Time passed quickly and we didn't even know when it is day or night so I lost count of the days. Considering my assumption, we should have spent close to five days in this room doing nothing.
Jane had kept crying out of fear of everything that is going on but she soon put everything at the back of her mind. I advised her to do so because crying won't take us out of that horrendous room. The Man kept coming at intervals to check on us, maybe not as he will just come, issue his threats to us that we should never let it cross our minds that we have a chance of escaping or give him or his 'boys' any 'matter'.
There's been a lot of changes in things and I've made some discoveries over the past five days. Incredible ones. I will start with The Man. Something about The Man is very amusing to me. You see The Man talks in some kind of slang which I probably didn't notice the first day due to the trauma that comes from being in abduction. The man once said to one of his subordinates; 'O-boy, go down'. I'm just as confounded as you are when I heard him say that but I later discovered one way or the other that he was only telling that subordinate of his to come. Crazy right?. Yes. That's how I've been hearing my captor say one incomprehensible phrase after another. Do you know what it means to decome? I shouldn't be explaining every little thing to you, you know that. Well, if come means that you should come, then what do you think decome would mean. That's it.
I've spoken with Dad like twice after the initial call. The calls this time are full of threats and they seem to be using my life to coerce Dad into becoming their transporter...of humans. The Man would let his men use some equipment to inflict pain on me and force me to scream so my Dad would hear over the phone and perhaps get compelled by it. Well, I'm still here so obviously, he is still adamant about working for The Man's boss.
I don't know why but things began to change when The Man entered our room one day and started saying things I consider ludicrous. He came in the normal way with his subordinates following closely behind him. He bid them leave the room when he sat down and I wonder why because they always stay in the room with him even when I spoke to Dad over the phone.
"I can see you don't fully understand the situation you and your father are in right now. I'll do well by explaining things to you. You are still young but it'll be good if you put your little ears down, listen to me, and never lose concentration. Your little damn life is on the line so I don't need to tell you what to do" The Man said as he sat down. I didn't reply as I see he still has a lot to say.
"I will start by explaining the state of everything to you; the cause of this whole mess and why your father is needed in the first place. You folks in Old Town might not know what is going on in the upper-class cities like Greg, Crute and the likes. I doubt you ever heard of those places"
"Well it doesn't matter, I might die nonetheless. Just continue" I said coldly. He was trying to throw a jig at me so I saved face. Mase never loses face. He gave me a very cold stare that tells me not to interrupt him again and continued.
"The upper-class cities are located at the borders of Silverland and have been susceptible to attacks from invaders. The attacks have been coming more frequently this time. The army has not been making progress in its fight to defeat the intruders and large numbers of the Silverland soldiers fall each day. The problem now is that Silverland still has soldiers that can fight off Asheville but only if there are meat shields. Do you know what I mean by meat shield?" The Man asked us. Jane and I shook our heads.
"When people who have no battle experience or little or no military training are put in front of a battle as just an increase in number to shield the soldiers and allow them more time to deal with the enemy. They will most likely be killed in the battle so they are meat shields. That's how the topic of transporter comes into the picture. I shouldn't be telling you all of this as it is not ideal that's why I sent my boys out, so you must not reveal everything I've told you and that which I'm going to tell you to anyone. Do you understand?" We nodded again and he looked at us as if to make sure we are not lying and we gave him that 'we are with you' look. So he continued.
"You see, those meatshields are men kidnapped just the way we kidnapped your Dad and the way you kidnapped you guys. We move them to a discreet location, away from prying eyes. They are given minimal military training and then sent off to the battlefield. It is the transporter who does the work of moving these people to the battlefield. You would wonder why they are adamant that your father be the transporter. Well, transporters face a lot of problems on their way to their destination and that's why they always select two to three soldiers to follow them but the important thing is that the transporter has to be someone very skilled at combat and has knowledge of weapons."
"Do you know why these transporters are waylaid even if they are working for the government? It's because of a group that has gained knowledge of what the government does with people so they formed a group to stop the action of the government. The thing is these people are also in the military or once in the military so they are skilled in combat and possess dangerous weapons. This group killed the last transporter and rescued the meat shields. That is why your father is being rushed and threatened with everything he has including your mother because they need a new transporter and urgently at that" he saw the expression on my face change but didn't stop. "Now let me tell you why your father has been chosen to be the transporter. I don't know if you are aware that kids learn some level of martial arts and combat skills when they get to high school. Those who excel in these combats and martial arts lessons are put in a military school to further enhance their skill and thereafter choose to either become a soldier or just go out and do their thing". He paused here then continued.
"Well, your father was the best in martial arts and combats and was the first and remains the only person from Old Town to win the all-school combat competition at the high school and military school level. So you know why your father has been chosen to be the transporter because there are only a few around that can defeat him in combat. So that's why they are adamant about making your father the transporter. You know the problem here boy? Your father is not someone who will agree to become a transporter knowing fully well what it entails but if he does accept, there's the probability that he'll be killed perhaps after everything has settled down and if he doesn't the consequences will be graver than he could imagine because you his son will be tortured and killed, then he will be sent to the battlefield to die as well and I guess the same fate awaits your mother as well."
The Man paused and kept staring at us as silence filled the room. It was a very awkward atmosphere and there were lots of emotions and facial expressions pouring out in the room. Jane was just staring at nothing in particular with a face full of confusion. I have to say everything still sounds like a lie to me as if it is all made up by The Man perhaps it is one of their tricks. For one, my father never told me any of those things he said about him and I don't think Mum knows about it too but the expression on The Man's face is very complicated. He looks as if he doesn't approve of what is happening and is just being forced to do it but even if that's the case, he is not saying anything now so I broke the silence. "Why did you tell us all those things. We can't do anything or change anything and even if we can, you are holding us captive. So why?" "I'll tell you why I chose to tell you but you have to listen to me. I didn't say I was finished" h
After The Man left, Jane and I sat there in silence. Silence is now the new normal for us. Most times when we both have nothing to say, we just sat down and let our minds take over wandering from North to South, seeking answers to bizarre questions. Most times, I look at us and I wonder if Jane and I could ever be so silent and at a loss of things to talk about even though we are seated beside each other, with an entire room all to ourselves. It is needless to say what the cause of this is and as I look at Jane, I know it will be better if we figure things out ourselves. I believe it was night because I was beginning to feel drowsy and would sleep any time now but the door unexpectedly opened again. This time, it was not The Man who stepped in nor the two men who always accompany him. It was a man who in his hands was a tray of food which he dropped before us in suspicious haste and I when I saw his face clearly, he was not the one who usually brings our food but I was too h
I pictured what Geo told us, how Gil, his blood sister was auctioned off before his own eyes while he just stood there, unable to rescue her from the fangs of the predator who purchased her. I imagined the pain he must have passed through at the time, and how much regret he still feels to this day. I don't have a sister, I am the only child of my parents but I have Jane, who has been my best friend for so long, and I pictured how it would feel to see Jane sold off before my eyes while I stand there unable to save her. The thought of it alone is dreadful and right there I felt that I will do whatever it takes to make sure Jane does not end up at the auction house or with any pregnant man. "I later found out..." continued Geo "a few days after the auction that the military, as well as the government, were aware of the auction where humans are sold but refused to interfere because elite members of the society are partaking in the auction. I even received information that t
"I told you all of this because you both remind me of my siblings and I won't forgive myself if I watch you both die," Geo said as he help himself calm down. "I will try my best to get you out of this situation," he said and left the room. I began to see Geo in a different light after that day. I got up that morning. That morning I told you that we probably have used five days in that room. The morning before I told you everything about 'The Man', now Geo. I woke up that morning feeling the most tired and haggard I've ever felt before. I've not taken my bath for perhaps six days now. The room was becoming stuffy of our body odor now. But who cares about a bath or a smelling body when your might end up dying or end up in the hands of one full moon-sized belly man. Geo had told us the previous day that I'll speak with my Dad again today and he advised me to pretend like I'm starving and being tortured so those on the other side won't become suspicious. Geo no lo
Geo came and told us that he has been able to convince them that I shouldn't be released yet. We were both moved to a different room, probably because we were no longer going to be tortured since Dad has accepted to be the transporter. The reason we were put through difficult situations was that they needed to coerce Dad into being the transporter. The room we got moved into was a better one compared to the one we were in before. This one has a slightly large bed not big enough for a set of adults but suitable at least for two kids. The room is not as large as the previous one is as big as our classroom back in school and it does not have chairs scattered all over but is neatly arranged like my room on a Saturday afternoon after Mum finishes arranging it. The room that the room has a bathroom for us to take a bath makes it better. We took turns having our bath as we've not had a bath for weeks now. Geo came after we showered. Geo told us that we are restri
When my legs suddenly left the floor, I thought I've been tricked by Geo into being kidnapped by some other punks. I felt betrayed but I screamed nevertheless for help from the person I felt betrayed by perhaps he can still save my little ass. The torches pointing sharply blocked my eyes from seeing those laughing. I don't if to feel relieved and happy that they are maybe friendly or to be sad and more frightened that they are laughing at my helpless screams. "Welcome to training boy". When I heard this, I felt very relieved and happy that Geo did not betray me but I wanted to curse at them. "Who the hell welcome their student to training in such a manner!. You freaking scared the hell out of me!!!" I shouted when they finally released me from where I was tied allowing me to fall to the floor face first. "These are your teachers Mase," Geo said. Everyone was holding a torch and it gives the hall a little bit of illumination. The two people I saw on the other e
Cara and Nate both took another path in the darkness leading probably to their own home as Geo and I sneak back to the base. We got to the base without much stress as everyone looks to be asleep by now including those that were meant to be on guard. It was not difficult sneaking back into my room with Geo by my side. I quietly entered the bed, afraid of waking Jane who seems to be fast asleep. "How was it," Jane whispered. I thought my ears were playing tricks because I felt she should be asleep by now. "How was it, Mase," she asked again. "It was okay" I answered in a similar tone just before I drifted into sleep. It was midday by the time I woke up, the sun shining brightly up in the sky and its light filled our room. I saw a plate of food by my side and I didn't waste time to get washed up and eat the food. "How are you," I asked Jane who was sitting at the other end of the bed. "I'm fine" she said. "What happened at the training yesterday? Were you m
I woke past noon the qfollowing day as usual. Time flew by and it was night again. Geo and I sneaked out of the base, passing through the back gate. I followed Geo, walking through thick bushes, different from the clear path that leads to the training hall. If it was a few days ago, I might not have been able to comfortably navigate my way through the dark path but the training I received from Cara has taught me to lighten my steps and make less to no sound while walking. It was a full moon night so the moon helped illuminate everywhere making it easier for us to regulate our footsteps. After walking for about thirty minutes or so, Geo pointed at a cave a few meters away and said that we stop there. The moon enabled me to see a little past the entrance of the cave but the farther I look, the darker it gets, so I stopped and asked Geo what the cave is. "What is this place?"I asked. "It's just a cave that I discovered by chance" he answered but I could
