The Man paused and kept staring at us as silence filled the room. It was a very awkward atmosphere and there were lots of emotions and facial expressions pouring out in the room. Jane was just staring at nothing in particular with a face full of confusion. I have to say everything still sounds like a lie to me as if it is all made up by The Man perhaps it is one of their tricks. For one, my father never told me any of those things he said about him and I don't think Mum knows about it too but the expression on The Man's face is very complicated.
He looks as if he doesn't approve of what is happening and is just being forced to do it but even if that's the case, he is not saying anything now so I broke the silence.
"Why did you tell us all those things. We can't do anything or change anything and even if we can, you are holding us captive. So why?"
"I'll tell you why I chose to tell you but you have to listen to me. I didn't say I was finished" he responded and sat upright in his chair having that 'I want to drop a bomb' look.
"I told you..." he said looking at Jane "that you would be useful. Well, they are not just capturing men to use them as meatshields, but girls and women are also captured as well. They use them as..." he paused here and seem to be thinking if he should tell us what he wants to say next. He has a look of pain and anger written across his face. He continued. "They use women as sex slaves"
"What do you mean by sex slave?" Jane asked this time.
"Be calm, I'll explain" he answered. "You see, there are lots of dirty things going on underground that are fully funded by the upper-class men. It is not that the government is not aware of these vicious things but they scrap them due to the economic power of those behind them. Well, one of those things is the sex slave business. It is a kind of business where women and young girls are auctioned off in an underground auction house. This elite class gathers and bids on beautiful women and the highest bidder take the auction item home. Do you understand? He asked and we nodded in response.
"The thing is these women remained slaves to the winner of the auction for life and they can be used to do whatever they want not caring for the feelings of the person and can choose to even kill them if they fail to satisfy their need. People like my boss kidnap these women and sell them to the auction house where they'll be auctioned off. It is people like my boss that also capture men for the military that will be used as meat shields in battle." he paused again and looked at Jane again, this time with a tinge of pity in his eyes.
"I'm saying this because you will likely pass through the same situation. I tried to prevent my boss from finding out that we captured a little girl but someway somehow he found out and he will perhaps sell you to the auction house. I don't want this to happen and that's why I've told you all of this. The auction is still in three months and the auction house won't purchase any item until a few weeks before the auction. It is likely that you won't be set free even if Mase's father agrees to become the transporter and they decide to set Mase free. So we still have at least two months to get you out of this situation. I no longer trust my boys as they seem to be more answerable to my boss than to me now. So it will be hard for you to escape but we will try. The auction house is always heavily guarded so we can't rescue you at the auction house. I will let you know how things are going some other time." he said and it seems like he is not going to say anything again.
All the information I received about my Dad and all that is happening in Silverland, some kind of battle going on somewhere, some men used as meat shields, some kind of transporter, then an anti-meatshield group, and then sex slaves again. It is all just so much stuff to take in. Jane came to my mind again and I looked at her wondering what it would be like not to have Jane by my side. I imagine being maltreated by one old man with a pot belly that can house the sun and moon, being used as a sex slave that can be pounced upon anytime like a lost kid antelope in the jungle.
I imagine that scene I saw on a television program some time ago of a group of hyenas devouring a pitiful antelope and I tried to compare that situation with Jane being amidst those vicious hyenas in one auction room where they are all cackling like a group of hyenas waiting for their share of a fat spoil. I imagined her being kicked and beaten when her frail little hands could no longer perform those innumerable works placed before her. I concluded that no matter what it takes, I'm not going to let Jane end up in such a situation.
"One more thing, I was doing all of those things to you so it could feel real that you are being tortured. I didn't mean to inflict pain on you. I don't do such things to kids. Well, I've been asked to make you both starve. In essence, my boss have instructed me not to give you food again. Guess your father is giving him a hard time. Food will be sneaked in to you for now and make sure you don't tell anyone a thing about our conversation. I don't trust my boys." he said before he started making his way out of the room.
"Please wait!" Jane shouted. She was sobbing now. "Why are you helping us. Are you not working for your boss?" she asked
"I have my reasons for being here and I have goals to achieve and revenge to take. If I stay longer, those boys might get suspicious, I'll tell you all you need to know about me tomorrow because from now on, we are allies". And he left.
After The Man left, Jane and I sat there in silence. Silence is now the new normal for us. Most times when we both have nothing to say, we just sat down and let our minds take over wandering from North to South, seeking answers to bizarre questions. Most times, I look at us and I wonder if Jane and I could ever be so silent and at a loss of things to talk about even though we are seated beside each other, with an entire room all to ourselves. It is needless to say what the cause of this is and as I look at Jane, I know it will be better if we figure things out ourselves. I believe it was night because I was beginning to feel drowsy and would sleep any time now but the door unexpectedly opened again. This time, it was not The Man who stepped in nor the two men who always accompany him. It was a man who in his hands was a tray of food which he dropped before us in suspicious haste and I when I saw his face clearly, he was not the one who usually brings our food but I was too h
I pictured what Geo told us, how Gil, his blood sister was auctioned off before his own eyes while he just stood there, unable to rescue her from the fangs of the predator who purchased her. I imagined the pain he must have passed through at the time, and how much regret he still feels to this day. I don't have a sister, I am the only child of my parents but I have Jane, who has been my best friend for so long, and I pictured how it would feel to see Jane sold off before my eyes while I stand there unable to save her. The thought of it alone is dreadful and right there I felt that I will do whatever it takes to make sure Jane does not end up at the auction house or with any pregnant man. "I later found out..." continued Geo "a few days after the auction that the military, as well as the government, were aware of the auction where humans are sold but refused to interfere because elite members of the society are partaking in the auction. I even received information that t
"I told you all of this because you both remind me of my siblings and I won't forgive myself if I watch you both die," Geo said as he help himself calm down. "I will try my best to get you out of this situation," he said and left the room. I began to see Geo in a different light after that day. I got up that morning. That morning I told you that we probably have used five days in that room. The morning before I told you everything about 'The Man', now Geo. I woke up that morning feeling the most tired and haggard I've ever felt before. I've not taken my bath for perhaps six days now. The room was becoming stuffy of our body odor now. But who cares about a bath or a smelling body when your might end up dying or end up in the hands of one full moon-sized belly man. Geo had told us the previous day that I'll speak with my Dad again today and he advised me to pretend like I'm starving and being tortured so those on the other side won't become suspicious. Geo no lo
Geo came and told us that he has been able to convince them that I shouldn't be released yet. We were both moved to a different room, probably because we were no longer going to be tortured since Dad has accepted to be the transporter. The reason we were put through difficult situations was that they needed to coerce Dad into being the transporter. The room we got moved into was a better one compared to the one we were in before. This one has a slightly large bed not big enough for a set of adults but suitable at least for two kids. The room is not as large as the previous one is as big as our classroom back in school and it does not have chairs scattered all over but is neatly arranged like my room on a Saturday afternoon after Mum finishes arranging it. The room that the room has a bathroom for us to take a bath makes it better. We took turns having our bath as we've not had a bath for weeks now. Geo came after we showered. Geo told us that we are restri
When my legs suddenly left the floor, I thought I've been tricked by Geo into being kidnapped by some other punks. I felt betrayed but I screamed nevertheless for help from the person I felt betrayed by perhaps he can still save my little ass. The torches pointing sharply blocked my eyes from seeing those laughing. I don't if to feel relieved and happy that they are maybe friendly or to be sad and more frightened that they are laughing at my helpless screams. "Welcome to training boy". When I heard this, I felt very relieved and happy that Geo did not betray me but I wanted to curse at them. "Who the hell welcome their student to training in such a manner!. You freaking scared the hell out of me!!!" I shouted when they finally released me from where I was tied allowing me to fall to the floor face first. "These are your teachers Mase," Geo said. Everyone was holding a torch and it gives the hall a little bit of illumination. The two people I saw on the other e
Cara and Nate both took another path in the darkness leading probably to their own home as Geo and I sneak back to the base. We got to the base without much stress as everyone looks to be asleep by now including those that were meant to be on guard. It was not difficult sneaking back into my room with Geo by my side. I quietly entered the bed, afraid of waking Jane who seems to be fast asleep. "How was it," Jane whispered. I thought my ears were playing tricks because I felt she should be asleep by now. "How was it, Mase," she asked again. "It was okay" I answered in a similar tone just before I drifted into sleep. It was midday by the time I woke up, the sun shining brightly up in the sky and its light filled our room. I saw a plate of food by my side and I didn't waste time to get washed up and eat the food. "How are you," I asked Jane who was sitting at the other end of the bed. "I'm fine" she said. "What happened at the training yesterday? Were you m
I woke past noon the qfollowing day as usual. Time flew by and it was night again. Geo and I sneaked out of the base, passing through the back gate. I followed Geo, walking through thick bushes, different from the clear path that leads to the training hall. If it was a few days ago, I might not have been able to comfortably navigate my way through the dark path but the training I received from Cara has taught me to lighten my steps and make less to no sound while walking. It was a full moon night so the moon helped illuminate everywhere making it easier for us to regulate our footsteps. After walking for about thirty minutes or so, Geo pointed at a cave a few meters away and said that we stop there. The moon enabled me to see a little past the entrance of the cave but the farther I look, the darker it gets, so I stopped and asked Geo what the cave is. "What is this place?"I asked. "It's just a cave that I discovered by chance" he answered but I could
When Dad said the reason he didn't join the military was because he found out that they auction humans, I was happy that my father is a good person. It is natural for us to hope that our loved ones be good people. I wonder how differently I would feel if Dad said he supports the military and their actions. I left that for now. "Though I knew you were the one they captured, I didn't attempt to rescue you. I'm really sorry brother" Geo said. "It's not your fault and there's nothing you could have done. You can't fight those people all by yourself after all. Let's discuss the plan so I can return quickly, I won't like Jessy to know I'll be involved in this" Dad said. Jessy is my mom's name, Dad doesn't call her by her name so often except he's with someone very close to him. "I'll cut to the chase," Geo said. "Remember I told you that the auction only buys people a week before the actual auction, and it can be less, maybe a few days to the auction day or as the case may
