The day passed, Nouel, feeling too lazy to cook, headed to a restaurant to satisfy his hunger. Fortunately, this morning he didn’t have any appointments, so he could relax a bit. As the leader of the Wolf Team, he usually had a lot on his plate, but this morning was an exception.
Nouel left his apartment that morning, wearing glasses with dark blue lenses. Something unusual was happening to him, perhaps due to yesterday’s mission or for some other reason. As he entered the elevator, descending floor by floor, Nouel’s vision started to conjure up images he had never experienced before. It began with scenes from his life with a young man who was his friend, then encounters with people who didn’t exist in the present.
“AI,” Nouel immediately activated his AI Assistant, which he had created to assist with tasks and activities.
“Yes, Nouelvaegnr, how can I assist you?” the AI asked in a female voice.
“Scan my brain, check for any side effects from yesterday’s mission. I feel like the enemy might have launched a mental attack through my helmet.”
“Scanning in progress.”
At that moment, the elevator stopped, the doors opened, and several people entered. Automatically, his glasses scanned those who entered the elevator and displayed their biographical data.
Nouel averted his gaze, causing all the biodata to disappear. As the elevator resumed its descent, the AI delivered its findings.
“Scan complete. Nouelvaegnr, my system did not detect any anomalies. Your brain activity is normal, and there is no damage.”
“That’s strange, I must be hallucinating,” Nouel muttered, puzzled by the AI’s information.
The AI added more information. “However, we did find some backup memory activity.”
“What? Have I lost my memory?” Nouel asked, becoming even more confused because he didn’t feel like anything was missing from his memory.
“This backup isn’t necessarily due to memory loss. There are several possibilities. First, an external party may have secretly transmitted memories. Another possibility is an attempted attack on your mind, and the third is that these are memories intentionally stored and hidden. I can confirm that none of these activities have disrupted your brain.” The AI provided a reasonable explanation.
“I see.”
“Is there anything else I can assist with?” the AI inquired.
When the elevator doors opened, Nouel walked through the lobby and was greeted by a receptionist who appeared to admire him. Nouel simply smiled and waved.
“Can you disable the biodata feature on these glasses? I don’t want to see everyone’s information,” Nouel requested with a hint of discomfort, as he found it somewhat intrusive.
“Of course.”
“Biodata scanner deactivated. Is there anything else I can assist with?”
After stepping outside, he paused on the sidewalk for a moment. Then, he surveyed his surroundings before giving another command to the AI, “I’d like breakfast. Recommend a nearby and delicious restaurant, and place my order as well.”
“Command executed. The system will list breakfast options at the nearest location with a focus on tastiness, healthiness, and suitability to your preferences while filtering out disliked food types.” The AI provided a more detailed explanation to ensure Nouel received a specific breakfast menu that he would surely approve of.
“Oh, and make sure there are no disturbances. I want to enjoy my meal in peace.” Nouel issued another command while walking along the bustling sidewalk.
“I will block any disruptions, including calls,” the AI took control, blocking all forms of transmission.
After a second of processing the previous command, the scan results came in, and the AI reported, “The nearest restaurant has been located, approximately one and a half kilometers away. The menu has been scanned, and we have selected the best dishes among the options available.”
“Seafood? That’s quite rare. Excellent. Have you already placed the order?” Nouel responded, showing interest.
“The order has been received, and the transaction has been completed,” the AI replied.
“Good. I’m done with you.”
“Very well.”
The AI assistant then deactivated.
Nouel then jogged lightly, almost like a morning run, along the sidewalk. He removed his glasses, observing the busy inhabitants of Lycaelus City going about their activities. He didn’t dwell on the visions he had experienced, he didn’t care much whether they were memories or something else. What mattered most was that they didn’t have any adverse effects on him.
The view of Lycaelus City was similar to that of any modern city. Holographic billboards displayed place names, product advertisements, and more. Smooth, noiseless vehicles moved along the streets, hardly disrupting the soundscape.
Most of the city’s inhabitants had machine-enhanced bodies covered in synthetic skin. They were cyborgs, but their appearances were indistinguishable from humans. The glasses Nouel wore were the only things that could reveal the mechanical components beneath their synthetic skin. Therefore, Nouel deliberately took off his glasses to view this beautiful city from a normal perspective.
In the sky, a semi-transparent blue dome enveloped the entire massive city, invisible to the naked eye but visible through special devices like Nouel’s glasses.
Throughout his journey, Nouel saw various holographic displays, with the majority featuring promotions by a company named NewTech Industries. This company was the world’s largest and had branches in cities all under domes.
Upon arriving at the chosen restaurant, Nouel was scanned and greeted by a waiter who was clearly a cyborg. He received excellent service, and the waiter was very formal and complimentary.
After sitting down, several waiters promptly placed his ordered food and drinks on the table.
The restaurant selected by the AI had a luxurious and elegant ambiance with a calm atmosphere. From the outside, the sunlight streaming in gave the interior a unique glow. The spacious restaurant featured numerous elegant wooden tables and comfortable chairs. Waitstaff in black and white uniforms served food and drinks with utmost courtesy.
Despite being in a new era, the restaurant didn’t adopt a futuristic theme, its ambiance remained reminiscent of beautiful, luxurious restaurants filled with antiques and fresh plants by every window. Something highly cherished by people of the future.
Around Nouel, several guests were enjoying their lunch and engaging in lively conversations with friends or colleagues. Laughter and stories filled the air, creating a relaxed atmosphere.
While Nouel filled his stomach, he noticed holographic screens displaying news and advertisements. Once again, the advertisements centered around NewTech Industries, introducing an advanced weapon said to be a breakthrough in the defense and security industry.
NewTech Industries was a major corporation dedicated to developing new technology to improve the world post-nuclear war. They were pioneers in cyborg development and cutting-edge medical technology. Additionally, they had expanded into the military arms and equipment business, supplying the military forces of various nations, which was unsurprising since in this era, the military relied on the company for all their needs.
“This technology, I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. I can’t believe they’ve only just created it, it seems quite ordinary,” Nouel mumbled softly. He then continued to enjoy his exquisite meal.
For context, in Nouel’s city and this era, natural foods like vegetables, fruits, and meat were quite expensive due to the lengthy manufacturing process that made them scarce. Therefore, the restaurant he visited was high-end, specializing in natural foods.
So, what about the citizens who needed basic sustenance? Scientists had created synthetic vegetables, fruits, and meat in laboratories. With adequate technology, lab-grown foods could mature rapidly, taking less than a month before fruits, vegetables, and synthetic meat were ready for consumption and distribution.
Unfortunately, lab-grown foods tasted different from natural ones, the flavor of natural foods was far superior. These synthetic foods became the staple diet of the surviving human population, being not only more affordable but also readily available. Every surviving nation had adopted this approach.
The newly created foods contained substantial amounts of carbohydrates, protein, and vitamins, and they were believed to taste as delicious as the moa bird, an extinct creature that had been renowned for its exquisite meat centuries ago.
Even though he felt full, Nouel continued eating to ensure that his order wouldn’t go to waste. Not only did the food taste delicious, but he also didn’t want to waste it because he was aware that many people in the city struggled with food shortages. He also didn’t want to squander his money, so he made an effort to finish his meal.
After some time had passed, and his order had been fully consumed, Nouel left the restaurant. Upon reaching the restaurant’s courtyard, he took a deep breath and surveyed the surroundings. The restaurant was located in a highland area, offering a clear view of the city.
In reality, a food crisis had led to the creation of synthetic food produced in laboratories, as opposed to traditional farming and livestock. This was something rare in Nouel’s time, and it remained a mystery as to how they still managed to obtain agricultural and livestock products at such high prices.
While strolling, Nouel witnessed a group of young people wreaking havoc in the street. They were smashing store windows and vandalizing parked cars on the roadside.
Not wanting to get involved in something useless and unimportant, he walked past the group of teenagers. There was a park not far from there. That's where he was heading to spend his time. The city park was a place where the residents enjoyed recreation, with various entertainment and sports facilities available, both personal equipment and public facilities, used by the city's residents.Nouel bought a drink that had a slight bluish glow when in the dark."How do cyborgs like this detergent water?" Nouel commented on the drink. He shook his head, closed the bottle, and continued walking towards the field where teenagers were performing tricks with hoverboards. The objects they used were like skateboards but without wheels, hovering about half a meter above the ground as platforms. These boards were not cheap due to their design, shape, and the machinery that had to be adjusted to the user's size and weight.Nouel sat on the stairs where other spectators were seated around the steps.
Upon arriving at the headquarters, Nouel immediately met with Professor Volkov. Without wasting any time, he greeted Vera with a warm welcome. Vera found Nouel’s behavior somewhat peculiar, as he didn’t immediately rush to meet his superior. However, Professor Volkov’s warm reception made it clear that they had a good and close relationship.“Vera, how have you been?” Professor Volkov asked, his gaze warm and gentle. From their interaction, it was clear that they had a good and close relationship.Smiling at the greeting, Vera responded politely, “I’ve been very well, as you can see.”“Don’t hesitate to talk to me if something doesn’t feel right,” said Professor Volkov, sounding like a father figure wanting to help his daughter.“I will.” Vera replied, nodding her head.Nouel interrupted their conversation, getting straight to the point. “Volkov, how’s the progress on examining those cyborgs?” Nouel’s way of speaking to the middle-aged man was casual, as if they were peers and held si
Nouel lives in an apartment that has an expensive price. This apartment is intended for people who have a lot of wealth, businessmen who have large finances. Nouel himself is not lacking in money, as a genius and as a special forces officer serving the country, he has a large income, it is only natural that he lives in a residence that has luxurious facilities. The floor of this apartment is covered with black marble tiles which look very elegant. To the left, there is a living room furnished with a large, comfortable white leather sofa. In the middle of the living room, there is a futuristic coffee table with a holographic display that presents information about the weather, current news, and so on.Beautiful city views can be seen through the tall glass windows that surround the living area. These glass windows also allow sunlight to enter the room, giving a broad and bright impression. The master bedroom is at the end of the apartment, with great views of the city from the large wi
Nouel awoke from his slumber, breathing heavily, cold sweat trickling down his forehead. Dreams of his deceased friend always disturbed him, although Nouel wasn’t a sentimental person and didn’t prioritize emotions, it still affected him.Getting up from his bed, Nouel sat in the living room of his apartment. He stared out the open window, letting the cool morning breeze caress his face. The day was bright, thanks to the protective dome over the city, filtering the dangerous sunlight while maintaining its benefits.Suddenly, Nouel recalled one of his last conversations with Dvliericht, his late friend. They sat on Dvliericht’s backyard terrace, enjoying a cup of tea brewed by Dvliericht’s mother.“You know, I want to become a doctor,” Dvliericht said enthusiastically.Nouel, with a bored expression, replied, “I’ve known that for a while, you talk about it too often.”Nouel’s response made Dvliericht smile.“Out of all aspirations, why a doctor?” Nouel asked, appearing surprised.Dvlie
Nouel shifted his body, launching an attack towards the source of the person’s appearance. The vertical hand swing was swift, but the person who emerged easily anticipated the attack, catching Nouel’s fist as effortlessly as if it were a toddler’s punch. At that moment, Nouel recognized that the one who arrived and thwarted his attack was Vera, a team member who indirectly served as his right hand. Nouel hadn’t noticed her arrival, perhaps due to being engrossed in his thoughts.“Is this your way of welcoming guests, Captain?” Vera greeted him with a smile.Nouel lowered his guard, then withdrew his hand from Vera’s grasp.“Why are you here?” Nouel inquired, not surprised but rather curious as to why the girl suddenly appeared in his kitchen. It’s worth mentioning that Nouel’s apartment had a high-security system, preventing just anyone from entering. However, for a cyborg with advanced technology like Vera, bypassing the apartment’s security was no challenge.“I wanted to invite you
The helicopter that picked them up from the apartment has landed. After donning the necessary gear for the mission, Nouel set off. He had equipment stored at the base and some in his apartment. Since the new drone, now a support weapon, was ready, he utilized armor equipment with a mount indicating the locations of those drones. The helicopter was the same one used for previous transports, taking the team on their missions. They boarded and took their seats as the helicopter promptly lifted off.Inside the helicopter, Nouel began inspecting the equipment and weapons he had prepared, ensuring everything was functional and ready for use when needed.“By the way, how do you spell your friend’s name? I’ve been struggling to pronounce it since the pickup helicopter arrived,” Vera resumed the conversation that had paused when the pickup helicopter came. Earlier, Nouel had discussed a friend with a challenging name.Nouel shrugged. “It does sound difficult. It takes practice and a specific a
After flying for some time, they arrived at the designated location. The helicopter landed in an open area outside the NewTech Industries headquarters, and they disembarked immediately. The NewTech building was a majestic skyscraper with 50 floors. It was constructed with state-of-the-art technology and designed with a futuristic look, adorned with shiny glass panels. A large NewTech logo adorned the main entrance surrounded by neon lights. Luxurious cars were seen parked around the building. As Nouel and Vera exited the helicopter, they were promptly greeted by the security forces already stationed at the entrance. The security team members wore tight black uniforms and were armed to the teeth. They looked highly professional and ready for any contingency. Not only was the security team ready and waiting, but their own team members were also on standby. Nouel greeted them and instructed everyone to get ready for the task at hand today.“Captain,” they saluted while holding the salute
Lucrezia responded with a serious and professional tone. “Everything seems fine, I’ve also talked to Captain Sabertooth, and nothing unusual has come up.”“Isn’t that good news?” Nouel replied, maintaining a casual demeanor.“I don’t know, it feels like there’s a covert plan in motion, something unknown is happening.” Lucrezia sounded suspicious, and Nouel himself was thinking the same thing.“Oh, so you’re thinking what I’m thinking.”“Do you have any suspicions or something?” Lucrezia asked seriously, knowing who Nouel was and what kind of mindset he had. Despite his sometimes unpleasant nature, Lucrezia believed he was someone who always thought quickly, openly, and responsively.“It’s not certain yet, but it’s confirmed that there are supporters of the rebels, maybe even part of the rebels themselves. I don’t know if this faction is composed of staff, security, or one of NewTech’s executives, but I sense something is going on.” Nouel immediately revealed what he had observed a few
Nouel was in the garbage area, in a slum district where there was a massive landfill site originating from various areas, especially the city center, resulting in the landfill site being mountainous. The landfill site was located outside the city walls, and Nouel had already made a hole to enter and exit the city through a secret passage.“What are you doing here?” Dvliericht asked, having managed to catch up. He looked uncomfortable walking on the pile of trash, his gas mask protecting his entire face and head looked worn out and unfit for use.“Looking for the trash I need.” Nouel answered without looking, digging through the garbage. Since Nouel had been forced to stay in the shelter by Dvliericht, the two young men had developed a close friendship, despite having very different and somewhat contradictory personalities.Dvliericht placed his hands on his hips and scanned the surroundings. “We shouldn’t be here, if the city patrol catches us, it could be dangerous.”“In that case, k
Armed with his newly acquired weapon, Xander began attacking the pursuing robot troops. Thanks to his long experience, Xander could shoot accurately, causing the robots to fall one by one. He took precise aim, picking off the robots one by one.“Wow, you’re really good, so accurate with your shots.” Velia praised and appreciated Xander’s actions through the earpiece.“It’s not enough yet, there are still some robots evading my attacks!” Xander exclaimed, then explosions were heard, destroying the walls of the long corridor.“Keep it up, Xander, we’re approaching the exit!” Velia cheered, seeing that their exit route was close ahead.“Of course, I’ll keep attacking until all the ammo is gone!”When the rover vehicles finally reached the end of the escape route, they immediately halted. Xander and several others hurriedly got out of the rover and attempted to close off the escape route. They collectively tried to seal off the passage. Some others disembarked and headed towards the aircr
Inside the underground headquarters, after Xander delivered this information, everyone immediately started packing, which naturally took a very long time as everyone was unprepared for evacuation.“The aircraft is completed, but it hasn’t been tested yet. Should we still go?” Dimitri asked, concerned about the aircraft’s condition, which hadn’t undergone testing yet.“Yes, we don’t have time anymore. Regardless of the aircraft’s condition, we’ll use it. It’s risky, but we have no other choice.” Makarov replied.“Let’s hope we make it.”Elsewhere, inside a large cargo aircraft, Volkov and his forces of robots and cyborgs, who were aware of the underground building being used as a headquarters, were preparing for their attack.“See, I told you this would work.” Clerick smirked evilly at Darina. “Instead of capturing and torturing one of them, it’s much better if we follow them discreetly and install a tracker on the target.”That’s how Volkov found out about the secret project being wor
June 9, 2094Time passed quickly, years went by, and humans had grown accustomed to synthetic food. Numerous factories were established in all four cities, and cyborg projects began to be implemented. Initially, it was limited to body parts like hands and legs, then expanded to organs like eyes. After the success of the project applied to Vera, cyborgs started to appear all over the city.Due to the special requirements for humans to endure the surgical process, the limited number of cyborgs created across the city meant they weren’t dominant yet. Only a few hundred existed, mostly composed of city security forces, not commercially available to ordinary residents. Therefore, despite the success, Volkov continued experiments and developments to make the cyborgs he created more perfect and applicable to all humans. While working on advancing cyborg technology, Volkov accidentally discovered several individuals recruited by Dimitri and Makarov. He was surprised by this development becaus
For several days, Vera refused to eat, she continued to rage. Although she couldn’t get up and walk, her hands were still healthy, and she tried every way to end her life. She was depressed and desperate with her life. Some time later, Volkov came and comforted her. However, Vera didn’t respond, despite being continuously ignored like that, Volkov kept trying to console and strengthen her resolve.“I know you’re very desperate with your body condition. But you can’t torture yourself like this continuously.” Volkov spoke gently and softly, truly reflecting like a man who could be relied upon by Vera, who really needed it.After ignoring Volkov for a while, Vera finally spoke up, asking him a question. “Professor, what would you do if you were in my position?”For a moment, Volkov didn’t respond, he glanced briefly out the window, then turned his attention back to Vera, calmly and softly speaking to the teenage girl. “I think I would also feel desperate, and I would also want to die. Bu
Thanks to advanced medical technology, Vera, who suffered serious injuries due to Darina’s actions, was able to regain consciousness quickly. Severe injuries that should have put the teenage girl in a coma turned out to heal much faster. Unfortunately, there were still limitations in the equipment and technology applied at the hospital, as they couldn’t yet cure serious injuries resulting in physical disabilities. And that’s what happened to Vera, the injuries she sustained left her whole body permanently disabled. For a few seconds, Vera glanced around, her eyes feeling very sore as she looked at the ceiling of the room. The light in the room wasn’t dazzling, yet Vera’s eyes still felt sore and irritated.Vera closed her eyes, trying to move to pull the blanket, but she had no access to her body, she couldn’t move any part of her body.“What’s this? I can’t move my body.”Vera tried to turn her head sideways, but she couldn’t do it, she couldn’t move her head even slightly. Failing i
Finnick, Darina, and Clerick were already in position, monitoring the movement of the electric car driven by the small family from a distance. Volkov himself was opening a transparent tab as if he were working on something.“Okay, I think the subject has taken the bait. I don’t see any other humans within a 1-mile radius, we can execute the mission now.” Darina murmured while observing the small family through the scope of the sniper rifle she was aiming at the car. She herself was lying prone on the rocks, positioning herself strategically for the attack.“Moreover, this area is highly prone to accidents,” Clerick replied, standing next to Volkov. They were amidst the trees of the forest, monitoring using long-range binoculars.“Yeah.”On the other side, atop a tree, Finnick was adjusting the control of the machine device he had created. “My puppet’s status is stable now, we can act anytime.” He informed.“Good work, wait for the signal.” Volkov replied. They spent a few more seconds
While Clerick was working, experiments were postponed. Darina and Volkov focused on being doctors at Hudson Hospital, they appeared very kind and friendly to the staff, nurses, and the patients they treated. This made no one suspicious or even think that they were evil people who had conducted various experiments that violated ethics and humanity. In addition to their friendly nature, their work was also very good and fast. Their surgical skills were very reliable and made them among the most trusted doctors. They also interacted quite a lot with every patient they treated, so almost all patients could get to know them well.Unbeknownst to them, two days had passed. This was the day when Clerick would present the results of his work.“Huh, it’s also enjoyable to train in acting by playing as a good and holy doctor.” Darina stretched her body. This time she was in the elevator going down to the lab, a man named Finnick who also worked there immediately shook his head.“I thought you’d
Hudson Hospital.A five-floor hospital, it was one of the major hospitals in Lycaelus City, admitting more than one new patient daily with various conditions. The hospital was always bustling with patients, and the number of nurses and medical staff working there was substantial. At this hospital, Ferdinand Volkov worked on his project. Whenever someone underwent amputation, they would be offered artificial limbs. Those who wanted to live normally would readily accept the offer. Similarly, those in need of organs would be offered either donor organ transplants or artificial organs. Since waiting for a donor or purchasing existing organs was costly, patients tended to opt for Volkov’s artificial organs. Besides being more affordable, easier to care for, these artificial organs and limbs had several advantages over those of regular humans. Gradually, over the years, Volkov’s cyborg project began to take shape.Unbeknownst to anyone, many of the surgeries to implant organs and artificial
