Exactly eighty-eight days later, the day of the Red Horizon finally came.

The Great Elders of the Peace Faction of the Shadow Spawns had long completed their impartation session. 'Hermes' had been in seclusion since then to digest his gains. Today was the day he would exit his training and compete for the title of Mercury Sovereign.

*****

In the training chamber, Fang Yu's eyes flew open. He had a calm expression on his face.

Truth be told, Fang Yu hadn't expected he would occupy Hermes' body for this long. As days, weeks and even months passed, his emotions had alternated from mild anxiety to intense worry and finally, resignation.

The good news was that he had adapted somewhat to being Hermes by now. Fortunately, the slight changes in his personality he couldn't hide were perceived by the Elders as growth and nothing else. This way, Fang Yu faced no issues with his undercover identity.

As of now, he had mastered a total of hundred abilities from the initial twenty that 'Hermes' knew. Most of them were movement-based as they constituted the bulk of the Shadow Spawns' inheritance. There were also some attack-based abilities, although their physical lethality were not very high. The remaining few were esoteric and hard for Fang Yu to grasp; he only touched upon the surface of comprehension.

"I suppose Hermes will perfect them in the future. According to myth, he has some authority in the Underworld. These two abilities should be the foundation behind that!" Fang Yu gave up on learning the two esoteric abilities for now. One of them was related to refining divine thoughts while the other was a method of guiding souls to the Underworld.

"It's time. The solar lights are about to align!" A divine thought was relayed to 'Hermes' mind by one of the Elders guarding his seclusion. 'Hermes' quickly got up and exited the room.

"Today, I'll finally meet my twin, Rhemes. I wonder if he'll be able to tell," Fang Yu wasn't as worried about the former ratting him out as he was before. He could always use the excuse of the competition to accuse Rhemes of trying to sabotage his participation with a false claim. In the same vein, he could even accuse the former of being a spy too.

A pair of dark wings materialized behind 'Hermes' and he took to the skies. Hollow Travel was a more optimal choice to reach the gathering point, but he was trying to show off his might and gather public favourability from the masses.

Indeed, the flying Hermes with his perfectly sculpted figure, cold eyes and grand aura was quite pleasing to the eye. As he flew over their heads, he left the ordinary Shadow Spawnfolks in a daze.

It was only a bit before the Red Horizon would manifest. Overhead, Fang Yu could see the sun's solar flares begin to dim slightly.

At the same time, all Shadow Spawns felt their powers stir. In the darkness, they were innately several grades stronger. It was fitting that the battle for the next Mercury Sovereign was happening while they were at their strongest, ignoring the fact that they would enter their weakest cycle right after.

Planet Mercury had actually been without a Sovereign for quite a while now after the previous one had been ambushed and assassinated by invaders as soon as he came into power. Logically, publicizing the day of the Red Horizon wasn't exactly most ideal day to select a Sovereign. But since the Elders were in agreement, it could only mean that they had a plan to deal with the possibility of invaders today.

Meanwhile, Fang Yu finally landed gracefully on the ancient podium. The entire population of the Mercury dwellers fell on him at the same time.

Fang Yu wasn't nervous about the attention. His gaze was fixed instead on the only other person standing on the podium with him.

Although all Shadow Spawns looked alike, this person was an exact replica of Hermes. Fang Yu had a faint illusion that he was looking into a mirror.

"So this is Rhemes?"

Just as he was sizing up the other party, Rhemes was also doing the same. A cold frown slowly crept on his face.

Like Hermes, the elders of his faction had spent the last months imparting a lot of knowledge to him. Personally, Rhemes devised a strategy sure to grant him victory against his twin spawn.

Hermes and him shared a telepathic link, and this tiny detail was a loophole he was planning to exploit ingeniously in battle. For other Shadow Spawns, sharing divine thoughts was a matter of choice; one could dispel a transmission link at any moment. But for spawns that shared a telepathic link like Rhemes and Hermes, it was more complicated. Having perfected an innate divine thought ability, Rhemes was confident he could rely on this telepathic link to completely take advantage of Hermes in battle.

Unfortunately, Hermes was not 'Hermes' right now but Fang Yu, who did not share a bond with him. Rhemes' plan to infiltrate his twin spawn's mind failed before it could even begin.

"Who are you and what have you done to Hermes?" If it was anybody else, they would have assumed that Hermes simply perfected an innate ability to guard his divine thoughts. But Rhemes was different; he was absolutely certain that the 'Hermes' before him was not the real deal.

'Hermes' face was the perfect expression of indignation. With an arrogant expression, he relayed a divine thought around him.

"Brother, you can forget about relying on our psychic link to mess with my mind. I've mastered Divine Thoughts to Great Completion."

If Rhemes' question to him earlier was equivalent to a private chat between the two of them only, Hermes' present action was equivalent to him shouting for everyone present to hear. The Shadow Spawns scanning the battle with their senses instantly grasped what was happening.

"Rhemes' plan was to mess with Hermes' mind to win the battle? What an insidious plan!"

"An insidious method is honourable as long as the desired outcome is favourable. But I'm actually more impressed at the fact that Hermes has mastered Divine Thoughts to Great Completion. Only Elders have grasped innate abilities to that level."

Even Elder Zeno was surprised, "Even though we imparted our insights on Divine Thoughts to him, isn't his comprehension too fast? And Great Completion no less?"

Meanwhile, Rhemes looked livid. He was not unaware of the shift in the spectators' standpoint. Even worse was the fact that he knew he couldn't expose Hermes without sounding like a liar.

With no other choice, he lunged at Hermes. In his mind, he was thinking that regardless of who the imposter was, he just had to defeat him fair and square to clinch victory.

However, Fang Yu was not Hermes.

It would have taken Rhemes only a while to grasp the real Hermes' battle pattern if it was him fighting. But Fang Yu, despite receiving the impartation of knowledge from the elders earlier was not a true Shadow Spawn and did not fight like one. His style was an imitation of the fighting style of those otherworldly Immortals he had watched on Tv back on Earth as he exchanged blows with Rhemes.

This created a unique situation; the innate abilities of the Shadow Spawns, in the hands of Fang Yu as Hermes as he simulated the battle intent of his favourite fictitious heroes, became completely unpredictable. This rhythm completely threw Rhemes off balance and he found himself suffering a loss soon enough.

"I can't go on like this!" Rhemes didn't have time to spare thoughts to the origins of 'Hermes' fantastic combat style. He directly analyzed his situation.

"There is no mistake about it; this imposter is wielding Hermes' body. Could it be that one of the Elders transferred a sliver of their Divine Thoughts into his body to win this battle for their faction?" But such an act left obvious traces. There was no way anyone could do this without being discovered. The Grand Elders present weren't fools after all.

In his moment of distraction, 'Hermes' lunged forward and abruptly vanished. The next moment, Rhemes felt a sense of foreboding and suddenly saw his own shadow stab a dagger towards his throat.

The distance was too close and Rhemes could not react in time. Stunned, he set aside his inhibitions and tugged at the telepathic link he shared with Hermes with all his might. This happened at the same time as the solar flares from the sun completely vanished, shrouding the entirety of Mercury in darkness.

While the dagger in Hermes' hand continued its motion unimpaired, something else was triggered. Fang Yu felt a powerful consciousness stir within him. The original consciousness, Hermes, was awake.

Simultaneously, the body he had been occupying for the past months seemed to finally realize he was an imposter.

In the spectators' view, the shadow dagger pierced into Rhemes' throat, snuffing off his lifeforce. Only a few Elders felt a slight trace of suspicion.

In the brief spell of silence that followed, a solar flare appeared above the planet, enveloping it in a dusky light. The Red Horizon finally arrived, heralding the birth of a new Mercury Sovereign.

As the true Hermes opened his eyes, he saw thousands of Shadow Spawn simultaneously bow to him in worship. Looking down, the body of his twin spawn was in his hands, lifeless.

Several planets away,

the supreme existence, Lord Saturn, suddenly exited his meditation and cast his gaze to the faraway Mercury which was buzzing with activity. His Divine Sense captured what was happening in a split instant.

"After that incident many millennials ago, the peasants finally have a new Sovereign. But what was that fluctuation in spacetime I felt just now?"

As Fang Yu's psyche was being transported by a mystical mechanism infinite eons forward to his present, he had no answer to the Ancient Sovereign's question.

Beside him, Pei Xue was still frozen in place under the effect of the Immobilization Spell he cast earlier and was none the wiser. It was Fang Yu who eventually broke the awkward silence. Speaking from the covers of the shadows, he asked, "Master, why does your Avatar look so pale?" Somehow, the blood Avatar was now the perfect image of a ghost, or what he imagined one would look like at least.'Did something happen in the eighty-eight days I was gone as Hermes?' he wondered to himself.Meanwhile, Gao Weiguang's expression was somewhat dark and he remained silent. Only he knew what had happened in the short span Fang Yu entered the True Self Meditation State, and he wasn't willing to talk about it.Contrary to what Fang Yu's th

Fang Yu listened attentively to Gao Weiguang's lecture and assimilated the information. The description provided about the early stages were easy to follow, but it became more esoteric as it progressed. Fang Yu did not fully grasp the concept of the Dao Arbiter Realm and how it correlated to the cultivation of the spirit embryo which was the inner universe or cosmos. Did the cultivator's cosmos become the Dao Fruit? Or was it simply the evolved World Heart alone which did so? When Fang Yu voiced his questions about this, Gao Weiguang explained that achieving Dao Fruit was different for everyone, and that there wasn't a sole method of transcendence. Besides that, Fang Yu was reminded that he had already integrated with a fragment of a Dao Fruit. As long as he restored the inner cosmos he inherited to perfect condition, the chance to condense a Dao Fruit would automatically appear following the method used by the predecessor the godshard originally belonged to.With this, Gao Weiguang c

Six months flew by seamlessly. In a small cultivation chamber, a figure sat cross-legged in silence. Apart from the faint glint in his eyes from an overhead reflective light, he was almost entirely invisible as he manipulated the shadows around him to conceal his presence and spirit. After a while, Fang Yu finally took a deep breath and exhaled, breaking the state. Simultaneously, the dark cover around him wriggled. "As expected, practicing the Dark Vanguard Body was the optimal choice," Fang Yu mumbled as he dispelled the shadow thicket. The room once again returned to brightness with the overhead lamp providing full illumination. In the past sixty days, Fang Yu had settled down in Qinlingjun City as a temporary resident, following his split with Pei Xue. The latter had seemed unsettled by Fang Yu's divine awakening, and chose to leave the city, parting ways with him. This arrangement was fine by Fang Yu as he was secretly wary of the other party too. Immediately, the latter vanished from view."Damnit, it's an ambush!" Hidden in the darkness, the assassin–Fang Yu–switched location to be safe and concealed his aura. There was no doubt that this was a pre-planned ploy. Somehow, most of the patrons of the tavern were now wielding weapons and exuding their auras to form a killing formation that permeated the entire inn.Under the killing intent, Fang Yu found it several times more difficult to conceal his spirit. It also made it hard to act as his traces would be easily discovered under the tight scrutiny.'Someone in the Assassin Guild must have double-crossed me,' he analyzed, tentatively. Shabby-looking as the warehouse of the Assassin Guild was with its dusty storage shelves and disorganized space, the treasures were still considered quite valuable. Below each treasure, there was a short description of its effect and equivalent credit exchange value.Fang Yu had been to the warehouse several times before and already identified the treasures he found useful for himself. He quickly walked past several shelves and finally stopped in front of a particular section."My dagger is only a low-grade Profound Artifact. I should exchange for another of better quality!" His combat prowess was heavily dependent on his handy dagger as it needed to be able to break through the protective cover of his opponents. It was still somewhat manageable against opponents of lower cultivation, but Fang Yu felt that he would be at a loss if he stuck with using an inferior artifact, especially in the event where he had to assassinate stronger cultivators.Skimming through the weapon rack, Fang Y

"I came back to retrieve my Artifacts," Fang Yu's lips pursued behind the silver mask. "What, I'm not allowed to?" Old Li sensed the laced mockery and smiled wryly, "Not everyone in the Guild agreed with the Branch Leader's verdict on the matter, you know. Now that you've killed her, can we let bygones be bygones?" "Oh, she's the branch leader?" Fang Yu was surprised. He hadn't expected her to be so.....weak? Upon seeing Fang Yu, Old Li was annoyed and had a strong impulse to take a sledgehammer and crack the guy's skull open."I apologize for the trouble I've caused," Fang Yu thankfully knew his place and hurriedly put on a contrite expression. He wasn't wearing a mask this time as Old Li had already seen his features in the mirror earlier."It's fine," Old Li took a deep breath to regain his composure. "What?" Fang Yu frowned immediately. As the sovereign of the planet, it was an understatement to say it was an insult in the first place that Aphrodite's own people were this eager to marry her off. But above that, the manner in which they did this was extremely insulting. In the Venus culture, the dowry came from the bride's side and not the other way around. Clearly, this was an open scheme to drag Aphrodite dignity through the mud.Seeing her mistress' expression turn darker, Mika shifted uneasily and asked, "Shall I prepare your carriage now, Milady?"Fang Yu looked up in surprise, "What do you mean? They didn't even come in person to relay the message?""The message was passed along by a postman," Mika's tone was very soft as she spoke, "They...they said to come meet them yourself in the Sanctum.""Oh?" Fang Yu smiled coldly. "It seems my title as Sovereign is being seen as a joke."Given the power structure of the Venus society, Fang Yu was honestly not surprised at this underh

Fang Yu thought that if indeed such a situation arose one day, he would seek out solutions from the Eternal Purgatory Planet in his timeline to deal with it.His assurance was based on his knowledge of one of the top legacies in the Eternal Purgatory World, a very mysterious Buddhist inheritance from the Clear Heart Temple which cultivated one's mental state to the point of transcending mortal shackles. Their members were all monks and often offered treatment 'spiritual' services to cultivators with extreme mental issues from cases of spiritual encroachment or will possession.Fang Yu supposed it should be a piece of cake for them to deal with a simple personality disorder with their methods. Even better, he could also seek out other inheritances that refined mental purity and cultivate them to eliminate any external influence.Fang Yu left the bath and patted himself dry, rejecting the maidservants who hurriedly came up to do it in his behalf. It was possible that the event was related to the end of this era!Fang Yu had thought about this before. Modern Earth preserved a bit about the ancient era of gods in the form of myths, but the information was limited. There was nothing about how the ancient era ended, including what happened to the divine sovereign gods that ruled the solar system and what led to the recession of spiritual energy in the universe that made the future Earth environment a sparse world with zilch qi. Logically, it was almost impossible to imagine that a stronghold with such power vanished from the annuls of history without so much as clues hinting what led to their downfall. Now that Fang Yu had come across an anomaly in the ancient era, he instinctively felt it was somewhat related to the eventual extinction of the divine gods. This wasn't just an ordinary conjecture but also factored in the intuition of the ancient god he was possessing."Can I do anything to change this fate? Or should I?"This was F

The one beside you is the only exception because it was Sovereign Father's gift to you before he passed away, and even then, you always turn it away from your view!" After speaking, the maidservant realized she had spoken out of turn and hurriedly shut her mouth. This was after Fang Yu dispelled his remote manipulation of her emotional state.'This dao is indeed powerful, able to sense and tweak the emotions of her targets. But what's this business about having an aversion to mirrors?"To avoid coming across memories unsuitable for his viewing, Fang Yu had skipped most of Aphrodite's personal memories earlier. Now, he h

Fortunately, there was no shortage of underwater caves around, so he didn't have to explore for long before he found one remote enough and also relatively comfortable. With all the conditions right, Fang Yu finally entered seclusion, activating the True Self Meditation Art to awaken his psyche within the miniature solar system in his Inner Cosmos. Unlike the previous time, he carefully observed the blazing star in great detail before casting his attention on the planets revolving around it.
