished… Does that mean that Boyan is dead?’The silence continued as the zombies on the bottom floor groaned in unison. A couple of minutes passed before Louis broke the silence within the group.“What is it? Does the flower mean something?” Louis asked. But Brien remained subdued. For a moment longer, he stood somewhat frozen, his eyes still fixated on the craving. Then as if something snapped within him, he abruptly straightened up as his eyes darted around the small space they were standing in.There was a mixture of anger and determination in h
[Brien][Sector 8 of Nation 27][Early May--- 3 years ago…]The early morning breeze blew and rustled the leaves in the trees as Brien stepped out of his cottage and into the veranda. As he closed his eyes and relished the cool breeze hitting gently against his face, Brien brought up the cup of hot coffee he was carrying and inhaled its scent deeply. To Brien, there was nothing as delicious as having a freshly brewed cup of pure caffeine on a lazy morning. Moreover, being able to simply enjoy a moment of peace was rare and one he had not been able to have in a very long while.“Mm,” he hummed and smiled slightly as he sipped at his coffee. The leaves rustled again, and Brien’s smile began to fade. The morning was still his to enjoy, and he was adamant to keep it that way.Despite it being a quiet start to the day, he could hear the distant laughter of children as they played with each other. Goats that have strayed relatively closer to his cottage bleated as they grazed the long, gree

However, all of the vegetables seemed to have grown in less than a month,” Jared observed.“What?! Are you serious???” Adam, who was in the midst of sparring with David a few feet away, half-yelled.“Yes, brother. Are you proud of me?”“Of course I am! To be able to grow vegetables this fast, my sister is a goddess! No! Clara, you’re mother nature incarnat-”THUMP“Ouch! What was that for?!” Adam yelled as he rubbed gently at the soft spot of hi

Deep within this forest, where sunlight filtered through the dense canopy to dapple the forest floor with shifting patterns of light and shadow, lay a serene and lively playground for wildlife. The ancient trees stood tall and proud, their branches reaching towards the sky like outstretched arms embracing the heavens. [Jared][21 November 2021, Sunday--- Noon]As the group approached the center of the town, the atmosphere became increasingly eerie. The once lively streets now stood still, devoid of any signs of life. The abandoned buildings loomed over them, casting long shadows that seemed to whisper secrets of the town's mysterious past. Not even Brien, the leader of the former military personnel, could shake off the unsettling feeling that tightened his chest. "This doesn't make any sense," he muttered as he glanced at both Mike and David, who also seemed to be at a loss for words.Everyone in the group exchanged nervous glances but continued on their journey, their curiosity overcoming their apprehension. But as they neared the town square, a heavy silence hung in the air. Unlike earlier, the abandoned buildings and houses looked worn down and vegetation have long started to grow along the structures. In only the course of a few months of the zombie infestation, it contradictorily looked like
[21 November 2021, Sunday]The small group moved cautiously through the dense forest, their footsteps muffled by a carpet of fallen leaves. The dark canopy overhead swallowed the feeble light of the moon, casting an eerie glow on the uneven path beneath their feet. Hours of traveling in the oppressive silence and pitch-black darkness had left the group both physically exhausted and mentally drained. Every rustle of leaves or snap of a twig sent shivers down their spines, their senses heightened by the unknown lurking in the shadows. As they trudged on through the silent forest, a sense of isolation enveloped them. The air was thick with an unspoken tension, and each member of the group clutched their makeshift weapons a little tighter. The only sounds that accompanied them were the muted crunch of leaves and the occasional whisper of the wind through the trees. Many hours later, just as their weariness threatened to overwhelm them, the forest seemed to come alive. Birds chirped overhe
[Jared][18 November 2021, Thursday--- that evening]The flames of the campfire flickered as its embers emitted warmth in the midst of the cool night air. The flames cast a soft glow in the clearing of the forest that was plunged into an almost pitch darkness. The small group was huddled together, their faces illuminated by the flames of the campfire as they awaited for the rabbit stew to cook over the fire. The quiet settled over the group like a heavy blanket. It was not unsettling nor unnerving in any sense, but rather a shared acknowledgment of the challenges that lay ahead. Earlier in the day, there had been scattered conversations as they foraged for supplies or tended to their makeshift shelter. But now, as the darkness enveloped the landscape, a somber mood descended upon the group.Jared glanced at the small group gathered around the fire.David was busy filing off the makeshift spear he had carved out of a long branch earlier that day, while Mike continued to watch over the
[Mike][18 November 2021, Thursday--- the following day]Even though it was the afternoon, the forest was dimly lit by the muted sunlight penetrating the thick canopy of trees. The occasional cool breeze of autumn that swept through the forest only added to the illusion, contributing to the atmospheric ambiguity of the surroundings.Scrape, Scrape, Scrape.Mike looked up towards the canopy of trees. The scant sunlight that managed to filter through the forest canopy resembled twinkling lights as the passing breeze playfully teased the leaves.‘Have I ever felt this calm during these recent weeks we’ve been traversing this dense forest?’“Hm…” David grumbled beside Mike.Scrape, Scrape.Adamant to not look at his grumpy comrade, Mike wiggled slightly away without ever getting up.
